I am just confused on the issue. according to cannon(however ridiculus it is sometimes) wands are snapped when someone is expelled. yet you can get another wand, some characters actually use second hand wands. I mean if you only get one wand that would pretty much suck, like what happens if you are asleep one day and your dog chews your wand to little bits, your screwed.

There are places to buy more wands than just ovillander, secondhand shops, and the street pedler that was mentioned once come to mind.

it all just seems contradictory unless there is another law that states you can not own another wand if its snapped by the ministry. Thats a whole other matter about why the govrernment is involved with the expulsion or a kid from school, and why you get your wand snapped if your expelled.

I just wonder why all the fuss about snapping your wand if you can just go get another.

A person might be able to get another wand, but would it work as well? That seems to be part of the issue - another wand might not get results as good as the one that "chose" a wizard or witch originally.

In that thing you call a closet. Better watch out,
If a ministry official snapped your wand, then you obviously have abused your "power" as a wizard and deserve it snapped.

And as for getting a new one after getting snapped you either end up in Azkaban and IF freed then you'll prob be monitored.

And if you leave Hogwarts you cant go to another school and you cant get a new wand becasue you're education is only half-assed.

Plus your new wand's results might suck or you wont even get chosen. I know Neville got one as did Ron but their original wands wasnt theres so...um yea.

When Hagrid was expelled in 2nd or 3rd year (not sure), his wand was snapped. But when Weasley twins left the school in their 7th year, they were allowed to keep performing magic (in OOTP)?

It is deffinitely NOT a matter of being of age or not, since Hagrid is NOT ALLOWED to do magic at all, even though he is like 60+.

The only reasonable solution I can think of is that you must have your OWLS passed to be ALLOWED to do magic at all - why else would they be so important?

But, what I find very confusing is that, Ron is using Charlie's OLD wand in Book 2.

Why the hell would Charlie throw away his old wand, if it's supposed to bond with wizard for life? And why couldn't Molly afford Ron a new wand, which is 7 galleons, when Ron spends 10 galleons at a Victor Krum action figure in GOF? Same goes for Neville and his father's wand?

Maybe the whole thing with bonding wands doesn't matter much, or runs in the family?

Dunno, but there are whole lot more issues with wands in HP canon - Lupin wandlessly conjuring a ball of light in POA, Harry activating his wand from few meters away in OOTP, Dark Lord salvaging his wand after killing the Potters, etc... Lot of poorly explained tidbits.

Hagrid kept his pieces and put them in his umbrella thanks to Dumbledore.

And I think Charlies wand was going to crap so he got a new one.. makes no sense but thats my best explanation.

Well Rons practically a squib so they had to wait for his magic do do stuff so no wand bondend to him but in third year he hadd a little magic to bond.

Neville's Gran I think wanted to use it with Neville to make him like her son in a weird twisted way.

Lupin has werewolf power and well it is a minor spell the lumos is so its easier.

Harry activating the wand... u did the same in ur story( by the way love ur story) and he prob just prayed and focused his magic.

and Pettigrew was holding the wand (I think) thats all I have

To IP: I think that it's because the twins were of age when they quit Hogwarts. They weren't expelled either. Hagrid, on the other hand, was only thirteen, and was expelled. This whole Ministry regulating magic thing gets on my nerves though, what right do they have to control something that's supposed to be innate? Maintain order yes, control things like magic, no.

Remember the Ministry is run by people as inept as Fudge who is the leader.

Besides Imagine wat would happen if they let people run wild. Im not saying they should control it to the extent they do but to a certain point so muggles dont find out.

Ah, well it's all Rowling's fault again really. The idea that getting expelled from Hogwarts is enough to make it illegal for you to ever practise magic again is absurd. You're going to take away the most important thing in someone's life (that the government really should have no control over unless you're using it to hurt somone else) because they were caught out of bed after curfew one to many times? Because they snuck a broom inot school as a first year? Because they pranked a teacher?

It's completely insane, yet it appears to be the law. As far as I know Hagrid was never actually convicted of anything when Myrtle died - he was thrown out and it was hushed up.
Here's an inconsistency for you: Filch is a squib - couldn't possibly have gone to Hogwarts (or any magical school), or have any practical OWL's - yet he takes what appears to be a perfectly legal 'kwikspell' course. He certainly isn't a qualified wizard, but you don't see the DMLE swooping down to make sure he doesn't attempt any magic. Does he have a wand? You have to assume so; he certainly isn't going to be trying magic wandlessly.

Who snaps the wand? Is it the Ministry or is one of the Hogwarts faculty? If it's the latter, well, I've already outlined how absurd that is. If it's the Ministry, what do you have to do (other than getting expelled for answering back to Snape one too many times) for them to do it? Did they snap the wands of Death Eaters they caught? Probably, though it didn't seem to stop them from getting new ones. Do they snap the wands of petty criminals? If they snap the wands of naughty children (which they must do, since Hagrid was never officially convicted, just expelled) then surely anyone who gets convicted of anything gets their wand snapped. Is Aberforth Dumbledore then a squib (in practice, since he would have no wand)? Is Dung? He must have been convicted of something at some point, he's a known crook, yet apparently he is able to 'guard' Harry.

Obviously these things are stupid, and that's my point. Rowling is a complete fuck up as a writer.

Here's a conundrum for you: When did Voldemort get his wand back?
What do we know? He dies, apparently, in a magical explosion that reduces the Potters' house to ruins (not that the scene is usually portrayed that way in fanfiction, but in canon we are told the house is destroyed - raising the question of why baby Harry wasn't crushed to death by the roof collapsing on him afterwards, but I digress...). Is his body destroyed? We don't know, but it's a big explosion. His wand definitely IS NOT destroyed, because, of course, we know from the priori incanatem scene in GoF that it is necessarily the same wand that Ollivander sold him (though not necessarily his first wand, not that that is significant, I don't think). However, we also know that he fled the scene as a spirit, and thus would not have been able to take his wand with him.

Where then did it go? It surely would have made a fine prize for the Ministry, something to display on the wall of the Minister's office, no doubt. We never hear about it being stolen, so we have to assume that it's never recovered. Was there a Death Eater accompanying him who picked it up afterwards? Since he didn't call his minions to him until after he got a body the only possibility is Pettigrew. Why would he take it though? He certainly wasn't a believer in the cause - and there's never even any indication that he was present when the Potters were killed or that he had the wand afterwards. I can't imagine he would WANT to support Voldemort when he no longer had to. In fact, that raises even more questions - at the end of PoA, he 'sets out to rejoin his master'. What POSSIBLE reason could he have for doing that? If Voldemort had found HIM and made him help, that would be believable, but surely Pettigrew would just want to run and hide from Black and Lupin again - he certainly doesn't benefit from Voldemort being restored: losing his hand, regular crucio'ing, insults, menial tasks, more guilt - logically he would just have run and hid again - it certainly worked the first time around.

Ugh, I went off on a huge tangent again. Anyway, in conclusion, Rowling sucks.

Wow... didn't realise some people hold so much rage against Rowling... I don't hate her, and I still enjoy reading Harry Potter - I just think she's a shit writer. That may seem like a contradiction but I watch and enjoy crap movies and TV, read crappy fanfics if they have elements that appeal to me (can't say I didn't enjoy a fair bit of stained-future's writing), so reading crappy books? Sure.

As much as this is amusing, i was just pointing out that there are quite a few inconsistancies in her writing and was wondering what people's thoughts were on this particular one.

I do like Rowlings ideas, if not her actual writing, she did create this world that is so huge and so underdeveloped that we can play with it as we want. I am probably a part of the huge minority that liked :hbp on this site (except for the h/g and other crappy romantic sub-plots.)

I Liked HBP Too but don't tell anyone

I think that wands might become less compatable as a wizard gets older, hence wands getting passed down. The issue with buying wands I think that if you get your wand snapped by the ministry you go on a blacklist of sorts which means it's illegal for you to have a wand. Does it actually say anywhere in canon about multiple wands being illegal?

We know for a fact Voldemort NEVER got a new wand it, as Ollivander said the brother wand of Harry's the one he sold to Tom Riddle.

So he could'nt have had one because the graveyard would'nt have worked.

Either a Death Eater took it, (which I doubt because they have no motivation)
or JKR majorly screwed up.....im going to the latter

Wrong. He said that it was He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named's wand, he never gave any indication that he knew that Tom Riddle was in fact Voldemort. It is highly likely that Voldemort got the wand when he was known as Voldemort but not yet public enemy number one.

True you make a excellent point, but then what happened when Tom Riddle not yet Voldemort got his first wand how did he get it from Ollivander.

And if Ollivander remembers every wand wouldnt he tell that Voldemort is Tom Riddle and already have a wand.

Unless people tend to get a new wand when they get older like what has been discussed somewhat already in this thread. And Ollivander knows every wand he ever sold, doesn't mean he knows every person he sold it to or a person who has altered himself to the point that Voldemort did.

i think your wrong. this is Ollivanders we're talking about. JKR made him to look like a compleate weardo even in the wizarding standards. who knows what the guy is capable of.
