Alright, this is either a post-HBP or post-OotP. Basically, Harry defeats Voldemort at some point in time, he's powerful, but he's still young (somewhere from 15-21 years old) so he hasn't yet reached the level of Voldemort or Dumbledore. He defeated Voldemort by luck/help/specialization in one single form of magic, etc. Whatever way you want to do it. After defeating Voldemort however, he realizes he made a mistake. The huge prejudice of the magical world, and the fear that another like Voldemort will rise up has all but destroyed the entire society. Biggoted purebloods control the government, there is constant battles between purebloods and muggle borns, etc. Without an extremely powerful figurehead on either side, the entire society is slowly destroying itself.

So, Harry realizes he can't wait the needed years to gain the experience/magical power/knowledge, whatever, that he needs to stabalize society. Instead, he decides to go back in time.... to help Voldemort. Harry can be Light/Dark/or Grey. For example, he can try and convince Voldemort that destroying muggles and muggle borns would be useless, and instead to simply take over the ministry without sensless killings. He can string Voldemort along, untill he takes over then, then try to kill him, etc. However the main conflict should be both Harry and Tom slowly working to take over the ministry.

-Dumbledore has to be dead in the present, and must be alive when Harry goes back into the past.

-Dumbledore's Order of the Phoenix must be Harry and Tom's enemy in the past

-Tom can be completely insane, he can have good intentions and simply be misguided (Think Revan when he is a Dark Lord in KOTOR), or he can be a good guy who simply snapped one day, from dark magic, abuse, for whatever reason.

-Harry must be powerful, but not as powerful as Voldemort at his peak or Dumbledore, he should be more powerful, or even with Tom when he goes back.

-Grindelwald can be alive or dead in this fic, your choice.

    That's basically it.

Sounds interesting, but it would be difficult to write.

Wouldn't it make even more sense if Harry helped BOTH Dumbledore and Voldemort? You know, fortify each side, so that they polarize the society and then bully some sort of peace treaty between them?

Another way this can work is if Harry returns just as Voldemort leaves Hogwarts and install himself for his mentor.

But yeah, tis a good idea.
