    I'd think it fairly obvious. DLP is the most active site in the Harry Potter fandom. It being attacked is therefore big news in the fandom. Reddit is a site for sharing, among other things, important events, and I figured the hpfanfiction subreddit would find it interesting.

    If you found this difficult to follow and require a more basic explanation, I recommend asking r/explainlikeimfive.

    Well, considering that they're spam bots, would it really be that hard to make them post 10 times before they create social group threads?

    Yeah, that. As a lot of users tend to browse "New Posts" spambots will be detected quite soon.

    In this case their advantage was that no one is browsing or watching the social groups list.
