    Death Note Goes American
    Manga series acquired for new live-action films.
    by Scott Collura

    May 1, 2009 - Warner Bros. has acquired the live-action rights to the popular manga series Death Note, with screenwriters Charley and Vlas Parlapanides (War of the Gods) hired to adapt the tale for the big screen.

    Variety reports that the story "centers on a college student who accidentally finds a misplaced 'death note,' infusing him with the power to kill merely by writing anyone's name on the page while picturing the person in his mind." The film will be based on the first three volumes of the 13-part manga, which was written by Tsugumi Ohba and illustrated by Takeshi Obata.

    Warner Bros. Pictures Japan previously made three Japanese-language Death Note films, directed by Shusuke Kaneko. Those films will not tie in to the new movie, beyond their shared source material.

    I really don't care since I hate Death Note, but would Hollywood please stop doing this. No one will watch these and they will receive horrible reviews, so why do you insist?

    I'm actually looking forward to this adaption. It looks like it will follow the manga more closely than the japanese movies. As long as these writers respect the source material it should be fine.

    >_> This is probably going to be even worse than the jap. movie. Esp. if they only plan on using the first 3 books.

    Hmm, never really liked the anime but I enjoyed 2 of the Jap. live action movies decently enough.

    Can't think of any American remakes, of anything, turning out to be worth the time watching though. Bad luck for the fans, I guess.

    You would rather they cram all 12 books into one movie?

    No but then the bastards will drag it into 3 movies which quite frankly is ridiculous. I love DN but there was a shitload of boring after volume 7. And seeing if the movie does any good Hollywood will try to milk it to death resulting in the movies (if they are actually decent) sucking hard.

    Raping anime and manga into live-action is one of the worst things that can be done to it. The japanese one sucked, this will suck even more.

    Are they really expecting to do a sequel? Don't tell me these live-action thingys are actually popular.

    I agree, after volume 7 it did go downhill. But Light kept it interesting for me.

    The studio (WB) is only using the first three books of the series for this movie because they hope to make it into a franchise like Harry Potter, which will be done soon.

    Well . . . let's look at it this way; at least 20th Century Fox isn't the company producing it.

    I'll probably go see it. How could I not? Despite how bad the Dragonball movie was I still watched it ; _ ;
