Really good chapter, glad the author didn't go the 'Harry discovers powerful magics from other cultures' route at the World Cup. Myst did a good job throughout the chapter, and the changes to the tournament are pretty unique. Really looking forward to it. Ron as president left me grinning the entire time too - lol - epitemy of 'careful what you wish for'

    This fic is a gem.

A good chapter, but the author needs to get a handle on their parentheses. We had a double parenthesis in there at one point. I was worried that order of operations was going to become a plot point.

The author's had trouble with parentheses and grammar before; if I remember correctly the first chapter had some serious problems with capitalization (of a proper name! A PROPER NAME!).

I believe a page or so ago I said that I was worried that the story, while interesting, was going to go nowhere without the central conflict picking back up again. With the Death Eaters attacking the World Cup and Ron's (understandably) visceral reaction to the Malfoy family in the Minister's box, I think this chapter definitely assuaged my fears for now.

I'm going back to see if I missed something, but has it been a plot point that the Weasleys didn't invite Harry to the World Cup? I wouldn't be surprised (If I remember correctly it's been something of an undercurrent in the series that the Weasley parents have taken Harry "killing" Ginny poorly) but I don't remember if it was ever explicitly said. Which just means I get to read this again.

It is, yes. The name is distinctive enough that I'm somewhat surprised that she mis-remembered it, given how well she seems to know canon otherwise.

I have never heard someone say Brill before. I really like what she's doing with Arthur(one of the few characters that even fanon seems to dismiss), kind of makes me think that's what Ron will end up being like.

Oh and its also kind of nice that Harry and Ron have basically accepted that the Weasley's don't like Harry anymore and there is no angsting over that fact.

I wonder how she's going to get Harry to try-out for the Tournament this time, since he doesn't seem to be interested in it for now.

I wonder how Durmstrang will be portrayed (I assume that Harry will end in the Tournament).

Interesting chapter, great Arthur and Dobby.

    But Hungry? Seriously?

You people assume far too much. Clearly with all the changes, things will be different. I don't even remember, but isn't Pettigrew still with Ron? Wouldn't that mean he never went to Voldemort?

If you recall, Bertha was batty in the first place because Crouch Sr. placed a memory charm on her which went wrong.

In canon, when Voldemort removed the memory charm he did it violently, breaking her mind completely.

It seems like here he's removed the charm properly, returning her to her pre-memory charm state. Maybe she's under the imperius, or maybe she's gone over to Voldemort -- she does have cause to want to get revenge on Crouch, after all.

It could be Crouch Jr. under Polyjuice as well.

The only "canon" way to remove memory charm is torture.

I assumed Voldemort possessed her, a broken mind is an easy one to control I'd wager.

I believe the relevant passage goes:

My own reading of that passage is not that torture was necessarily involved or required in the reversal of the Memory Charm, but that physical and mental torture may have been used in extracting "all the useful information" from her.

But considering that Hermione had used a similar (though supposedly different) spell to modify the memories of her parents I find it unlikely that torture would be the only way to reverse such charms. Not to mention the extenuating circumstances surrounding Bertha's bewitching (or even Lockhart's) makes me question that assertion — presumably the memory charm is not supposed to leave the victim's personality so radically changed by the event.

Seems to imply that there are various methods.
