Also, how in the hell did Michael kill it?

If Dragons are all they are cracked up to be, then they are beyond even the mothers summer and winter.

We havent seen anything at all comparable to them in terms of power. Maybe the united Winter Court? Or the Curse that wiped out the Red Vampires,

If thats the case, they Michael is literally an unstoppable badarse, who did something maybe never seen before in History. He should be world famous (In the supernatural) and feared by literally everyone.

I remember a WOG that said the one he killed was the weakest, but thats still power beyond compare.

And what becasue of his Mantle (If he had one) since all the dragons seem to hold an important roll, someone needs to pick up the slack.

Maybe it was his death that first allowed nemesis through?

He was very very slowly getting corrupted from eons of holding it back, Michael kills it and suddenly 20 years latter we have two summer/winter ladies, multiple high rank Faires including several top dogs in winter.

Michael saved Charety and Doomed the world.

Michael has this magic sword, you might not have heard of it. There's this supernatural heavy hitter sitting on his shoulder too. Can't remember the name, starts with 'G'.

As for what corrupted the Dragon in the first place...I dunno. Maybe some manner of character/force that has been shown to corrupt otherwise top tier beings from other groups.

Dragon got cocky and essentially told Michael to swing first. God took it from there.

That's kinda my point mate. If a sword lets you trump a dragon.... The Knights become supernatural nukes that nothing can stop.

It's just simply to far above what should be possible.

Except that a Knight's power has severe restrictions placed upon it. It's not like you can use a Sword to become 'god'. And they are easy enough to kill in the right circumstances, see Small Favor for example.

I think this is actually why it works for me, combined with this...

The swords can trump pretty much anything... but only in very specific circumstances. Right time, right place, right person, right motivation, etc. It's what allows Knights to play in the Big Leagues. And yes, they do need to be able to play there. It's just that 99 times out of 100 they aren't invited.

Yeah I kinda get that. But to knock out one of supposedly 3 guardians of the primal forces of the universe? That should be shit on the same scale as knocking out the red court.

So yeah, maybe, maybe a knight can do it, but then they should be able to curb stomp literally every other thing in existence when needed, including Nicodmeous. Not have him keep killing for 2000 years. The excuse that they can only pla in the 1% for special cases falls down when that fucker has killed thousands or maybe millions.

Also like the fall of the red court, you think there would be world changing consequences for taking down a dragon. Michael should be a rockstar of the supernaural world.

It was enough that Ferrovax knew him on sight and that every major faction addresses him as "Sir Knight". I'd say he's fairly well known.

The Fallen are sort of the exception to the rule though, because by definition Michael can't just go full throttle at Nicodemus like he could at Ferrovax. Because Nicodemus is a mortal man with a passenger. He could repent and ask forgiveness. He is one of the people that Michael is trying to save, and Michael's powers are to a point dependent upon his belief in that.

Nicodemus, or any fallen for that matter, are not a valid comparison. By design the Knights play by different rules when it comes to them, and Nicodemus in particular is good at playing to the human aspects of the Knights to get them to doubt themselves. Which in turn affects their abilities.

Admittedly not completely sure, but I seem to recall a WoG that stated that the Dragons were no longer guardians like that, and were bitter about their loss in station? Might be wrong though (anyone recall). If so, that would indicate that they would probably have lost a big chunk of their power.

Regardless, there is one potential justification for how Michael was able to take down a Dragon, but not easily take down all other major monsters. When Harry and Nicodemus have their fight at the end of Small Favor (when Harry is strangling Nicodemus), the shadow of Nicodemus is repelled by the sword Harry has with him. And what Harry thinks is interesting considering he is presumably pretty familiar with both the swords and the denarians at that point:

That might suggest that the sword always makes it a fair fight, but no more. Michael with a sword against Dragon? He has a fair chance of winning because the sword boosts him massively to match the Dragon.

Michael with a sword against a vampire? He has an equally fair chance of winning, because the sword gives him a reasonable boost.

Michael with a sword against a random average ghoul? He has a fair chance of winning, but the sword basically does nothing except glow a little.

Well its probably not quite that simple, but the point is that the powerboost the swords give obviously depends utterly on the enemy the wielder is facing. Or it might even be the other way around. The sword might have dampened the power Siriothraxus had (just as it suppressed Nicodemus's shadow), so that for Michael, Siriothraxus was not a Dragon in the asian sense, but just a big scaled lizard.

We actually see this same thing happen in Changes also. The Red King is basically mindwhammying everyone there so they can't really even move, and the sword Murphy wields basically makes the Red Kings power disappear instantly and easily.

But the point is, the power of the swords seems to shift based on situation and enemy. They probably reach the level of a supernatural nuke on very rare occasions.

Siriothrax was a big D Dragon. Ferrovax wouldn't have cared that Michael killed him otherwise. Also, the Swords don't bring their wielders up to anything's level; they bring the thing down to his. Any other abilities Michael displays are more an effect of his faith than they are of the Sword, though I wouldn't discount the idea that the Sword could potentially act as a force multiplier there.

Hello all, first post on the site after finding my way here by searching for new info/thoughts on PT. Chapter 1 left a lot to be desired, which I like to imagine and after reading through this thread it seems people agree, was the point since it is just the opening chapter.

The main plot/thrust of the book seems to have been laid out, talks regarding the Unseelie Accords in Chicago, and it should make for an exciting book. I too was a little disappointed about the reintroduction of Carlos but think that may have just been because of the briefness of his appearance. I enjoyed him in White Night quite a bit and he has been alluded to or briefly appeared in a few books since but we haven't gotten much of him. I was left confused as to whether or not I had forgotten how he suffered his injuries but it looks like I'm not the only one. Based on the premise though it looks like we'll be spending a lot of time with him in this installment which is something I'm looking forward to as there should be some juicy conversations between Carlos and Harry.

Justine being pregnant also makes sense to me. Butcher has said elsewhere that he believes in choices and actions having sensible consequences in his stories. He said that in response to the idea that if Harry and Susan were going to have sex that it could very well, as it did, result in her getting pregnant and leading to Maggie. If this line of thinking is consistently followed, and White Court vampires are not entirely infertile, it makes sense that Thomas could impregnate Justine over the course of the series based on the amount of times one would imagine they have had sex during this timeline. As with all of his work, I'll be curious to see where Butcher takes things.

The idea that excites me the most about the coming plot is the possibility for the return of supporting characters from the past and also the potential for introduction to new memorable characters. I don't believe it will be an explosion of past fan favorites, there is only so much space to go around to do people justice but, as others have mentioned, Ivy/Lara Raith/McCoy/Sarissa and Fix/Luccio are all distinct possibilities in addition to Molly potentially having a large role depending on what Mab decides to do.

I'm looking forward to ultimately seeing Butcher's finished work but in the meantime will continue to enjoy reading the speculation/ideas of others and offering my own thoughts as well.

I haven't gotten to read the first chapter. However, after listening to the Podcast discussing it, and reading the thoughts shared here I have one question.

Do you think that when we get the book, the first chapter will be different or polished up compared to what was released to the Card Game Backers?

It'll very likely be polished up a bit. From what I've read, this is basically an excerpt from the first draft.

Alright. Thanks to an amazing benefactor I have been exposed to Chapter 1, and i agree Aekiel, now for my thoughts on the chapter.

The weight vest made me shake my head. He's totally training to kick ass!

I don't think the % of pregnancy fatalities is realistic. None of those previous statistics had a wizard, and winter knight as a *Quasi* brother-in-law either. Meaning... I think Justine is going to live.

I also believe that the fact that the Fomor have called this meeting is very foreshadowing. I see them trying something at this conference. I mean guys, think about it. they are the BORG of the Dresden files! You know jim likes Star Trek.

Jim has already stated that Peace Talks will be the most supernaturally violent book so far.

LittleChicago: I just joined the forum specifically because of your very nice offer in the first post but for some reason I can't PM you. If the offer still stands, can you point me int the right direction?

Also this is the first book to be set less than 3 months after the last.
