Yeah, it has to be a colour name.

I saw JRRN (Journey) proposed somewhere, which is appropriate, though I do also like RNJR. Besides, we've met other teams at this point that were obviously not color names. It's also entirely possible and even likely that they will deliberately avoid giving themselves a team name, because they want to hold onto the memory of JNPR and the hope of RWBY.

I don't know what to think about this show.

No, that's wrong. I know I like it, I'm just confused as to why.

Because if I take any single element, it's average at best. The problems have been brought up ITT a ton: clunky writing, clunky animation, clunky voice acting, etc.

I think the root of why this show works is that I have kind of an "underdog" / low expectations feeling about it, and it manages to just completely punch above its weight when it comes to style / emotion. (I think the music has a lot to do with that: the soundtrack to RWBY is pretty damn stellar and fits the atmosphere nicely.)

RWBY is unapologetic in the way it borrows from everything: fairy tales, myths, pop culture... hell, even general "heroic tropes," I feel like they just data-mined TVTropes and said "fuck it let's use all of them."

But... it works, somehow. I find myself constantly excusing its flaws, or not caring about them, or just kinda letting them wash over me.

I think that mishmash of tropes really is the key, now that I'm thinking about it. Because it's very vague, yet at the same time I kind of intuitively understand the rules. If you're borrowing from every single heroic trope, then of course the tempo of a fight varies according to the narrative tension of the moment. That just, like, how stories work - only here it's so blatant that I actually don't care. The show has constantly gone out of its way to show that its true consistency lies not in any one particular set of "rules" that drive the fighting/magic system, but rather a very loose set of guidelines that are anchored by the rule of narrative drama.

I think if the show actually tried to be more "real" or consistent, it would bother me that it was failing, because come on, it would just fail. Like imagine if they went to great lengths to really define the power levels, if the Maidens had a set scope of powers that worked in very specific ways... that would be pretty bad, I think.

The whole thing is really just in an interesting niche for a "serious" show - living on style and looseness and the glimmers of interesting characters that sometimes shine through - and in letting that looseness be a part of the show, they leave room for me to imagine the depth that might be there, rather than trying to show it and disappointing me because it's not.

"RWBY: Somehow It Just Works" should be the show's tagline.

You managed to put into words everything I've been feeling for the last two weeks, when I finally got around to picking up RWBY, knowing that Season 3 was coming to a close.

I just kind of like the show despite its many obvious flaws. Usually flaws noticable enough for me to see them on first watching a show are enough to make me quit, but there was somehow enough intersting stuff going on that it kept me watching.

And come the end of Volume 3, I think the only thing that can really explain how I feel about RWBY is that, with the finale finished, I am ready for Volume 4.

Interesting way to think of it. I don't necessarily disagree because I have the same feeling I guess.

What I think sells this show for me is the same bit in every work that strokes the bit of my brain that writes fanfiction.

There's so much stuff that should be good. So many characters, if written well (Blake, Weiss, Ruby even, Jaune, Cinder, I could go on and on) could be so, so, so good.

But I don't expect it to happen - they've proven by this point that their characters are flat and a little cardboard-cutout-y.

At the same time, as with the characters, there are little details about the world which just seem to touch all the right buttons. They're never truly explained in any meaningful way, but watching something that's this minimalistic not by any particular choice forms these rich, sprawling headcanons and every episode makes me reconsider my headcanons.

When it's all said and done, I don't think RWBY is particularly good. But I love it anyway.

It's more about that they had an idea and went with it. Is it very well done? No. But at least there's not a fuckton of creepy fanservice.

I'm not at the point where I drop otherwise good anime for any gratuitous fanservice. It has no place in non-porno anime. If you want to look at it go watch some porn ffs.

Yeah. Rwby has absolutely no creepy fanservice at all.

Now excuse me while I go hug my Weiss body pillow.

Similar to most, I find series average but there is something funny that draws me to it.

Dragon Grimm got me thinking. How more are out there? And how old are they-it is giant when compared to Goliaths. Does it mean it is intelligent?

It seems that Cinder has power to control Grimm, or that for some reason, Dragon trusts her.

I don't think silver eyes are Maiden thing ( also, effect wasn't really good).

Twist with Salem was good. I saw some people theorising she is living at some sort of Underworld, but given that we see Moon, I would say it is most likely some of Grimm conquered Wild. Also, anybody thinks all that crystals around her are Dust?

Can't believe I forgot to comment, oh well. Great episode, the show has grown up, I'm so fucking proud. I didn't like the silver eyes thing that much, but I'll trust Roosterteeth to make something good out of it.

Had to go a few pages back, but worth it.

Exactly. All by myself, can you believe it?

Edit: Also, did you guys notice that Goodwitch kept repairing the area destroyed by the Grimm? It's a pretty pointless action and it might be a foreshadow concerning her mental health, after all losing Ozpin and Beacon is a pretty big blow on her.

I like the theory that since Cinder can split things into particles and reassemble them, like her arrows during the fight, and since Cinder didn't vaporize the Fall Maiden when she killed her, that instead of killing Pyrrha, she teleported her elsewhere. Maybe to that Salem character, maybe somewhere else.

Could fit with the whole "do you believe in destiny" thing, Pyrrha was wrestling with. After all, she didn't exactly fulfil hers yet. So, who knows.

Pyrrha's Voice Actor confirmed Pyrrha was dead and done. Also I think she might only be able to control Glass because I THINK that's what she uses (not metal for sure or Pyrrha would have used her semblance on it).

They were going for a thematic death with Pyrrha, but it was kinda shallow. She got shot in the heel, woo. If it was really thematic, they would've emphasized her pridefully thinking she could take on Cinder by herself. It's pretty clear that she was making a general heroic sacrifice in the episode though.

Missed opportunity, there. I have a feeling they'll do the same with Jaune.

To echo the comments above, I have zero expectations of this show, so I can honestly enjoy it most of the time.
