I know there's a thread for this somewhere (isn't there?) but I can't find it, so perhaps merge if need be.

Regardless I'm looking forward to this book, and we now have release date, cover art, and a blurb (the latter two on Butcher's facebook page).

Note... if I missed the main thread, please merge. I swear I can't find it.

Looks and sounds like something I would buy/read.

Originally when this was first announced, I had very little interest in it. I've never been the biggest fan of Steampunk, and I always wanted more Dresden.

This though, this has made me surprisingly excited. It sounds a lot more adult than I thought it would be from all the previous mentions.

Butcher did a live reading and there's a video of it on Youtube. Io9 also has an excerpt from chapter 2 of the book here. Needless to say, September can't come quickly enough. The book has catz, what's not to like?

Looks pretty cool. I'll probably buy it.

Speaking of which I should probably read more of Codex Alera at some point. I've still only finished the first one, and that was a few years ago now.

I loved Codex Alera, especially the later ones. I'd recommend you try again :p

On the Aeronaut's Windlass, I read that sample chapter, and it sounds a lot more strategic in the battles than I expected, and the world building has me interested already. Definitely looking forward to it.

You're not the only person I've seen with a dislike for Steampunk, not even close.

What's up with that? Is there a reason why people hate on it? It doesn't seem like we've come close to oversaturation.

I mean, Steampunk and Sky Pirates virtually go hand in hand. Seems like this'll have that too. I'm not seeing downsides...

Because Steampunk isn't Steam or Punk anymore.
All it seems to be recently is slapping gears on tophats or monocles and calling it a day.

Why is a merchant ship named predator? Anyways, seems a bit like the early MtG novels.

Oh look, it's yet another "political infighting blinds humanity to a looming existential threat that they can only defeat if they unite" plot.

On one hand, yeah, I've had some problems with Dresden Files over the years and I am kinda sick of the seeming reuse of that particular trope that Taure pointed out. Besides the protag seems to be nothing really new either.

On the other hand, despite my problems with DF, I did and do enjoy the Dresden Files when I read them and I had a ton of fun with Codex Alera and I am willing to give this book a chance as Butcher has more than earned the benefit of the doubt.

So, looking forward to it but not exactly psyched would be my mood.

Does anyone know how this bookseries will impactthe DF schedule? Talked with Jarik about a few weeks ago but seeing as many here are in their twenties, some late, some early, but given the one book a year schedule at best, with ten more or so books remaining, we will be near 40 when the series is wrapped up.

That's a bit weird to imagine. No idea how I will feel about the books then.

Not like it's getting less relevant.

The problem is that the in-fighting is inevitably much more interesting, which means that the climax of the series, when people finally unite, is also the most boring part.

It does sound cool...but then, so did Codex Alera, and while I read that and enjoyed it well enough, it never wowed me the same way Dresden did. So I think cautiously optimistic is probably the best way of looking at it at the moment.

So.... basically just a book about Balthier?

No but seriously... this looks great. Here's hoping it's not first person.

That's essentially the problem with CA. Massive anti-climax, the GoTness nature and politicking was far more interesting.

What I'd like to see is a huge build up of this other-worldly super-evil... then have it dealt with in the second book, leaving the cats and humans to be assholes for three more books.

Seriously though, the world-building is going to be the key to this. Butcher did what I would call a 7.5-8 out of 10 on the world-building in Alera. Just from what I've read, I'd hope for more detail with this universe.

I'll probably read the first one just because I tend to like his style, but no promise on book 2. I do enjoy steampunk, but I agree this is part of that bastardpunk we've come to see in the last few years. Here's hoping he finds a way to keep it fresh.
