Also known as "Tony Stark holds the idiot ball for an entire movie".

Civil War could have been great, if it had been written in such a way so as to give each side equal legitimacy. But the way it was written, Tony was just wrong. And not even wrong in a vaguely justifiable way. Idiot ball levels of wrong.

From memory, in the pre-release interviews a director or producer said that they thought Tony's actions in the Civil War comics were him being comically bad, but their reinterpretation for the CW movie would make things much more realistic, such that audiences could easily side with him or Cap.

Tony’s actions in Civil War were highly sympathetic. Even if I lean more towards Cap...there are a lot of people I know who leaned towards Tony.

Funnily enough...those who supported Tony were more of my liberal friends and cap more of my conservative friends.

To the people who kept up to date with it before the film’s release, did anything from that last supposed leak turn out to be true?

From what I read yeah 90% true. Difference likely came to east minute editing.

I had few problems with the time travel. Not to say I’m a genius who completely followed the on-screen explanation but I have read/watched a lot of scifi where the explanation of branching realities was the mechanism used. In that sense, the only thing that confused me was that everyone could return to the same timeline when they were all done. By the rules I understand, they should have ended up in the futures of the realities they spontaneously created with their actions. Once I accepted that break it didn’t seem hard to follow at all.

Girl power moment struck me a bit like Black Panther and Captain Marvel did. It made me slightly uncomfortable, then made me uncomfortable that I thought it was uncomfortable, then I just set it aside with “well, I’m sure I’m not the target audience... so good for them.”

There were lots of moments I liked and some I saw the theatre stand up to give applause for, but for some reason the scene that made me actually speak up was the Asgardian Palace guards screaming for somebody to “stop that rabbit!”

EG will definitely slide into my Top Ten of MCU but I’m waiting for my internal hype to die down before I decide if it’s worthy of my personal Top Five, which is currently at:
    1) Iron Man 1
    2) Ragnarok
    3) Winter Soldier
    4) Avengers 1
    5) Guardians of the Galaxy vol. 1

The way I saw it was the Quantum Realm gizmo acted as an anchor of sorts, so they could return to their origin timeline.

With Cap's return, I think they intentionally broke the rules (alternate reality / need the gizmo) so they could have a better final scene for him. If he just returned to the gizmo as an old man, that would have a far lesser impact.

Tony created a quantum GPS though, so I'm okay with handwaving it as Cap having lived out his life over there and then came back in a slightly different fashion using that as the base for finding his way w/o the main gizmo.

Finally saw it. Not as good as Infinity War, but ultimately satisfying.

I both loved and hated Fat Thor. I look forward to seeing him in GotG3. Having the Big Lebowski on the ship should be pretty amusing.

I've never actually felt my skin crawl like it did during the 'girl powah' scene in the final battle. Look at the Wanda vs Thanos scene - that's how you show a badass character. Every woman in the entire series somehow showing up in the exact same spot was hilarious though. I legit thought they were taking the piss when Mantis and Schuri showed up, but eh, what are ya gonna do?

I wasn't massive on Thanos holding his own without any stones against not only Thor, but Stark and Cap too. I'm putting that down to Fat Thor stuff and trying to ignore my brain screaming at me.

But yeah. Fav parts were Wanda vs Thanos, everything Stark pretty much (particularly Pete watching Stark die, fuck, the feels) and the Clint/Natasha soul stone scene.

I actually thought they handled the time travel stuff relatively well too. Arguably done the best 'logically.'

So yeah, while I feel cheated because I waited so long for BAMF Thor to come, only for him to disappear, Stark's arc was so well realised I couldn't stay mad.

Regarding the Scarlet Witch vs Thanos and how some people complained of varying power levels between IW and EG:
I didn’t see Wanda suddenly having less relative strength between the two movies (how she should have defeated Thanos on her own and gone back to the rest of the fight). Instead, I saw a raging mad witch who wanted to make someone suffer and intentionally drew out his takedown (to her eventual detriment, but hindsight).

Also it didn’t happen, but it would have been neat if somewhere during the planning montage there was a scene where Scott just goes “...but what if we—“ and someone else interrupts, “No! That’s worse than Rhodey’s idea!”
Referencing the meme while still maintaining some plausible deniability.

I loved the movie. I thought the girl power moment was cheezy for the obvious reasons, but I also noticed after Natasha died that there were only dudes left, so I felt it coming. I remember thinking that Cap'n Marvel shouldn't have needed their help, but I didn't think to much on it. Everything was so awesome, I didn't care how forced it was.

I don't have one favorite moment. Captain getting the hammer was dope, Scarlet Witch vs. Thanos was dope, Clint vs Nat was a punch right in the feels... "On your left." was also amazing.

Every scene Morgan Stark was in made me tear up because I knew what was coming.

Rocket has further cemented himself as my favorite Guardian. I love that rabbit.

Sean Gunn and the CGI guys & gals do a fantastic job with the mocap, but Bradley Cooper also plays a huge role in the popularity of the character. His VO work really is top notch.

It was worth waiting for and a fitting tribute to a decade of movies. The Russo brothers pulled off something unprecedented on that scale, (Whedon might have layed the groundwork but he didn't have to juggle this many balls.) Well done to them. It's quite a send-off.

    That being said...

The girl power moment was dumb but not the worst ever. It was a bit like Marvel being like, I know 90% of the principle charecters are guys but look at all the girls in the cast! Scarlet Witches moment felt a lot more organic and fuck yeah.

Most of the great moments have been mentioned. I loved fat!Thor as a concept, but I felt that his emotional journey felt... hammy. They didn't find the balence between the joke and the actual earnest damage underlying it for me.

Thano's new plan felt shitty. The whole complexity of his charecter and motivations got tossed out to raise the stakes right at the end. Hell, I'm pretty sure he could have clicked all memory of the click out of existence with his all powerful magic rocks.

It wasn't as good as the first, it felt overlong at the beginning and the end (considering the immense cast it probably couldn't be helped) but as a way to wrap up a decade of movies it was the perfect plot line to do. I enjoyed it, I want to do a marathon and go see it again after building up to it properly.

My kidneys just exploded, grandpa Simpson style.
Hot take: fat Thor is best Thor, particularly the scene at the end on board the milano.

Worst part was probably the forced female march toward the time portal when captain Marvel did like thirty mph when she's just zipped in at near light speed for no reason. Too contrived for the cinematography in a movie filled sith contrivances that I could tolerate.

EDIT: shit, I guess it turns out I'm sexist.

I guess my two points would be:

    1) personal preference: I'm not a big fan of some of the style of 'crowning moments of awesome' for the vista of Captain America against Thanos and the arrayed armies, I liked the image. Almost straight after, I rolled my eyes at 'Avengers Assemble'. Didn't get feels for Peters speech return because it felt forced (also drew my attention to Dr. Strange teleporting from Titan, which I thought he couldn't do). Didn't really get a hard on for I am Iron man in the way many did. Otoh, I really liked how Natasha cried at her desk after trying to stay relevant, and her competition with Clint. Really liked Thor's conversation with his Mum/Tony's scenes with his daughter. Or when he figures out time travel. I prefer it understated to overstated I guess.

    2) The play itself. In IW, I liked the female battle. You could see what they were going for but it didn't feel token. Shuri on the field, heck all of them on the field to 'clear the way' for the most batteringest battering ram in the universe, Captain Marvel is patently nonsense. If it had been the other way round, maybe Shuri had to have the gauntlet for some tech reason, that would've been fine. The other part is that is was literally every woman they could get their hands on, and it felt like it was reaching. Evangeline Lily? Pepper Potts? And the way it was sequential. It just panned and kept plus oneing and twoing women into the mix. To me it felt like it reduced them as heroes not glorified them.

Now to read the thread and see what I missed.

I can't imagine this. That would make me shudder.

Double edit: to be clear, I loved it. I really really enjoyed it. There were a few bits that required some mental agility, but like an acrobatic page of the karma sutra, when a relationship has reached eleven years and the love's still strong who's not willing to put in the effort?

Everything Captain Marvel felt forced, irritating and nonsensical. A last minute cram job... For what?

She either needed do be introduced earlier so everything felt earned and not crammed in, or after the Infinity War saga.

Either way, I won't have the same connection with what they do next as I did with the original trio (tony, cap, thor). I just find Brie Larson wooden and unlikable, and it looks like she'll be crammed down our throats whether we like it or not.

She lacks Tony’s charm necessary to be the arrogant avenge, plus..that role is kinda taken by Strange.

I wish Wanda was the new female face of the MCU.
