In the spirit of this thread, I'm going to search for that horrible smut piece I had Xion quote for me earlier. I have a feeling I wont be able to find it, since it wasn't on any major fanfiction site at the time, but I'll still try.

I must make everyone feel my pain.

well for mine, In actuality it all started with smut.

14 days in christmas by resistresist
    It was hosted on adultfanfiction.net

It was a pretty good story, and its what started me on my 3 year harmonian phase. I don't think there was one ounce of magic uttered in the story, so I was spared any soul bonds and all that crap.

Unfortunatley at the time the site was having troubles staying a float and the authors work was erased. I think the waybackmachine might have some chapters but i'm not sure. Theres another piece of work with pansy and snape, from the same author, it had me laughing and heaving a couple of times. I think you can still find that one floating around.

After that site, I found myself searching for harry hermioan fics, wound up at harryloveshermione.com, read taste by the site owner, and found a home lurking on portkey.

yup smut started it all... its sad, because it's true.

There you have my sordid history.

Not sure if I posted so I'll post now.

My first HP fanfic was Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix by Ruskbyke I think his name is. Same guy that wrote that Hellraisers/HP xover. The phoenix who had all those souls in it and the big book of every spell ever created.

First fanfiction was some stupid Inuyasha story. Dont remember which.

    God...the good old days

My first ever fanfic was some Dragonlance piece of crap that ended with Raistlin somehow having a half-Canadian, half-Jewish (they're almost the same thing, I know, but come on...Canadian!), and some half-cow/elf whore thing. Not too sure. I do remember that someone got their head chopped off. [/Homer Simpson gurgling noise].

Anyway, my first HP fanfic was either the Refiner's Fire duology, or a very good story about a Harry who goes dark after fourth year and learns some pretty cool magic, like Void Magic. I don't think I ever finished that story though. It was pretty good, and there was no pairing. Which is a god-send in these days of slash-infested angsty teenage shit writing. Whatever happened to personal shitty poetry? Why God? Why did the emo bratz have to invade the internet? Why fanfiction?

    Same here.

As I recall, it was actually a good story and he had a sequal to Ring of the Ancients, but I didn't read it before I lost the site. Does anyone have those stories lying around?

Huh. I can't remember the first fanfiction that I read. What I do remember is that I was then pregnant with my second child (currently seven and a half years old) and couldn't sleep, so I was playing around on the computer late at night. There was only so much Civ I could do (That might have actually been Civ 1 back then... possibly the newly released Civ 2.) so I stumbled on to something strange and new... fanfiction.

It was in the Buffy the Vampire Slayer fandom, and followed Willow, who was then my favorite character. I found several Willow-centric sites, learned about 'shippers (and all the more I will say is tht some are rabid, some pick pairings that I simply don't understand, and that they exist in every fandom), learned painfully about why it is very important to have the pairings clearly marked and not just give a few single-letter initials, and learned about the frustration of 'this hasn't been updated since when?!?'

Some of the sites contained what were marked as 'Crossovers' - and when I first saw them, I said "huh, what's that? The title sounds interesting, I might as well take a look...." I read, I liked (well, I liked some of them).

Yes, I also very rapidly learned that not all fanfiction is well written. My problem is that I hold the fics I read to a similar standard as the printed reading materials - and if it's not that good (or midnight and me feeling rather grggy) then why should I spend my time on the fanfic instead of a printed book?

The very first fanfic that I ever wrote was in the X-men fandom, and I think that was around 2002. Looking back at it, I have to say that it was still better than some things out there (just look at fanfiction.net sometimes, my eleven year old can do better than some of them. For that matter, my seven year old can come up with better stories than some of them. Her spelling's on par with some of what I've cringed at too.) With practice, my writing has made significant improvements.

A great deal of my own writing has been either BtVS or BtVS/crossovers, and part of that is that I feel that if a story has already been told well, I don't need to tell it again. I have only felt that I had a few tiny stories that hadn't already been done in the HP fandom, so I haven't written very many purely HP fanfics. None of them were actually shippy. Two were rather short character introspections, and there was a two-part with the main characters of Draco and Ginny set just after the Diary in Ginny's first year. They were not friends, they were not dating or pre-dating. They just had an almost civil conversation, once from his PoV and once from hers.

Frankly, I'm amazed at the dedication and sheer size of some of the HP fanfics that I've seen. Many of them eclipse printed novels in size, and there are more than a couple that I've seen that were as well written as novels that I've purchased in bookstores.

For me it was Elemental Genesis.

I loved that fic so much and waited eagerly for updates to the sequel that seemed to never come.

Going back to it now I dunno what my reactions to it would be but I'm not sure it would be quite as positive.

It's Star Wars/Star Trek X-over and still one of the best pieces of fanfiction I've ever read even years later (though that may be looking at it through rose-colored glasses). Here's a link for anyone interested (It's not on FFN and the author takes months between updates so It can be a bit of a pain to follow but it's awesome so...)

I can truthfully say that my first foray into the world of fanfiction may well be lost to the winds of time, but I like to think that my first fic ever read was "Daigakusei no Ranma." It was a continuation of Ranma 1/2, considered at the time to be the official unofficial continuation of that series. That was at least six years ago.

First HP-related fic was a Ranma/HP crossover, which died shortly after it began, so I forgot its name.

And my first plain HP fic was something like "Elf Harry," or something, it was one where Harry became an elf, or was an elf to begin with, or something. Thankfully, I skipped past the canon fanboyism most new genre fic readers fall into, and skipped straight to the much more sensible Honks fics, and independant Harry fics.

You're thinking of the author HarryWriter. 5th year was Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix. 6th year was Harry Potter and the Ring of Ancients. 7th year was never finished or written or shared.

To the best of my knowledge the only semi-authorized copies and location are here: http://www.forome.net/

From that page in the title bar is "HW Series" with 'Book V' and 'Book VI'.

I know a lot of people stumbled across HarryWriter's fics when searching for early bootlegs of JKR's novels.

My first story was German and a gift of some friends who couldn't bear to hear my complaints as to how long it still was until the next book came out...

My first English one was the Amulet of time series of which I read the German translation and wanted to know the original. From there I found ff.net.

And yeah, I found those when searching for OotP before it was released, heard rumors it had been seen on the Internet, but stumbled on HarryWriter's version, been reading fanfics ever since.

My first fanfiction read was actually one based on the MUD DragonRealms many many many years ago. I've read so many since then I have no idea what the first HP fanfiction I read was, but I think it may have been a Slytherin!Harry fic.

Damn, that was years ago. Hmmm... The first one I ever read was this Inuyasha fic that I don't remember the exact details about, but it had something to do with him coming into the future world and helping with some crime investigation or something. Anyways, six years later and I'm still hooked, though now on Harry Potter.

Mine was, The Awakening Power by Sib. Classic Fic, don't think I'll ever forget it. it was a damn good plot, even if he was with Ginny, but he did it in a non-sickening way. Fond Memories.

  17. Mine was Harry Potter and the Year of Discovery which is hg though even at the time I kept reading it because it was funny as hell. The 1st fanfic on ff.net was PoT by rossWrock which despite its description remains pure (no hg)

Lol, A lot of people got started via Barb's Trilogy. Although I already read the first two before I began to seek out others.
