I think it's implied that memory-altering spells fool those methods though, isn't it? Confoundings alter your perceptions, thus also your memories of events, right? And also a wizard can deliberately fudge a memory into being different in a pensieve, so I think it follows that a "disturbed" individual such as Harry was painted to have been would not have an accurate recollection of what happened.
