Welcome to the DLP Competitions for the Second Quarter of 2020!

    Topic: 70 Years Later

Note: This topic is not as strict as some of you may be thinking. It can be '70 years later' from, well... any point in time. Maybe Godric has a prophecy that 70 years later he'll meet his best friend, Salazar. Maybe Trelawney makes a prophecy in Harry's fifth year that 70 years later he'll die. Maybe Dumbledore scrys something on his 30th birthday about something that will occur on his 100th. There is room to make this prompt work for you - flex those muscles.

    ========
"There were once three stories who were written by a hive of scum and villainy amidst the Corona Twilight of 2020… —"

Q2 is going to be three competitions overlapping! There are many threads, but this one is yours (April).

We had fun with Flash Fiction back in Q4 2019, so it’s time for a revival. Flash Fiction is traditionally defined as being under 1000 words, so let’s practice! We’re all working on our writing chops, and being able to tell stories in short format is good exercise for those muscles.

    Q2 2020 – April Competition (Flash!)
    Topic – ???
    Word Count: 500-1000 words
    Deadline – April 20th

You get the entirety of April 20th to finish your story. Send it to @Xiph0 via pm once you’re finished. Authors will be kept anonymous between the two of us. Feel free to use beta-readers but don’t post anything in WbA until after voting has ended.

Voting Rules will be posted shortly before the deadline. Expect them to be more similar to the Q4 2019 rules than our standard ones, given that we are dealing with Flash again.

Go forth and fucking write! Also review.

WTF y'all picking Daily Prophet. I'm... between tipsy and drunk and seriously going WTF. All you assholes voting for that had better fucking WRITE for it.

Remember you ain't supposed to vote unless you at least plan to write. Don't make me make pissy PMs if you don't.

I think it has to do with the length. Like i suggested riddle in gryffindor in the prompts but voted for something else since I dont think i could get the depth in 1k words. Rather save it for a slightly longer competition (even 5k works) down the line. Same for 70 years later. Hard to do any real world exploration in 500-1k words. Some topics I think just go better for the flash writing (which can be more challenging then longer stuff!)

I tried to pick things for the polls that I thought might work in this word count format. My thinking was that 70 years later, for example, wouldn’t need exploration. It could have it, but it could also be short... but yes, that does explain it.

I liked these enough that I pulled together about 700 words that would fit a couple of the options here with some tweaking. If a different prompt wins I’ll still sort through and polish it before posting it somewhere.

    Maybe the 500 group.

I added two more choices to poll after realizing (belatedly) that we'd do well to have a more generic option given how short this one is.

Xiph0 is credited with "Founders" and I picked "Hogwarts" myself.

Feel free to change your vote (or not).

Out of curiosity, how strict are we with word count? I just finished a story thats 90 words over the limit (1090). I like the flow as is... if we are flexible and its a 'keep in the spirit of things;' I would leave it as it is. If this is super strict ill find a way to cut a bit and slim her down

"Very strict" is my understanding. Ched said during the last flash fiction comp that one entry that went slightly over couldn't win, iirc.

It will almost certainly be better for it!

    But yes it’s strict.

Heh I do assume the title and if i do a couple sentence summary/authors note that those dont count? If so im done!

edit to add: im also amused that i got this to be EXACTLY 1000 words

You shouldn't need several sentences summary or much of an authors note for a flash piece under 1000 I'd assume?

Title doesn't count towards word limit.

...I just realized that I didn't look at the word count before sending my piece in.

Eh, it wouldn't win any points anyways.

    VOTING INSTRUCTIONS!
    1. Review each story (preferably in spoiler tags) - there's no minimum amount to review for Flash, so just a comment will do even if more is preferred.
    2. Go vote for your TOP TWO stories using the poll below.
    VOTE HERE!

And here are the stories in case you somehow missed them: Stories!

Authors can vote this time but NOT for themselves - if you want to vote, vote for two choices that you didn't write. @Xiph0 can you PM authors to let them know that?
