I'm about to pull my hair out. Needing a short break from writing I decided to look for new (to me) fics. After about the fifteenth summary I read that was ruined at the end with a "SS/HP" or "Severitus" or "Snape!Guardian" etc etc I started feeling ill. When I hit #30 of interesting plot ideas ruined by the inclusion of Snape as anything other than fodder and I started bashing my head into the desk.

Why in the name of every god, of every culture to ever exist, does this facination with a worthless and overbearing character exist? Why must good plot concepts be ruined by the contorted and pathetic attempts to include a character whose single purpose should be to die horribly and then never be spoken of again?

    /rant off

PS: To anyone following The Legacy of Ancients the next chapter will include Snape. Briefly.

    Whachoo talkin' 'bout, Willis?

I dunno about the Snape thing though. I guess it started with one fic, then went downhill from there. This is why scientists need to start getting crackin' on time machines. If we can just destroy that one fic from happening, we will save the fictionverse as we know it!

I think it'll take a lot more than destroying one fic to save the fictionverse. Much like the plague there are many forms and too many carriers to wipe out.

Although if we flame the first couple hard enough there is a chance (However slight) of deterring some of the others... Nah, who am I kidding. we'd have to stop the movies altogether...

    ...Hmm

Because like Snape is so sexy, with his skin the shade of sick daffodils, and eyes like creepy little beetles, and that nose that looks like an upside down coathanger. How could any obsessive fangirl resist Batman the Dungeon Dweller?

Well. I certainly feel ill now.

I can't help but wonder though if the Sheriff of Nottingham became the same sort of "oh he's really a good guy" character after Rickman filled the roll in Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves?

Edit: Oh wait. That was a Costner film so it had no fans to write fanfiction. My bad.

Snape as Batman the Dungeon Dweller, huh?
That might explain it, if Harry was made into a sidekick... no, there's no explanation... the sense of Snape's life is to die in the most painful way.
Besides, I wouldn't be surprised if he has some kind of antropophobia with his attitude to people, being the most antisocial person in the whole Potterverse and all.

If the story demands it and author is very good at characterizations, then I really don't mind Severus Snape being a main character. I have no problem with it at all.

Now, if he's just included for no other reason other than the author obsessing over the character, then that shit needs to go.
Indeed. He can be a main character in a story without reaming Harry in the arsehole, mentoring Harry or dotting on him like a mother hen.

So you say. At the moment this is just below "Big Foot" on my "Things said to exist, but without proof" list.

I quite liked Stronger than Hope by Alaunatar - a mentor relationship that wasn't sappy, had no "warning: spanking" warnings, and had a quite refreshing Dark Harry.

It would be interesting to read a Severitus fic were Harry finds out Snape raped is mother and rather then going all "I love you daddy" decideds to abandon his pursuit of killing Voldemort and goes after Snape instead.

    Snape: "Harry...I am your Father."

Harry: "I know you bastard! Avada Kedavra!"

    Snape: *dies*

I actually quite enjoy Snape as a character. He's a twisted fuck who is totally out for himself and plays both sides of the other. I like that. He is much to interesting to just kill off.

I agree with you. I always enjoy stories where Harry plays a role on both sides, pretending to be either good or evil while doing things for his own gain. Snape is a prick with greasy hair that can read your mind who does the same thing. Not as bad as Harry and Draco going to town on broke-back mountain in buttless chaps

Pfft. While he wasn't a 'main character', he played an important role in Thal's story. It was mostly behind the scenes and pre-story, but it was still there.
That's another, if I recall the story correctly. I might be thinking about a similar one.

I always thought that people who put Snape in a good light are people that got bullied in school. And for some reason they forgot to read the part about the cursing went both ways.

So they see Snape to be s missunderstood person instead of the annoyingly arrogant git that he is.

It's the same people that believe that there's good in everyone and that people can change for the better.
