I found this one a while ago and it's interesting so far. It advances pretty slowly, but for now it remains readable. It explores what would have happened if Naruto beat Sasuke at the Valley of the End, and agreed with Orochimaru to take him instead of Sasuke.

The glaring majority of Naruto fanfiction is decently crafted at the beginning, but drifts off towards the middle, when combat/action and romance become the focus of the story. The few stories that do not do this end before they begin.

Tempered in Water is the only active story that is any good anymore (For the Love of my Friends turned to shit when the author decided to add so much crappy filler). There are a million inactive-Naruto stories (for instance: http://www.fanfiction.net/s/3205579/1/Empyreal_Paradox) that are above average, and most of them are here, but for the most part, Naruto fanfiction is barren.

It's dissapointing, since it's like the second largest fandom.

 

"The Ice Princess of Konoha" by JohnnyG is abandoned as are the rest of his stories.

He left this note in his profile and other stories, claiming that he is through with fan fiction:

I respect his choice, but he could have spared us the crap about god...

I don't get it. It wasn't a rant about anything like he was describing in his "farewell address". There was nothing about obsession/giving his family grief – the only thing slightly related was that, as an author, he felt he shouldn't have written about his own personal values (and using fanfiction characters as vehicles to promote them), which quite frankly, was fine. Either way is fine, using characters for vehicles or keeping them true to character (although he couldn't have written much in the Narutoverse with his moral code, I think. They aren't compatible).

If he wrote to escape, I don't see what's wrong with that. A lot of people do art to escape. It's only escapism if you're NOT married and you have no job... and you're a bum, then it's escapism. Coping with stress by writing... that's not escapism. But whatever, he could have just made up a story like "I was poisoned by ninjas for writing fanfiction and my family will be killed if I don't stop writing" and we would have accepted it. His own person problems, he should have kept us out of.

I believe he's called himself an hypocrite because he went against what he claims to be his beliefs and the way god wants us to live. Or that's what I interpreted from the note.

Quoted for the Truth. I agree with you. He's the author and he's the one deciding if he wants to continue writing or not. It's his life.

Yes, he could have spared us the personal bit, or the religious speech, which the only thing it accomplished, was leading me to believe he has issues (and not with his family)

Authors Notes: Naruto’s personality will be much different, mainly because he will grow up differently, but also because I hate how the anime/manga portrays him as loud, idiotic, brash and annoying. One would think that growing up like he has he would have a more ‘somber’ personality. His personality is probably a mix between Neji and Itachi, leaning more towards Itachi without his ‘evilness’.
Naruto will be powerful, very much so. He will not go all ‘Kyuubi’ and use the demonic chakra during battles, opting to be smart and outwit his opponents. Also, he will not be able to ‘solo’ Akatsuki, that’s just stupid.

My Review: This is one of the best Naruto stories I've ever read. The authors notes pretty much says everything I wanted to say so I'm not going to repeat it here. There is humor in this fic which, in my opinion, works really well and had me laughing, something thats difficult to do in 'serious' stories.

Also the beefy chapters and decent update rate makes this a winner.

It doesn't really lie... it just doesn't matter. Fucking incredible one shot. Kinda gives me shivers though...

 

I only put that in so people who would skip over it because of the pairing would read it. (Hell, even I only just read it. I was only just bored enough.)

And yes, an incredible story. I'll never be able to look at the Naruto world again without thinking 'where does that fit in'.

 

The Hokage has his own personal spies and assassins through the ANBU. It does kind of make sense that the Council of Konoha would have its own spies and whatnot.

 

It's not just the organization. The members of Beta act the way 'real' ninja would. When placed alongside the 'normal' ninja of Naruto, one gets a feeling of wrongness. It just fits so well, that you could just see it. 'Battle Ninjas' being used and controlled by the real thing.

And it is implied that the Hokage controls it, i.e. he had to be asked for permission.

Which means it's a village-wide, top to bottom, conspiracy. On it's own forces. Hence, why it is awesome.

My Review: This is a Time-Travel fic, a good one at that. I'm not normally a big fan of these kind of fics but this is one of the few exceptions. It's well written with great characterization and battle scenes, grammar and and spelling are pretty good too most of the time. The plot is nothing spectacular but not crappy either.

Not really sure why I enjoyed this but I did, so I thought I'd share it. Decent HP fics are hard to come by and we gotta kill the time somehow, might as well be with Naruto.
