Why is "Harry" translated into "Гарри" when written in cyrillic? The same goes for Hermione / Гермиона.
My russian is a bit rusty but wouldn't "X" be a better transition than "Г"?
Better than having a "Garry" and "Garmiona" anyway...

 

No. If a European name begins with an H, in Russian it is, as a rule, transformed into Г (for instance Hitler is pronounced as Gitler).

And I think it isn't always so. Helga Hufflepuff for example is spelled

It would take a lot of linguistic research to really answer this question. For all practical purposes it is irrelevant; it's one of those things that you simply have to memorize when learning a language.

Yes, there are exceptions, and I would say those are made chiefly for euphonic reasons. Гаффлпафф and Гогвартс wouldn't sound very nice in Russian.
