I should be surprised at the low rating - but somehow, I'm not. Nice try, Bratling.:(

I was actually reading a fairly decent Good!Snape a few days ago. He wasn't Harry's father, but he ended up being a sort of "Uncle" to him, as well as his magical guardian. The gist of it was that he gave up on his petty Vendetta against the Marauders and left England, never joining the DEs.

It was interesting and pretty good, up until Nice!Dursleys and Wizard!Dudley made their appearance. At least Ron is pushed into the background.

There was one tolerable Severitus I read last year... Harry decided that the only way to kill Voldemort was to take him down through their connection together (Harry devised a way to kill Voldemort by killing himself). All the tension leading up to his sacrifice was great (Harry was dark, resolved, calculating, and "free")... until Harry was stopped, and the Severitus started.

They really became just rivals though, so it wasn't a total waste of time to read, I guess. I wouldn't read it now, but back then, it wasn't half-bad.

But this? Gag me with a spoon... or something. The problem with Severitus is that Snape is a shitty character and literally, his shittiness swells – inflamed by the author's shitty ability to write (thus the definition of Severitius – the inflammation of the Severus).

He's characterized as the 'poor love-lost antisocial teacher' who really, on the inside is soft and cuddly. Yeah, I'm sure. Give the man a real fault other than 'oh my crush died and I had a shitty childhood'. Would Harry have turned out like Snape is Ginny had married Neville or something? Ridiculous.

    My favorite Severitus-style is actually a Snape-adopts-Harry, not Snape's Harry's father.

Voldemort dies in chapter 4 (very nearly the beginning of the first book,) and then Dumbledore suggests that Snape adopt Harry, to help them both heal. I love watching Harry grow up, and the damage that Voldemort did to both of them healing. There are two sequels, one complete and a WiP. Harry becomes fairly super, but it takes a while and doesn't come easily. The other canon characters are allowed to be strong and competent, and the OC's are interesting and make sense.

Bit of a surprise to see this here. I've always enjoyed this fic, I found it well written and interesting with a detailed attempt to deal with the ethics of dark magic along with a good plot.

I'm also well aware that my tastes diverge from the DLP norm in several places and this really doesn't fit in with the sort of things the community focuses on. Personally I think it deserves a higher rating than this but it's really unlikely that it's going to get it for one very simple reason. It's simply not DLP material.

Severitus is NEVER tolerable to me. I cannot stress this enough. There is no way I can accept Snape being Harry's biological father and not want to gag.

You must be talking about "Stronger Than Hope" by Alaunatar. It cannot be considered as a Severitus fic as Harry is not Snape's son, but rather a partner working towards a common goal.

It is perhaps the only fic which is Snape-heavy and portrays him in a positive light that I can tolerate. In fact, I would not mind reading it again, and I'd gladly read a sequel if the author writes one someday.

The Harry-Snape interaction is done well, and so are the elements of Occlumency and Legilimency (which play a major role in the fic). I'd definitely recommend this to anyone with sometime to spare.

While I realize that there aren't many Severitus fans on DLP, there is still a category for it, even though the term is spelled wrong in the description. I debated posting it on here for a while, but, well, In Blood Only and A Year Like None Other are both in the library, and they're the other two classics in the genre. What I really hate is the "fail" ratings given before it's even been read! Yes, it's a long read. Yes, there's a chance that you might hate it. But since when isn't that an option when opening a story? Harry isn't whiny in here; he's almost a normal teenager, which is fine with me. Severus is neither a complete bastard nor gooey!Snape. I think that the middle-of-the-road approach is what makes this among the better Severitus stories. So yeah, I think this deserves a better rating than it's being given; seems to me that the majority of the ratings are because of genre and for bits taken completely out of context. Give it a real try. Read the first ten chapters or so before you chuck it. I try and do that with most new stories and have found some pretty good ones that way.

I usually don't bother posting in review threads when I haven't read the story -- and since I have no intention to read it, I won't give it a rating -- but I'll make an exception here. Although I can accept Harry and Snape working together as reluctant partners, the quotes Inferis gave make me want to vomit my entire digestive system.

I mean, picture Lily. Then picture Snape. Now, picture them both having sex. That's disturbing enough.

And now imagine that James, of all people, James the arrogant and possessive kid madly in love with Lily, gave Snape his blessing to get his wife, his wife, his wife, pregnant.

Fuck that shit. I can accept OOCness to some degree, but that's not even OOCness, that's ridiculous to the point where I wonder how anyone can keep a straight face when reading that. Who DOES that? Who the fuck gives a friend (since that's apparently what Snape was to James in the story) or even better, an ex-rival, permission to sleep with their wife and get them pregnant? And even if they were crazy enough to do it, you'd think the girlfriend would accept in the blink of an eye and not question her boyfriend's feelings? If the author's boyfriend ever tells her, "Oh hey, I gave my good buddy permission to fuck you and knock you up since he can't seem to get it up for anyone else, now get out of those clothes please, he's waiting in the next room," I damn well hope she'll be running in the opposite direction.

So yes, for that reason only, I'm not going to click that link. Some concepts may seem ludicrous at first sight and end up being well-written and made believable, but this just isn't it.

That good enough for you, lnky?

I usually equate normal with boring.

I'm in the middle of the first chapter. My impressions are not nice. First of all, the letter from Hermione at the beginning was most likely there to clear up the issue of the anger Harry has for Snape. But it was poorly done, as Harry had every right to be angry at him. You should remember the hate goes both ways. Harry has no incentive to learn because it's Snape of all people. Snape doesn't want to teach Harry, so he instead uses the lessons to torture Harry.

'Clear your mind' is hardly enough instruction. So, Snape is definitly at fault as well.

I agree with Tinn, also. The whole Herem thing is despicable. Yeah, well, boo hoo, Snape doesn't have a fucking wife, so he sleeps with somebody else's? The fact that James agreed to it makes me sick.

I'd like to mention that I hate it when letters arrive on a specific birthday.

Imagine the trauma: Your dad isn't your biological father. That's not something you heap on a teenager.

Especially when the father is Severus Snape.

The premise is important. Severitus has always been skewed and absurd, as well as illogical. This is no different.

I've really yet to see a good Severitus. Snape is a bastard. That's his personality. It's better to write him like that instead of completely changing him into a kind, loving man. I suspect this is what will happen here.

I don't want to take a different look at Severus Snape. In fact, I don't want to take a look at Severus Snape at all. The less said, the better. 1/5.

WTF? Why all the negativity? There's a hell of a lot of worse scenarios: Harry screwing his female self or his mother, that seem to be embraced by some younger males here. And there have been more than a few barely started fics that have Harry killing everything in sight that were highly rated despite poor writing.

It's a complete story, and an older story written before HBP, I believe, so judging it from a post DH view of canon is unfair. Yes, the challenge was an old one, and the author's choice of how he was made a parent was unique - but far better than ones where Snape raped Lilly and Harry comes to love him. Her grammar is better than average, and it's considered a classic in the genre.

Yes, it is an older fic, and I think that explains much about the characterization. Most other adults I spoke with at the time. hoped the adults in the story would show more humanity and basic competence in the later books.

Judging it from a post-DH view of canon? Where? In fact, the idea of Snape wanting to date/have sex with Lily is very post-DH in itself, so on the contrary it's flattering for the author. The fact that we hate Lily having accepted, on the other hand, is neither post-DH nor post-HBP nor post-any HP book after PS. Simply because even in PS we know that 1) Lily is a human being, and 2) Snape is an amount of grease, quite unlikely to make anyone want to considerate him in a romantic light -- which in fact makes him raping Lily the most probable scenario for a Severitus.

In the same spirit, James giving Snape his blessing to fuck and get his wife pregnant isn't bad characterisation, or post-DH viewing -- it's so idiotic that even apes facepalm when reading it, and disgusting to the point of making me consider becoming a lesbian. Which is saying one hell of a lot.

    Anything else?

I've bolded the parts of your comment that made me hate you. You're saying that Severitus is better than Harry/Lily. LIES!

Kindly step away from the keyboard, go to your local gun store, buy a handgun and ammo, load the gun and pull the trigger, smearing your brains (that's assuming you have any :)) on the nearest wall. Thanks for your cooperation!

Severitus? I'm not even going to read it so I can't really say how good it was (or more likely wasn't), but I know I would hate it.

You see, I could forgive you if this fic were well written. If it were well done, if the characterization was believable, and the author had explanations for, well, anything, I could forgive you for not conforming to DLP prejudices. You don't belong here, it's ok. But this?

This fic is shit. It is shit now, it will be shit forever, and it was shit when the author thought it up, most likely on the toilet.

Harry/F.Harry as well as Harry/Lily are both fucked up scenarios, which is why it takes a very SKILLED author to pull them off well. You need a twisted, disturbed protagonist to do them right.

Serveritus, however, simply cannot be done well. Mainly because the ENTIRE premise goes against any and all characterizations of all characters involved. The premise itself involves Lily being impregnated by Snape. If it was done through rape, than I'm pretty sure Harry would just kill Snape and go to prison for it (which could actually be a good fic...). If not, than the story is already moot.

To sum up, kindly GTFO. Or post your tits.

I disapprove of James-isn't-really-Harry's-sire stories, because of what it says about Lily, or in the weird cases, what it says about James, or in the Nasty cases, what it says about Snape.
I've read some wonderful "Snape adopts Harry," though. There has to be a major reason for the personality change, but a few authors really rise to the challenge. They can keep Snape tough and smart and complex and still make him a good enough parent.

You know what I'd like to see?

A story where Lily isn't Harry's mother. He looks JUST like his dad... a surrogate mother makes so much more fucking sense than a surrogate dad too.

It's harder to fake labour and delivery, you know. The baby would pretty much HAVE to be a home delivery, with no officials attendant. I'd arrange for it to be some sort of "emergency" delivery, isolated or with no time to get help. - the classics are generally
    1) stranded in a blizzard, (great excuse if you get a break on the weather)
    2) car accident, with delivery on the side of the road (difficult for wizardly people to accept)
    3) stuck in an elevator when the power goes out, and everyone has already gone home for the evening (nearly impossible to arrange for people who can apparate.)
    4) the "Trusted Retainer" ploy delivers the baby and lies like a trouper to keep the secret.
    Hmmm...
The thing is, WHY fake the mother? Unless Lily is sterile, and James doesn't want to divorce her, I can't think of a good reason for an elaborate hoax.

Err... people use surrogate mothers all the time. Being sterile due to spell damage is good enough reason for me.

And it's not like James has to fuck another woman. If we can do it in a test tube, they can do it with a spell.

Plus: All I'm saying is it'd be helluva lot more believable than a sterile James letting Snape impregnate his wife.
