Wands: A combination of nanotechnology and computer programming

This thread is about the technology that could be applied to create wands and flying broomsticks in reality.

For broomsticks, some sort of anti-gravity device would be needed(see1, see2).

I also had a theory that wands were a combination of nanotechnology(see) and computer programming(see).

I actually find the idea of "magical physics" the most interesting aspect of reading harry potter. Thinking of ideas on how to replicate HP universe technology, is quite fun. I'll go into other magical items in later posts.

For the wands to work, they would have to have some energy resource to draw from. That's where antimatter/dark energy would come in. Of course, we will have to figure out how to harness antimatter and dark energy first, not the easiest thing, but possible. :)

Yeah... or wands could use magic! You know, like in that weird series 'Harry Potter'...!

Just to stay on topic though, I will ask how you came to the conclusion that the obviously eminent creation of energy from Antimatter would then be able to make workable wands. I might even take back the- though you probably didn't know it was there- sarcasm...

Dude, this ain't the forum for that sort of speculation- Fictionalley is --> Thataway.

But anyways, you remind me of someone I ran into about a year back going on about making a super strong explosive utilizing HOT atoms, antimatter, and propane gas.

"And I think the explosion will be green"

Could a science based nation design a wand shaped object that would function like a wand? Possibly. Would there be any point?

    Not really.

As any self-respecting physicist will tell you, there is no such thing as "anti"-gravity. Actually, it's a well-known running joke, if someone yet again tries to "proof" its existence with one "experiment" or another -- which have all a funny thing in common, as soon as anyone a) wants to inspect it, the original inventor refuses, or b) if other people try to repeat it, it doesn't work.

That is not to say that there aren't many unexplainable phenomena -- but connecting them with "anti-gravity" does them actually a disservice, because it prevents them from being taken seriously.

Regarding that article, reading passages like this

makes me two things: angry on behalf of my fellow countryman, and annoyed at the author's attempts to somehow stick "antigravity" into it. Dark Energy is not a force, it's a (theoretical) substance, which simply has the curious nature of having a strong negative pressure, to explain the accelerated expansion of the universe.

Nothing against you, OP. At least, not yet :p -- but that article fails.

To the actual point of the post:

Are you one of those "Technomagic" fans, then? To each their own, I guess, but for me, it destroys a HP story when used. The same is true for any attempt to explain magic with science -- magic is magic is magic. So even if it wouldn't fail by default, because it's the logical antithesis to anything scientific, it still robs the magic of -- well, you're guessing it -- its magic.

And that includes bringing genetics into play on JKR's part.

I have no Problem with Technomagic, there are some very good movies/books/fanfics with it in out there. However it doesn't fit with the Harry Potter Universe. As for the Broom sticks, making one with nanotechnology, while POTENTIALLY cool, a) will cost a shit load, and b) most likely make you look like an Idiot.

and lastly a Plane is faster, and cheaper then a broom that flies could ever be made.

As for the wand... Why would you bother, honestly. You couldn't conjure stuff, or transfigure, or do most charms for that matter. Defensive and attacking magic would be pretty much the limit, and enough guns for a whole battalion would be cheaper most likely.

All in all there are far BETTER and CHEAPER ways to do the same thing for most magical stuff and nanotechnology has better things to be invested in.

Edit: Yes I have finally advanced to Squib.

While I agree with Sesc about the anti-gravity thing, I at least commend you for trying to break the hostility to technomagic here.
Now let me go hide in a bunker to protect myself from the irrationalist bombardment I know is coming.

The wizarding world already utilises "technomagic", in a way. Cameras and radios, for example.

The difference is that these are not Muggle devices which the magical world has then cast spells on, but rather magical devices that the magical world has made to imitate the effects of the Muggle one.

    How do you know that, Taure? D;

Don't forget guys and girls, Harry Potter is just a silly kids book filled to the brim with cliche's. There's no point trying to make it more technical than it seems.

You wouldn't be able to make wands and shit, based solely the fact that magic, (as far as I know) DOES NOT EXIST. Nanotechnology would NOT reproduce levitation, awesome soul destroying curses and creation of fire. Any broomstick able to support an anti-gravity device would NOT be on a broomstick. They'd probably have em as boots or a backpack or something.

tl;dr: No such thing as magic.

We've seen magical radios. It's not merely that they've taken a Muggle radio and made it run on magic instead of batteries - the whole device is different. You use a wand to tune into the station you want, for example. And I'm guessing they don't use radio waves, but some sort of Protean charm applied to audio.

I disagree about there being no such thing as magic.. but things like levitation and flying broomsticks are pretty ridiculous.

On the topic of nanotechnology, I figure there are better uses for it.. medical etc.. and even when we do turn to nanotech for warfare, it would be in the muggle way and not a mindset to recreate magic.

My personal opinon: Magic is magic, Technology is technology. Magic does not work by any rational laws of physics known to humanity, and while there may well be some rules of magic in most cases they're really more like guidelines than ironclad rules; generally the hero in any magic-based fantasy work will end up violating at least half of any set of "rules of magic" in the course of a story. This is in complete opposition to the principles upon which technology is based.

Attempting to mix two complete opposites does not work well in the natural world, regardless of what old cliched sayings about how opposites attract might claim. Mixing matter and anti-matter tends to lead to big explosions and lots of dead people, and when mixing magic and techonology the effects are much, much worse. As soon the two start mixing there's mass chaos, and after that it's only a matter of time before bears will be running around raping your women:

So, unless you want to see your sisters, wives, daughters, and girlfriends (not to mention yourself if you're one of DLP's female posters) defiled by ursines make sure to keep magic and technology seperate and distinct.

Wait, are you talking real-life here? You think magic exists IRL?

Have you read the Greater Key of Solomon for example? I mean, I don't intend to presume anything, but I'd like to believe the world is not so mundane.

You'd think Crowley and that lot would've actually had a reason to dedicate their whole lives to the occult.
Oh well, like chaos magicians say, Nothing is True, Therefore, Everything is Permitted.

    C-c-contradiction!

Never heard of the Greater Key of Solomon.

Also, lol. I just noticed your sig. "Chaoschaoschaoschaos". That should have been a clue.

I've never played that game D:

It's both strange and oddly fitting that a bunch of people who read childrens stories about magic wouldn't be open minded enough to think it might exist in some form.

Also the greater key of Solomon is just some ancient text. I read a lot so yeah. I used to read books about chaos theory, it's pretty interesting. Sorry if that offends you somehow.

I'm open minded enough to try the various sexual fetishes my girlfriend has.

    Magic, though? Gtfo >.>

That's because we understand the difference between real life and fantasy. I've done ouija boards, I've attempted telekinesis, I've seen people try the 'light as a feather, stiff as a board' thing. None of it has worked to my satisfaction, so I don't believe it.

As for demon summonings... Please. Beings that break the natural rules of the universe just by being are not something that computes well with me.

Err, you realize the Key of Solomon dates 14th CCE at the oldest, no? Some medieval scholar got bored and wrote it for shits and giggles; it has precious little to do with the actual King Solomon or his supposed magical prowess.

I've looked through a great deal of the Left Hand religions, and, while the philosophies are (with the possible exception of Sethianism) generally intriguing, the metaphysics universally strike me as bullshit at best. Magic is relegated to myth and fantasy for a reason.
