It's a little over 81k words and a slight cross-over with Battle Royale. To quote BajaB's review of the story a

Besides, those really are not spoilers. That's a review. There is nothing essential to the stroy revealed, only how one person felt about it.

 

I find that it's only good if you don't know the plot of Battle Royale. It, more or less, follows the plot of Battle Royale.

Still an entertaining read, 3/5.

It suffers the problem that nearly all battle royale fics suffer, we have to wait fucking ages for the protagonist to stop being a whiney emo dipshit, finally take his dick out of his ass and fucking kill somebody and even then he doesn't fucking do it (dieing nobley instead).

Neville was pimp with the machine gun though.

OK skipping through the chapters, it is literally a rehash of Battle Royale with a substitution of names, I'm actually thinking this could fall foul of plagiarism rules, the situations are the same, the deaths are the same, the names are just different. It's been too long since I read Battle Royale for me to really judge.

I know only of the general gist of it and have not read battle royale..if it is bascially just a name switch, then this fic should be dropped faster than a hooker with STD. Sorry for putting it up. And thanks for editing my post/telling me how to post in spoilers.

 

Problem is I'm not sure it's just a name switch, most of the death scenes I read seemed eerily similar to what I can remember of the BR manga. It might just fall under the term canon rehash, but I felt that it may actually be close enough to the original to qualify as plagiarism.

 

Most likely a copy of the original, just replacing names from the HP universe. It wasn't a great story...

 

While it is a rehash of the original Battle Royale, I still half liked this fic from a guilty pleasure standpoint. Or perhaps I just like the 'idea' of the fic, more so than the fic itself.

Regardless - it's well written, complete, and it has enough 'differences' in deaths/outcome than the Canon to make it an enjoyable read.

I'd love to see a skilled author with a bit of a creative/sadistic streak take this concept and run with it, though. I could imagine a DLP-centric Battle Royale fic being potentially epic.

3/5 for me. Not library. Recycle-bin quality, though, I'd say - simply because it's a quick guilty pleasure read for anyone who hasn't read the original Battle Royale, and perhaps even for those who have.

 

...er...this might not have been as fail as it was if the author had included some magic in it. Machine guns? Hotwiring cars? Crossbows? This is a Battle Royale fanfiction with a few different names.

Besides, I hate it. The plot is unbelievably retarded, even for a Harry Potter fanfiction. The Ministry decides to cull the Sixth Year class so they make them all kill each other? That sounds...well, retarded. I didn't read much, to be honest, because...again, it was just so retarded. I couldn't even read this for a guilty pleasure- mostly because there wasn't any pleasure in reading it.

And before people come in and say 'but that's how the real Battle Royale movie was set', well, the movie is retarded as well.

Edit: I just skimmed to the end and I still believe it's retarded. Now, I don't know about you, but if a bunch of arseholes made me fight my friends to the death, the first thing I would do after I had 'won' would be to kill the sons of bitches. Instead...he just goes back to school...and that's it. I'm kinda pissed off at this shitty ending.

 

I became aware of this story when I posted my own Battle Royale crossover idea on another site. Shinoko's writing is competent mechanically and stylistically, but I have the same reservations with the basic story as Shezza.

This crossover is a case where you can't stick too close to Koushun Takami's original story and have it work; BR is an indictment of hyper-competitiveness in Japanese schools and society, something that grinds gears when you try to do it with a Harry Potter cast while changing little else of substance.

 

Ugh...I have to agree with shezza and pers on this one. I couldn't make it past the third chapter. This is not a Harry Potter story; it's not even a crossover. There's no 'Harry Potter' present except the names the author decided to use.

This. BR fics are the weirdest fucking subspecies of HP fic. They do shit that any other fic would (rightly) be blasted for, like making NO FUCKING SENSE but any criticism just gets "you don't know BR!".

I think I could pull one off that wouldn't be completely made of teh suk (I think I've got a pretty compelling story idea, actually), but then perhaps I don't know Battle Royale...

 

Well, story sucks, the reasoning behind why they put the teens on the island sucks.

However, i did find the events on the island to be fairly entertaining and actually had a good time reading this.

The ending sucked though.

Perhaps it may have been better if the author made the weapons magical, for instance, wands that can only fire 1 type of spell each? I'll love to see the person with a Cheering Charm succeed. =)

But otherwise its just like any other BR fic, long, multi chapters with predictable plot points.

 

And it would have been better if Neville killed the fuckers who initiated it, instead of being some little emo pussy boy letting them live. That was most disappointing about it.

 

Read it. Hated it. I do believe that every single problem I had with it has been pointed out by above posters so 1/5.
