This one is alright, sometimes it is the whole cliché 'Harry gets sorted in Slytherin and befriends Malfoy', sometimes it is quite good
One big problem with this fic is, that Harry is ridiculous overpowered, but fortunately there is no 'Harry is the heir of the Founders/Merlin', at last not yet.
But it does avoid the whole retelling of the first book rather well, at least if you compare it to other Slytherin!Harry stories out there. The Philosopher's stone is still at Hogwarts, but not a major plot at the moment.

So, here is a nice but rather short Harry/Tracey fic set in forth year.
Since it isn't a post OotP fic, there's is no angsty Harry
It is with only three chapters to short to say in which direction it will go, but at the moment it makes for a nice read

I actually like Owl Treats quite a bit. It's... refreshing to see a Slytherin portrayed as a non-aristocrat or sadistic bitch. It hasn't gone very far yet, but I'm looking forward to see where the author takes this. If he would only drop his Naruto story....

I haven't looked at Owl Treats in a long while. I remember disliking something about it, but I can't quite remember what. Will have another look, it got updated anyway.

Edit: Ah yeah, it was the concept :p

Tracy feeling giddy because she made a friend (her first friend -- I never bought that 'no friends'/Outcast thing in general), as well as the 'can't show our friendship openly', leading to the contrived plan with Hedwig. Especially that. In my eyes, the hatred between Gryffindor and Slytherin is really not that great.

It doesn't make sense for it to be either -- children that grow up in the wizarding world know each other before they get sorted at Hogwarts, and work together after they leave. It's a rivalry, centred around Quidditch and House Points. That's all.

And the Dursley things (the bird, WTF?) fail hard as well.

    Then:

The Return of Harry James Potter » by Concealed Convict reviews
Harry has disappeared with Azkaban-escapee Sirius Black. After two years, and being declared innocent, Harry returns to Hogwarts for his sixth year. How will the school and his old friends react to his return? And what about the Triwizard Tournament?
    Rated: M - English - General - Chapters: 2 - Words: 11,879 - Reviews: 29 - Updated: 5-23-09 - Published: 5-22-09 - Harry P. & Fleur D.

That was a really nice surprise. I had tried reading another story from this author (the Harry/Daphne one), and that sucked. Massively. A cliché ridden piece of crap, a chore to read, and then I found this ... it's hard to believe it's the same author. This is leaps better, both idea and writing. In fact, if it had four or five more chapters, I'd think about putting it in For Review.

    The length so far is the main problem, I think -- whether or not the author has an actual plot in mind is still open; we had the plot bunny written out and some filler. What you can expect from the story is about summed up in this;

Hahaha. I mean WTF, that's not really Harry Potter, but I was laughing my ass off XD

I guess you could call it Harry Sirius-style ... since he spent two years with him, that's even somewhat believable. (Also, in case anyone's wondering from the summary, no Evil!Dumbledore or Harry-betrayed-by-all, thank god). This plus a real plot = Guilty Pleasure Winrar.

I think I've read this before, and it was quite good. Sometimes you don't want deep Harry, or complex plots, sometimes you just want the Potter equivalent of twinkies.

Plus, idiot Ron is always fun to read.

It borrows quite a bit from Jbern's Bungle in the Jungle. Jaguar/Panther animagus. Feline totem. Curse breaking.

Eh. It's alright. Not great, not good, but adequate.

    Wow.
Those things are most certainly not invented by Jbern. They are kind of the most cliched cliches after the magical trunk and Griphook.

Also, this quote is just too good to let pass.

I didn't like it. The only plot appears to be that Harry shows up to Hogwarts and is Awesome.

Er ... yes. Which is just about all it possibly could be, considering that it has exactly two chapters so far.

The most obvious idea would be that he wants to do something with the Tournament, and since we are not in forth but in sixth year, he's got quite a bit of room to be original there, too. But that's all conjecture until there's more.

I'm generally not a fan of moving the Tournament forward on a whim, I'll probably take a look at the story once the author has put out more chapters though.

On another note, old-crow has started a new story, An Inconvenient truth. Post-PoA, Amelia vs Fudge, too soon to judge.

I agree; this one is fun so far. It's not really trying hard to be realistic, and Harry as a sarcastic perv is always a good read. There could be some interesting fireworks when Fleur shows up.

This is a very well-written story which some of you may find interesting. The summary already says most of what it#s about, so I'm not going to elaborate on that. Although the author reads and writes slash, this story won't contain any. It does, however, feature a lot of Snape and Draco - and Draco is a part-veela.

I had some issues with the plot, they're in the spoiler tags. I copied them from the review I gave the story. In short: Harry often flaunts his skills like he does in bad Indie!Harry stories. I'm not a fan of that, but maybe you don't mind it. It's a nice way to pass some time, but it'never going to win the nobel prize of fanfiction.

There is, however, a number of things I personally wasn’t happy with, and they all concern the plot. I understand that it is your decision what to write, but maybe you might profit from hearing someone else’s opinion.

Why does Harry show his talents and knowledge to everyone? He’d have an advantage if he didn’t! I understand that he needs to demonstrate his strength in front of the Slytherins and Ravenclaws whom he wants to protect, but wouldn’t it have benefitted him more in the long run if he had kept quiet about it? My biggest problem, however, isn’t that he does show his abilities, but the way he shows them.

He often flaunts his skills, which reminds me of some very bad Independent!Harry fics I’ve read in the last few years. Why would he not just play along when Crouch puts him under the Imperius? It could be dangerous to show so much skill in front of a Death Eater! Worse, he even uses Legilimency to throw Crouch off, something which, as we know from canon, is not a skill many people have, least of all a Fourth Year who is supposed to be completely incompetent.

This brings me to my next point. Harry nonchalantly tells his Slytherin ‘friends’ about the prophecy concerning Neville and that Moody is in fact Crouch in disguise. The danger that they might let something slip is averted by the contract. That’s fine by me, but what if someone legilimises them? Oh, I forget: There is a deus ex machina plot device called ‘Oh, but we all know Occlumency!’ As I said before, Occlumency and Legilimency are not something that people just teach their kids because they don’t have anything else to do – it’s a skill few have and it is very difficult to acquire. They’re only Fourth Years!

Additionally, setting up meetings in the Chamber of Secrets is not an intelligent thing to do, but just another way to show off. But that’s just my two cents.

Go a little further in the story and he gets nookie from the living embodiment of his "magic".

Veela!Draco is just the beginning of the weird shit. You don't need 'shrooms to see the purple and pink elephants in this fic.

Did I fucking say Jbern created them? There are too many similarities in the stories for it to be a coincidence. Therefore the guy borrowed his ideas from Bungle. I don't give a fuck that he's using cliches. He's using unorginal ideas from another story that he doesn't even bother giving different aspects to. That's what irks me.

Definitely too soon to judge. Some of old-crow's other work starts out either like this - meeting with a Ministry person (I think Amelia might be in all, actually) or one of the (now) typical Indy!Harry openings and devolves into mostly fluff. I dare say my tastes have evolved since then so I'm skeptical on the future. However, it's as decent a start as his other pieces, though shares more than a few similarities to another of his works. Rating is M so I'm hoping that this will be a little stronger/darker than said other pieces. On alerts for now.

I read the summary, skipped it. Then I read this and immediately went back and opened it up in a tab. :p

Definitely an almost recommended. Harry's kind of a show-off, and often an annoying prick (not in a particularly amusing way either). But it's so rare to find such a happy Harry having fun and not angsting like a bitch. Cliches aplenty. It's like the author looked at how JKR made James into an asshat in Snape's school yard memory and decided to make a story about a Harry just like him.

Kinda fitting for the premise of the story, but there are frequent reminders of general asshattery. Still, it's nice to read about Harry in a good mood and so many of the other characters responding positively to him.

Yeah, so for once, Snape's rants about him are actually valid :p Though, he'd shit on Harry anyway, so might as well have an actual reason there ... also.

He has a threesome with Parvati and Padma in the new chapter.

That excuses just about anything. I'm still grinning like an idiot. Yeah, so I'm the typical fanboy at the moment. So sue me.

    Re: Inconvenient Truth

I noticed that as well. I actually had to laugh when I read the line "Thank you, Ms. Bones" in the chapter >_> Looking for more for now, although I'm still mightily pissed at old crow. I used to trust his reviews -- and therefore started to read this Harry/Tonks fic he declared as good ("Patronus Redux"), only to be unpleasantly surprised by shittiness (comments from the author in the middle of the story? Really?) I really have no idea wtf O-C was on there :/

Finally, in case someone is wondering at these two new fics that popped up in the Harry/Daphne and Harry/Bellatrix section, both from Kassien.

I read them. And you really can say it all with one sentence each.

There's Welcome Back Potter -- it's Earl of the North Mk II; complete with secret island and Harry and Bella married with children. And Runic Animagi, that's Harry with tattoos, piercing and smoking pot, while banging muggle chicks and Tonks (so far).

Not exactly recommended, but if someone wanted to know ...
