Wow, so Mike Smith started reviewing Goblet of Fire, and in the first chapter he catches such a huge blooper that I'm amazed no one here noticed before. Hell, I don't know why I let these things pass either; maybe I give Rowling too much of a pass. So, Frank Bryce, in the first chapter of GoF, can hear almost the entire conversation between Wormtail and Voldemort, and the faint noises of the fireplace cracking and Wormtail putting down the bottle he was feeding Voldemort with. And yet, a few paragraphs earlier, he was described as "very deaf".

Good Lord, why?! Frankly, this crosses the line from authorial/editorial incompetence into negligence.

And it's all downhill from there.

This is minor in terms of HP plotholes.

    Eh.

Well the thing that makes it so egregious is that it's right in the same chapter. It's as if she first wrote the plot, and then went back in and filed some random details for the character to "flesh him out". Or vice-versa.

Dude wtf: do you just not like posting in threads established for the given topic? First it was the pet peeves thread, now the plot-holes thread - which you've posted in >_>

Jesus Christ on a stick, take a chill pill.

I didn't remember that thread was there. If a mod wants to merge this with it, go ahead.

Well considering nobody noticed JK put Azkaban off the coast of Holland for years, I don't really see much point in worrying over it.

    It's in the North Sea.

When Sirius escaped he said that he called in on Harry before starting his journey north.

    Surrey is south of London.

Leaves very few places for it to be.

Could that not just be that he escaped, went to see Harry and then headed north to Hogwarts to find the rat?

If he was in the north, then went south to see Harry, it would hardly be 'a glimpse before starting his journey [his] north'. It would just be 'I came to see you well out of my way.'

So either Sirius is trying to play this very casual, it's exceptionally poorly phrased or Azkaban is located somewhere between Britain and the Netherlands.

To be honest, I'm not surprised that she would do something like this. Though I'm surprised that nobody's caught it before. Probably because everybody always skips over that chapter when they go to re-read.

I wonder what Taure has to say about this. ;)

I skipped over that chapter the first time, and never reread GoF.

Good find, but the first post is somewhat seizure inducing.

Meh, the North Sea is cold enough for Azkaban to be pretty much anywhere. Add in that we haven't actually seen the place and only have the Dementors' presence to work out its conditions and it could be any place from Iceland to Belgium without trouble.
