Good recommendation. The one thing that keeps me from submitting this fic in For Review at the moment is that the author's characterization of Harry is such that he's perhaps a little too detached for people to empathize with or feel for him.

I feel the same, I got through the second chapter before giving up. The main problem with this story (IMO) is that Harry comes off as desperate, which leads me to believe that maybe the author wishes that they had received more hugs as a child, like the author is trying to inject him/herself into the story.

An Inconvenient Truth » by old-crow
After the events in third year, the wizarding world grows darker. Fudge seems intent on spending more time covering up what’s happening than dealing with it. Could a stronger relationship between Harry and the Bones family change history?

A somewhat interesting plot, but the writing and execution is not quite upto the mark. It's readable enough, though I didn't really find it engrossing.

Someone put that up when it started. Might have been Sesc.

I've found it to be typical old-crow. Pretty decent quality, but dull. Nothing exciting happens, and it's all too happy. I stopped reading after chapter six or so. Don't see any reason to return to it.

Agreed, Old-Crow isn't a bad writer, just a really boring writer, all of his stories read the same, with the same basic cast of character's/OC's. The basic set up is that the Mary Sue! Bones become guardians for a brooding Harry, he is unsure how to act around a teenage girl, at some point Harry/Susan fall for each other, generallly Hannah plays a major role. He pretty much writes the same goddamn stories with minor things changed and puts a new title on it.

I did search the thread for any previous posting of the fic along with the library and deleted fics list. Nothing came up.

I think it was in the previous incarnation of this thread. I'm quite sure it was posted on this site at some point, at least.

And as others have said, if you've read another story from the author then you've read this one. More or less.

Old-Crow is just plain old boring. He can write sure, but that's it and it's just so boring and the dialogue always seems forced, uninteresting and lame. I tried reading some of his fics a couple of times and they always have the same effect on me.

Maybe (s)he should adopt a original story. It would owercome the problem very easily.

If this story is already posted on here...my bad.

I resisted reading this story until now because I've never been a Star Trek fan. I think the movie made last year sucks. However, procrastination from studying makes me do dumb things, so I read this story. It's written solidly, but I didn't feel much emotional attachment to the characters. While there are some recognizable names from the Star Trek series, I think that most of the main females are all OCs.

That said, I did enjoy following Harry around as he tried to learn about his past. Amnesia has never been more interesting. The highlight to me however, was how the history of the Wizarding World and the Star Trek universe intertwined. I'll admit up front that I recognize the name "Khan" from a Youtube video of some Star Trek guy yelling "Khaaaaaan!" and I have no clue who Colonel Green was, but I'm sure the author is a Trekkie who would never misportray that series.

In conclusion - this makes for a nice read due to how different it was. Or I could be simply in the mood to read a story that emphasized history since I watched a biography on Queen Victoria during dinner.

P.S. I should note that this is kind of a sequel to Harry Potter and the Four Founders by Darth Marrs.

    Not... a... Star Trek... fan?

    /me kills Kensington

Sorry, for a die hard Trekkie, this does not compute. Khan Noonien Singh was a major player in the fictional Eugenics Wars, while Colonel Green was basically Hitler in the 21st century. The guy screaming "KHAAAAAAAAAAN!" is James T. Kirk, as played by William Shatner, and not just "some Star Trek guy."

As for the fic itself, I will most assuredly check it out, given my love for the Trek series. Thanks for posting it.

Mehhh, I've never gotten in to that either. Have only watched one full Star Wars movie and never seen any Star Trek movies/entire seasons. Did watch a few episodes but mehh.

So, this fic was probably not for me:)

I don't know what to make of this story. One of the problems with it is that it's heavily riddled with spelling errors. Which I think is atrocious.

But the thing is, it had me hooked from the very beginning. After reading the first passage I could not stop until I finished reading it.

    *spoilers warning*

It is a complete story, centered on Voldemort. This Voldemort is very weird: throughout the story he poses as Harry's beloved half-brother. The setting is weird, what with blood wards around Harry's house giving Voldemort a new body.

Weird or not, Voldemort is portrayed as intelligent, methodical, not maniacal, and definitely evil. I loved it. In the beginning, he loses all his power and struggles to regain slivers of it. That is what the story is about: Voldemort gaining magical power and building new powerbase in a game against both Dumbledore and Malfoy. Yes, Malfoy is competent and a political shark.

The most notable bits are: Snape holding Dumbledore by the balls; Snape getting killed; Dumbledore getting totally trashed politically, slowly and methodically by Voldemort's machinations.

On the downside, there is the fact that Voldemort starts sexual life when his body is barely twelve and it is-- Oh, come on, is it even physically possible to do it at twelve? Well, the author never bats an eye.

Through the story I couldn't identify myself with Voldemort's character. I just couldn't get into his mind, and really: the author portrayed only Voldemort's actions, offering no judgement, never giving away his thoughts or schemes beforehand. Also, Voldemort's actions often confused me, even after finishing the story I cannot decide whether Voldemort is good or bad, consistent or inconsistent even, do I like or dislike him. Ultimately, it is unknown whether Voldemort grew to genuinely care (with capital "C") about anyone, or if people to him are simply assets, means to an end. The author did not say.

The story is swift-paced, so I'm not really given a chance to contemplate or dwell on such matters as abundant spelling errors, puerile sex, the inner turmoil of Voldemort's mind, consistency of his actions, or his cruelty. The plot is solid, with no loose ends. Voldemort's machinations are beautiful, logical, and terrifying. Dumbledore, Sirius, and Malfoy pose, well, serious challenge to Voldemort, so the conflict is also there. Sometimes I've got the impression the author was getting carried away ranting, not quite on Disobedience's scale, but close (e.g.: Dumbledore, McGonagall, the Americas). Then, Harry and Voldemort (for whatever reasons that evade me), in a joint effort of sainthood, strive to help as many people as possible. That simply does not compute in my head.

So, on the whole, the story is packed with action, coups, murders, manipulations, sex, with unhealthy amount of confusion and typos. Voldemort's character is a unique one, superbly portrayed. I think its place is in library in general, dark arts, or AU category. I rate it 5/5. The thing is, it is not Harry-centered, and in fact, Harry here is totally under Voldemort's manipulations; he thinks Voldemort is really his half-brother, looks up to him, and dotes on him. Even then, this Harry has strong character and is not completely overshadowed by his "brother". And the second point that could raise riot in the general populace here is, Voldemort acts as Vito Potter, and spends years in Hogwarts among children, seemingly enjoying the experience.

Alexeyy: I was nodding along as I read your comments. I think you've hit the nail on the head. It's one weird story and it's hard to comment on...

Sorry but I'd have to say that it isn't readable...

Shit like this: After a moment, she recalled her current circumstances, and looked over to see a silently sobbing teen. She got up, hugged the boy and acknowledged, "Thank you, Harry. Let's get you cleaned up."

    And this:

"As she closed the door, she was shocked to see Harry Potter sitting on the tile floor with his back against the ceramic, quietly sobbing!"

Pussy!Harry is so fucking annoying. He's crying about the night they SAVED Sirius & Buckbeak. WTF.

Ruined the story for me. And this is just the first chapter... I couldn't read any further then that.

It gets worse before I stopped as well, IIRC.

Might take a look at the fic about Voldemort being Harry's brother soon, will come back later with comments.

It's typically Old-Crow, but this in particular is hardly unique to him. Harry needs to be sad and broken, so that the girl (Susan) can come along and show him her love and make it all better. That's generic romance plot #1. My tolerance to stomach it depends entirely on the girl in question.

Hermione (get this shit out of here) << Ginny (meh, read those already, uninteresting) < Susan (will have a look) < Daphne (sticking with it). Lol.

And I dunno if it was I who linked that story, but I remember at least commenting on it, so it was in the Almost Recommended thread before.
