Why does this story strike me as being written without knowing where it was leading to?

That's been out for 2 years...might get spun into a proper prequel, but still. Although I'd forgotten that it (arguably) gives canon basis for the Sirius/Serious joke. Damn it.

Not really entertaining in the slightest. Kind of boring, really.

Thats been around for ages, I think someone posted it when it first came out. Whilst it was for charity, it was all pretty pointless.

Yeah, just read this for the first time, and honestly, what a piece of shit. If I saw that on here I'd laugh at it. Too short and as stated previously, entirely pointless.

To be fair to Rowling, she and everyone else who wrote stuff for the auction were given a limit (800ish words I think, or similar), so the length is hardly her fault.

Dunno, kind of silly and way to short and the battle felt a bit out of place but I still kind of liked it. I really enjoy reading about James and Sirius. But then, I knew this story for quite some time and I liked it even back then so I may be biased. But it wasn't horrible or anything, just nothing special.

Wasn't this the one where she said this is the only time she was going to write "a prequel" of sorts?

Yep, I remember that. 800 words is just too short to get much of a story going, and I doubt she gave even her usual level of consideration to the thing.

I'd still wouldn't mind if Rowling wrote a book of oneshots, though - just with an average length closer to 5,000 words or so. Forty of those, covering events in the past, present, and future (relative to the main canon).

I completely disagree. Try to write a story in 100 words. You can, it's easy. You just need to write cleanly, efficiently, and pack meaning where you can.

That said, writing a 800 word HP story is probably a bit challenging if you want to add any meaningful lore to the franchise.

That's more or less what I meant, though I wasn't too clear about it.

A very short bit of fanfiction can be compelling, but generally not in the way I would be looking for from Rowling. They tend to come out almost like unstructured poetry, but what I'd want from Rowling is...well, more akin to 'framework,' if you will.

I don't quite get why people say things like "Rowling obviously didn't give this much effort" and sound surprised about it, she has more money than God now from these damned books, anything she writes from now on is purely from a "because she feels like it" standpoint and nothing else.

It was written on the back of a post-card for charity, it's obviously not going to be very good. And yes, the news is very old. We had a long thread where everyone went "lol attention-whore" already thanks.
