Quite frankly, that would make the game impossible to balance. When you start adding 15 new units to each race, creating an environment that's abusable, especially at higher levels, becomes ridiculously difficult. For instance, placing the hydra back in tier 1.5 as opposed to tier 2 makes any sort of aggressive opening from Terran pointless due to the fact that they derive their early game advantage from facing zerglings as opposed to a ranged unit.

Giving mutalisks a morphed form would not fill a new unit role, it would create a redundancy that would make brood lords or corruptors even less useful than they already are. It's simpler to buff the two existing units, and mutalisks' names are irrelevant. Blizzard has changed names before (Warcraft III: gyrocopters into flying machines) and for the most part people ignore it.

Creating more units also makes it impossible for people to develop builds that properly counter the opponent. The reason you see so much stagnation in the builds at the moment is that people find a build that works and use it to death. In a few weeks or months when the game has been out for longer than a month, new builds will surface that make the older builds look like cheese. At high level play, people are playing for money, so the only reason they could have to innovate in terms of builds is to upset a game against a player like IdrA, who relies heavily on the macro powers of the zerg and not on innovative strategies like TheLittleOne.

And if you really want to fix zerg so much, buff roaches. They fill the anti-tank and anti-early-harass roles that zerg needs, they're just not viable at the moment.

Not true. As shown before with the transition between the original Starcraft and its expansion, Brood War (or with Warcraft III and its expansion), higher level players adapted to the new units and their new/overtaking roles (e.g., Corsair/Valkyrie) quite well. Remember, the Terrans can also quickly tech upwards for vehicles too, and then there's also the Firebat, Medic and the scrapped Marine Uranium Shell upgrade. If anything, forcing a Terran player to actually use a mix of units instead of constant Marines/Marauders versus an equally varied Zerg force would actually force people to use their brains for a change. They wouldn't lose their 'easy' opening, but simply force Terran players to be more careful instead of brazenly rushing in.

I do agree with the Hydralisk, though, that's one of the reasons why Blizzard kept moving them around from tier to tier during the alpha/beta phases.

Maybe, but the point is, is that the unit would be there for optional use. I've played in so many games where in the end, resources were running low and all Zerg players did was mass Zerglings, and Terran players Marines, with a few high tier units scattered between. If you couldn't afford a Brood Lord, but had enough to upgrade one of two of your Mutalisks into a cheaper/weaker version, it could mean the difference between a win and a loss. There are also strategies/game play options that can revolve around this:

"Do I go for the cheaper, easier to obtain Guardian for an immediate attack/defence, or the more expensive, time consuming to create Brood Lord for heavier siege/more damage? I have a force of Mutalisks hidden behind his base, do I go in for a quick strike, or upgrade a few of them with my valuable and scarce resource pile to do some lasting damage before they die?"

Unless the players involved are, frankly, as thick as shit and just spam one type of unit (seen in many matches with Zealots or Stalkers that are easily massacred by the right counter-unit), it would force people to mix and match accordingly, and actually use strategy in not sending their units into blindly attacking anything that moved.

    Note: Beta period. 'nuff said.

There are obvious exceptions, most notably at the 'pro'' level, but you have to remember that for every so called 'pro-gamer' out there, there are scores of simple, casual players out there like me. With more units taking on secondary/alternate roles, it would actually force players to develop new strategies/counter-strategies.

Agreed, although popping up behind him or near his resource gathering, raping them, and then them burrowing home again is quite fun.

As usual I agree with Poobah. Also, as one who plays zerg most of the time I have not had any trouble with zealot rushes for a long time now. The only kind of rush that I find hard to survive is zealot/marine and that's only because it's 2v1.

Also I'm not sure about higher levels of play, but even in the current Platinum league I doubt massing only zealots and stalkers could possibly win you the game unless your opponent just sits there and lets you get to over 100 food without attacking. Terran seige tanks are totally boss against that and zerg just needs to do some effective harass and unit positioning.

    Go play xbox.

The reason BW is such a great game is because you can truly compete in it. It really is an amazing game that has just the right amounts of units and it's very balanced. Starcraft is not supposed to be a game that you play for 30 minutes a day, not if you want to become good at it.

Right now the game has been out for a month and it is not the lack of units that is the problem, the problems is that the existing units has very limited uses. When one-base play get's nerfed we will see much longer games with much better unit comps.

Introducing 20 new units into SC2 would break the game. Sure, it would be awesome but the game would be as balanced as Age of Empires 2. I don't think you understand how much thought goes into balancing the game. A single unit can completely destroy a whole race, forcing them to come up with completely new buildorders. A single unit will break most of the maps, forcing new maps to be made and practiced on and new builds developed for those maps.

Stacraft 1v1 is not a casual game, it is not supposed to be a casual game and it would hurt from trying to become one. Starcraft two NEEDS to be PERFECTLY balanced or it will not be able to exist as an e-sport and that will mean that the game will die in two years.
This does not mean that casuals can't play the game, I am not exactly hardcore myself. There are a shitload of good RTS games for casuals though, I want a new pro-scene like the one we have in Broodwar.

Also, http://day9tv.blip.tv/ is the place to go if you want to learn more about the game. Day[9] is awesome, he does not comment games but rather tells you why the players are doing what they are doing etc. so that you can become better. He's an old WCG player, used to be A+ on ICCup so he knows what he's talking about.

Thanks for reposting -- That is an AMAZING game. I had a heck of a fun time watching that. So you were in there as a spectator Solomon? Awesome, didn't know you could do that.

Reaper Micro at the start was excellent -- I need to get better at that. I can do it, but not that well.

As to the rest of the discussion about gameplay getting old or stagnating, well, I don't have that issue. I'm not good enough (or serious enough) to really look up and use specific builds or strategies. I just read up on ideas and try to implement them however.

That's why I'm not in Platinum or Diamond, but it also means that for me it doesn't really get old because I don't see the game in builds/formulas on both sides.

Also agree that existing units could use some buffs or changes, but that adding a lot more units might just make it worse.

    Okay, it's done.

TSN found an island with gas and minerals. Thus, I'm boned. Gonna figure out how to post the replay in a bit.

Final time count: Four hours and nine minutes.

Lol. Watching that replay is fun. If I had attacked anyone, I might've won, but instead I figured that everyone had made major defenses like I had.

Even though TSN only had five cannons.

You do realise that if an opponent, specifically a Terran opponent, actually mixed the right counter-units, that mass would be ripped to shreds in about four seconds, right? And that's assuming that any player would even let you get close to Carriers without attacking you with an early Marine/Marauder combo. Or simply just Reaper raping your Probes/Pylons.

Heck, any smart opponent would rip into you before you could even get a single Void Ray up.

Phoenixes and Void Rays are expensive and time consuming to produce, even with Chrono Boost buffing the production facilities. Terrans can mass Vikings with a Reactor fairly quickly and pick 'em off one at a time.

Zerg players would just overwhelm you with either Zerglings or Mutalisks.

Also: I've decided to make a custom map that adds to the game play. It might FUBAR the balance, but it'd be a heck of a fun game to play. I personally want to see Goliaths/Missile Pod Battlecruisers fighting against Lurkers and Devourers. :)

Generally I just skip the first few minutes until he gets into the actual game. Once it gets to that point, it's really interesting to watch.
