God damn, that was pretty fucking cool. If Bollywood put out shit like that instead of absurd dance musicals, I'd be more inclined to watch the stuff.

Oh, and Robot Indian Elvis Terminators, while apt, leaves out "Jackie Chan" and "Tom Jones slash Wayne Newton" as descriptors.

I wonder if the individual robot who became the giant robot's penis when they combined felt embarrassed at all.

That's what made me think Jackie-Chan-in-Wayne-Newton's-body, but I didn't get the end with the mosquitoes. At. All. \o/

    It can not.

That is what half the population wants. No one is willing to work their mind around a plot. That is why Inception did not go hit here but 2012 was a major hit with all the CGI. The fact that whenever Bollywood decides to go for the sci-fi route it fucks everything up doesn't help either. About the dance musical, I know just one that doesn't have any of that shit, "A Wednesday", a pretty good movie too.

But anyways, I don't see the shitty dances removed anywhere in the future, this is like one of the most important parts of Bollywood movies. Directors have dances figured out before writing a plot. :facepalm

This. Then there's the fact that not many people in India are willing to invest money to produce a good Sci-Fi film, since the chance of it actually not sucking shit and having a good portion of the population watch is almost zero.
As for the random dance sequences, they will stick in Bollywood for a very long time. Indians, for whatever reason, love this shit and Bollywood knows it, so they keep. It's the same epidemic that's struck Disney. Why change something that makes a steady amount of money for something that may make the same money, though not for certain?

This isn't a Bollywood film, by the way. Bollywood refers to the Hindi film industry; Enthiran is a Tamil movie. This is relevant because South Indian films in general are often much crazier than even Bollywood. For example, the one movie with a guy riding a horse and sliding under a truck. Or the movie being discussed in this thread.

And supposedly Tamil cinema = Kollywood, Telugu cinema = Tollywood, Malayalam cinema = Mollywood ...this makes me facepalm hard. Bollywood was okay, but giving everyone their own Hollywood portmanteau is just dumb.

There are only a few good Indian movies. Those movies are generally the ones without any action. But regardless of anything, these are the staples of Indian movies:

    1) Romance. There is always a 'hero,' there is always a 'heroine.' I don't think I've seen one Indian movie, regardless of language, without romance.

    2) Dance. No way they're getting the singing out of the movies. Impossible. The film industry also doubles as the music industry in India. I don't think I've heard an Indian song that hasn't come from a movie. I'm racking my brains, and seriously, I haven't heard any that weren't from a movie.

    3) Fight scenes. Even romantic movies have to have some sort of fight scene in it, where the 'hero' is shown to be a big, manly man (who's actually of average height and weight) who can take on 20 guys without a sweat (and without any formal martial arts training). I can think of a couple of movies without a fight scene, actually, but almost every single movie I've seen has a fight scene. At least 90% of them, regardless of genre.

A movie plot is secondary to these staples. Without a romance storyline or random dances interjected into the movie, there will be riots in the streets. India will have to shut off it's internet. :S

o_O You guys have a better knowledge about this situation than I expected.

Little fact: The movie in question, when released had the house full for weeks in southern India. People were buying a and re-selling tickets for 10 times the price of what the cinema sold it for, and guess what, still demand > supply. Like approx 2k INR, roughly 90 USD per ticket. While originally price was 7-8 USD.

Also, Sree is spot on with the 3 points. The only two Bollywood movies I would rewatch are a few comedy ones, or "A Wednesday" (though it does have some plot holes).

I'd just like to point out that no self respecting Keralite ever refers to the Malayalam movie industry as Mollywood. When compared to other south Indian movies malayalam movies are a little less ridiculous, although they too have the problem of spontaneous dances and over the top fight scenes.

When compared with some of his(Rajnikanth) earlier works,I would say that Enthiran is actually quite mild.I quite vividly remember a scene in Chandramukhi in which he creates a miniature whirlwind by twirling his foot.
