Mid's orb looks like the Death star under construction in the background.

So, I kind of tuned in and out of the conversation in the server. Are you guys actually going to try to make Hogwarts? Because that would be awesome and I'd be willing to lend a hand.

If we are/were ever to attempt such a project we'd have to do it on a massive scale. Like from bedrock to sky limit big. Only way to do it justice.

Just... How much free time do you guys have?!

Btw. Is it possible to build a plane that'll actually fly?

Yeah, I intend to start doing it at least. And we even have our first reason to have secret rooms. D: Having her in the commons would just cause Snape to asplode on you. D:

    That's just dumb. D: Minecraft is not a Smurf/HP crossover. :<

Hogwarts in Minecraft? Screenshots would be nice when applicable, please. :)

So. In looking for ways to fix the dynamic map, I stumbled across Tectonicus. Its billed as a "deep map renderer." Its got a little better quality image and works fairly well. Runs like Google Maps...

It has built in support for signs you make in a certain format, so we can label shit and not lose it. (Click the below for a better view)

Also: Actual rendered tile for another map:

The only problem is that its not actually a part of our hey0 wrapper. :< This, in itself, is not an issue. The issue I am running it right now. I can add the hey0 plugin to update user locations in realtime, and run it from Cron once a day or something. It ran for close to 10 minutes when I looked back to the terminal window to check its progress.

670 tiles out of 24388 rendered. Someone on the MC forums said it took him half an hour to render his map. Others mention its a cock hungry resource whore.

So I'll put it to a vote. Are you fags willing to suffer lag every so often for what could be anywhere from 20 minutes to an hour or more, for utterly awesome maps?

The way we were discussing it was, grounds, forbidden forest, quidditch pitch, lake and of course Hogwarts itself. We've even got a map for the first floor and Lutris is an architect iirc.

So, that'll be done as soon as I actually get the game. >_>

The project itself would be beyond massive so every DLP Minecraft player lending a hand would help.

I'd say stick it sometime like noon to 1pm, take it offline for an hour and let it do it's thing if offline is anyfaster, otherwise, sure.

o.o At this point I'm not sure it would matter. It might take less time once the current render is done. But as it stands, we're at the four and a half hour mark, and have 9000 of 24388 tiles done.

For extremely crazy Hogwarts secret passages, we could use always-on fixed-destination stargates, so you could do stuff like go from one end of the school to another. I'm envisioning a 2 by 3 tunnel (basically the size of the actual portal), with a curtain of purple being at the end of the tunnel. The obsidian would be build into the walls/ceiling.

I feel like it wouldn't be complete without moving staircases, though. Perhaps we can use a custom MoveCraft type somehow. The source of MoveCraft would also have to be modified to allow for scheduled movements as well as rotation (just 90 degrees).

Vash put up a couple of screenshots of brick walls you can walk through, just like platform 9 3/4. Secret passages ho.

That's awesome, but portals would be more for a feeling of "wtf? magic". I think both could be used to great effect.

Heh. I just had a vision where spawn is King's Cross, and you have to take the Hogwarts Express (probably just a minecart and track) to get to the school.

In all honesty, relative to the amount of work going into building the school, it wouldn't be much more to do that.

    Edit:

Oh, and in regards to the map, I'm pretty sure it's the kind of thing you can't update very often. I believe that Coestar, of the Coe's Quest Lets Play series, uses the same program for his maps, and only updates it when he does some sort of big project that's likely to show up.

On both of these points, I have a solution: Block Door.

For moving stairs... It wouldn't really be moving in that way, but it could emulate it as best as is possible in minecraft, I think. Walk into a zone and it un-hides one stair case that points one way, and hides the same stairway on that level to the other side.

Also can be used with fences to make a drawbridge/gate type structure.

Its already on minecraft and I know it works, so... Since modifying Movecraft sounds way difficult, since it doesn't really have the smoothest of motions. Also, since turning it would cause major screw up at the 45 degree mark, chances it could fuck shit up are high.

And if you went the route of turning once, it'd be the same as block door...

    I am disappoint.

We might require a custom texture pack for making Hogwarts.

I don't know if it has been done yet but can creatures be modified?

Dementors shall roam at night, xD.
And giant Squid in the lake?
    Grawp in the forest.

Not to deter anyone, like it would, but this has been built befroe. Though, from the way everyone is talking, this will end up being shitloads more authentic, since he is basically a castle that is prettified, lacking many of the core magic systems that made Hogwarts Hogwarts.

Thought people could maybe also get some inspiration about size and maybe how to do some of the designs. There are thirteen videos in all.
