I was a little surprised this did not have a thread here already. Notice that I say slightly because on some level due to reasons I am unable to deduce I think the General DLP user might not like a game like this but whatever.

Though AOE III, in my opinion, as a standalone game is awesome, the Asian Dynasties expansion pack is the perfect cherry on the top. I have the Complete Edition and frequently play on ES Online under user "DarkDeoxys". Though most of the AOE fanbase did not like the mythological aspect of the Campaign story I still found it fun and have completed it a few times.

Anyone else here that plays it? Online? Username?

Reflecting upon it, a few days before Christmas they were selling original AOE III Complete edition for 50 cents a piece... I should probably have posted this thread at that time but I found out myself later on.

I liked it, but it certainly wasn't stand alone. It was just like all the others of that genre, including AoE 2, which was among my favorite games for years. If you want a game that's different, go for Civilizations, any of them. I think Civ 5 came out recently?

Played it, enjoyed it, forgot about it.

It's nothing compared to games like EUIII.

I used "standalone" in the context that if you look at the game individually without any expansions it is still pretty great.

And I tried civilizations but couldn't really get into it. It did not really interest me.

Personally, AOE is a game I will never forget. Sure after a while the playing against AI gets boring but online gameplay on the ES servers is highly addicting. If you haven't yet, TRY IT! I was wondering if you people still have the game we can host a game sometime? Any of you would be interested?

My brother likes it, even if it barely runs on his rig back home. I liked it well enough, but I wouldn't count it among my favorites.

Looks like a desktop version of Diplomacy?

EUIII is vastly superior to AoEIII due to several reasons but the main one that makes it shine in my eyes, is the sheer ease and simplicity one has when making modifications to the game (Custom nations, flags, history, events, kings, etc, etc.)

Honestly, OP, I prefer The Conquerors. I've finished all campaigns of AoE III including the sequels, but not once did I have the urge to play multiplayer.

Conquerors was the shit, man. It required an impossible combination of speed, precision and tactics to be truly good at. Used to drive me mad. And the template for pro matches became 1v1 arabia ... change that setting and all strategies were suddenly invalid.

    >Still remembers a lan 4v4 that lasted five and a half hours.
    >Lost in Conquerors memories

Conquerers and Age of Kings were both classic but I moved on when online servers for gaming were removed for them. Playing on LAN wasn't as fun, people just used to leave games when they started loose however it happens less on online ES servers because it would get tracked and put on their account.

Good AOE games take forever to finish. My longest running game was eight or nine hours. By the time we hit the seventh hour all the gold, stone, fish, and forage bushes were gone with wood rapidly following. He almost got me with his Elephants, but thank God for the cheepness of Pikemen and the market, bastard never knew what hit him:awesome

Still...was a close one, but it was my favorite match, and win, that I can remember.

I remember those types of games. I never played online, but I would play multi-hour LAN matches against my cousins and my brother.

As for AOE III, I have it and like it, though I don't play often. Come to think of it, I still haven't reinstalled it since I replaced my hard drive. Haven't played online either.

This man speaks truth. EU and Paradox's other historical grand strategy games are pure win. Well, HoI3 has had some major issues on release but then again it is an immensely complex game. Victoria II is brilliant and I can't wait for Crusader Kings II.

Magna Mundi the Game (based on the EUIII mod) is also looking brilliant.

Used to play it, used to be fun; CBA to buy the expansions, lost interest.

No point in going back online for it, now; everyone's moved on. (Same sort of situation for Command and Conquer 3, Red Alert 3 etc and Command and Conquer 4, but then again, no one plays Command and Conquer 4 anyway due to the shite factor).
