I recently got an xbox 360 and am now trying to stream AVI movies on it from either the PC or an external HD, but can't seem to get it working.

My PC connects with my xbox fine but it says unknown format when I try to play the files and it doesn't even recognize my external HD.

    Any advise?

Also: Is there a possibility to hook a mac up to a xbox to stream movies or play music or does it only work with windows?

Hmm. I have a playstation... but streaming from a PC to an Xbox should be much easier -- especially with Windows Media Player. What exactly have you tried so far in Windows to stream it?

To do most shit like that you have to DL certain updates from xbox LIVE. At least that's what was wrong when I was trying it.

For the external harddrive, format it with FAT32 file system. Can you play the AVI files on Windows Media Player? (You should be able to I know but sometimes they have modifications/compressions or something)

Firmware updates aren't mandatory on Xbox?

Probably when they come out but I recently got a new Xbox and had to update a few things manually.

I've found I have problems playing a number of video files if I'm not connectd to Live, that might be part of your problem.

I have successfully connected my Media Player so I can now browse through its contents over the xbox, playing music works. I downloaded a codec pack so now I can play AVI files with the player on the PC, but the xbox says its unable to read the format.

I have tried both with and without being connected to Live.

As for the HD I reformated it to FAT32 but it didnt make a difference. My xbox says I have nothing connected

Try manually sharing the items you want to watch, select 'everybody' with full permissions and then drop them back into the Windows Media Player Library.

    Didn't make a difference :(

I think the problem lies with the xbox. Is there a possibility to get something like an AVI codec pack for it?

Try TVersity. It's a streaming program that transcodes on the fly, so codecs and whatnot shouldn't be an issue. I used to use this with my PS3 when it didn't support AVI. The Xbox 360 is a supported device with this -- so it should pick it up automatically. You do need to forward some ports, I believe, I don't know if that's a challenge for you or not.

apparently it's just not meant to be...

I downloaded tversity, but it constantly gives me the error message unable to connect to server. I already made sure to allow it to bypass my firewall so that can't be the problem.

    Any ideas?

Did you port forward, or just use windows firewall? If the latter, you need to port forward to make sure it works perfectly.

Try Vuze. You can link up to your Xbox very easily.

    It's working
I downloaded vuze and that worked, though if its a large file it sometimes gets stuck for a few seconds, but I guess I gotta live with that.

    Thanks for all the help!
