    Hey all,

I'm looking for a story that I started reading a long time ago and haven't been able to find again in the last 2 weeks or so I've been looking. I don't remember too many details, but here is what I do know...

Harry inherited the Black Estate. I don't know if it was was pre-OotP or post, so Grimmauld Place may or may not have existed. There was a groundskeeper/Butler at this place who was really happy to have Harry inherit it, as he was a good person. The inheritance was supposed to go to Draco Malfoy and the Malfoys felt Harry cheated him out of it.

Lucius bribed or blackmailed the nice Butler/Groundskeeper guy to do something once he realized Harry was going to get the place (I think a mistress was involved, and she wasn't pureblood, and Harry wouldn't have minded the non-pure thing, etc.). I don't remember what, but I recall that he had wanted to work for Harry but was now going to have to be helping Lucius on the sly.

I also think it was well-written, but it's been so long I could be incorrect.

That's all I remember. Any ideas?

Something triggered my memory once again about this story. I never did manage to find it, so instead of making a new thread I figured I'd bump this old one instead. It's been well over a year so it's possible that someone new will see this and recognize the story, etc.

I don't recall much more than what I wrote above. I remember feeling pissed at Malfoy because the butler had been written very well and his relief at having someone who wasn't "dark" inherit the place was palpable, so when Malfoy forced him into his service like that it stuck with me.

I think it was one of those stories where Harry was "Lord Potter" or "Lord Black" half the time, but it's been so long I could have that wrong. I do recall him being slightly more mature than was standard at the time.

    *crosses fingers*

This sounds a lot like The Fifth Element by Bexis. This was a plot element somewhere in the last third or so, if I remember correctly. The whole thing is over 800k words long though, so you've got a long read ahead of you.

Though, if I may be so bold, Years of Rebellion is a far superior Post-OotP Indy!Harry fic with H/Hr featuring a well-crafted Black Estate, as well as a decent OC romance (actually now that I think on it, the superficial similarities are striking).

I only got about halfway through that due to terminal angst-induced rage overload, but that sort of annoying situation sounds exactly like something that would happen in that fic.

A couple of months back I made it to about the 2/3 mark before giving up for similar reasons. That and it was just too damn slow - a man can only be so patient.

I will back up the above posters in their belief that this sounds like something that Bexis would include, but I cannot know for sure. Besides, I could have sworn that the Black Estate arc was finished... no matter.

I think this happens right before the part where they rescue Ron...

This is definitely Fifth Element. And look - he's even updated recently*!

*77 chapters and still on year 6. What utter nonsense.

    Yep, Fifth Element indeed.

But while it may have been good in the beginning, I warn you of several Cliches.

    Super!Hermione.

Hermione isn't just 'book smart', she may as well be Einstein + Patton + Aphrodite. It's ridiculous.

Harry is a pussy when it comes to her. She makes all the decisions, bosses him around (in a 'cutesy' way, of course), solves all the problems and is a total and complete Harry-Whore. Her characterization is terrible. Terrible.

Super!Harry is still an angst-filled Rage-O-Holic. He's pissed and everyone knows it and has to suffer through it. His characterization is 'meh' at best on average.

Overly Wordy is a huge understatement. This fic is a monster. It's giganto-humongous. Be prepared to slog through a Texas Sized fanfic that moves at a hobbled donkey's pace.

The plot wanders TERRIBLY. And the author has a habit of adding in little (and not so little) plot threads and ideas, haring off down the path they create, and then randomly forgetting them for who-knows-how-long.

This dude has no idea what it's like to be a teenager or a young adult anymore. The levels of 'misunderstanding' and 'miscommunication' for the sake of romantic tension and romantic humor are mind bogglingly dumb. Really.

ItsAProcess is totally correct, actually. When I started thinking about this fic the only thing I could remember is that literally everything about it was terrible, even though it didn't feel like that while I was reading it. Bad characterizations, stupid angst, idiotic miscommunications for the sake of conflict, super powers that Harry can't use, blah blah blah. Oh, and wangsting over blood money. Ugh.

I remembered reading HP and the Fifth Element in the past and I didn't think that was it, but I just gave it another go to make sure. That's definitely not the story I was looking for though I can see why my description brings that one to mind.

I think the one I was looking for was fairly short, though I suppose that's moot now as it's been years and it could be long now. I do think though that about the only thing of interest that had happened so far was Harry getting the estate. He hadn't even arrived yet to look at it. My initial thought is that I didn't find the story via DLP way back when but I could be wrong on that.

I also glanced through Years of Rebellion and added it to my reading list to check out more thoroughly later.

Are you sure? That's pretty much the exact description of the Black Estate in the Fifth Element, with the Butler with the muggleborn mistress who's getting blackmailed by Lucius Malfoy who oversaw the estate before Harry inherited it. If there's a shorter story with those elements, I'd be tempted to say one stole the other's ideas.

I'm pretty sure, but you're right -- the other story I read was almost certainly a rip-off and therefore... well, screw it. Or maybe it was this one and after 2-3 years I've just taken the parts in my head that I liked and rationalized it out to being something else.

Either way this is the best I could have hoped for, and at least now I have some closure on the stupid fic, hah, thanks!
