I have a question for y'all:

Where, in cannon, does it actually say that Harry has a problem with Magical Transport. I don't remember it being that big of a deal. It's just starting to annoy me now when it's used in EVERY fanfic out there.

 

Off the top of my head:
Chamber of Secrests he fucked it up and did not like it. Book 4 he fell over from the port key, Book 5 at the end when he port keys to Dumbledore's office he falls over?

 

Right. All seems to be a bit overused though. First time through floo, obviously not gonna do it right. Book 4, first portkey, not gonna be an expert already. Book 5, he just lost his godfather, not gonna be focused on balance.

 

Also, they make an issue out of his Apparition ability, purely because he doesn't like the sensation it brings, despite him exhibiting decent control over Apparition in DH.

 

Yeah. I'm starting to just dislike fics that have this as a massive or even moderate factor in them, just on principle. Are there any out there that are good, and don't have that annoying thing in them?

 

Its been a thing in fanfic for the last...5 or 6 years. Its never mentioned in canon at all, its just an extrapolation from a few unfortunate incidences.

 

A cannon is any piece of artillery that uses gunpowder or other usually explosive-based propellants to launch a projectile.

In the context of a work of fiction, the term canon denotes the material accepted as "official", in a fictional universe's fan base.

 

The extrapolation should be destroyed. I really think people just use it now because they saw someone else use it, and thought 'hey, that seems kinda amusing. Why don't I not make up something of my own, and just use a crappy, not justified idea that isn't used in canon?'.

The thing is, that like so many ideas, if properly used it can work well. If its used a part of an overall theme of Harry not knowing things he should, or maybe of magic not working the way it should for him, then it can be quite good. If its just thrown in as a 'lets use this for a cheap laugh' or 'lets have folk make fun of Harry so the reader sympathises with him' then its not worth using.

As for why authors don't just make up something completely original of their own...because almost everything thats decent has already been written, at least badly and often quite well. There is so much hp fanfic out there, that just about every idea you can think up will have been used in some way to some extent with variable quality.

The Harry Potter described in canon is just too damn lazy to figure out what he's doing wrong. He never asked anyone for help. Nobody learns driving the moment they sit behind a wheel.

He did side along apparate Dumbledore from the cave to Hogsmead. He seems to be capable of magical transport just fine if he tries to.
