I'd like to find fics picking up after the sixth book that deal with Harry's horcrux hunt and war against Voldemort.

Additionally, I'd like for it to show both sides as competent, have good action and not end up with Harry winning due to a wand malfunction.

I'm not a very picky guy with pairing, but no slash. Mainly a Deathly Hallows done right fic.

 

You will not find a better re-imagining of DH than "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Do Over!" by va32h

Deadwoodpecker's Socks is a nice start on a book 7 AU, though abandoned (as far as I know). The departure point for the AU is that Draco succeeded in book 6 in killing Dumbledore.

 

I normally never miss a chance to tout that fic, but here I was thinking purely along the lines of the kinds of stories where an author is thinking, "DH is out and it sucked; what can we do to fix that?"

IIRC va32h (a female? can't recall) had a pretty rigid set of rules in the rewrite, such as canon pairings and the same deaths as in canon, so it was strictly controlled from going far afield in the AU department.

I can honestly say that aside from a few missteps, this fic would have made a better DH than the DH we got from Rowling.

To the OP: You can find Antosha's fics in a few places, but there are two versions of Back to the Garden. One is by that name and features a 'ship that is, shall we say, above and beyond canon. Antosha also wrote a strictly-canon-pairings version for PhoenixSong and/or SIYE, and though I haven't read it, I can't imagine it's as good or as smutty.

I'd forgotten that one. It was named something else at first, then renamed before being shelved. I remember it as on the way to grittiness bt that may be a whole other story.

Anyway, it sounds like I need to put "read Deadwoodpecker's stories" a little higher on my to-do list.

 

It was 'Sex In A Closet' I believe, or 'SIAC'.

It's a shame she seems to have stopped writing.

 

This Socks story really lacked details and a really crappy ending. I wouldn't call this a good DH replacement neither do I think the writer ever intended this to be one. It felt more like a long prologue to some post DH Harry/Ginny romance/drama.

are a tad muddy its what I could envision happening without the Deus Ex Machina that Rowling pulled.

Decent fic to pass the time with.

 

It just feels kind of unfair to show us awesome duels like the one between Voldemort and Dumbledore, to have a villain who you make out to be the most bad-ass thing since Samuel L Jackson and then not deliver an fight of epic proportions in the end.

I'm really looking forward to seeing how these fics pull that off.
The slash fic, what pairing was it? Cause I could probably stomach some as long as Harry doesn't end up with Snape or Malfoy.

Why on earth not? Perfect Situations is one of Jeco's better stories.

 

That's not saying much, because they all pretty much read the same. And I don't think it's very good, maybe when it was written back in '07 it might have been. It epitomizes one of the two major things I hate about H/D stories.

 

If D is for Draco then I'll follow Lord Anarchy's advice and stay away.
