Does anybody know of any decent stories that are appropriate for younger readers (under 13)?

Preferably completed, good spelling and grammar is also a plus. Everything else is pretty much irrelevant - it can be utter tripe, post-hogwarts canon-compliant whatever, as long as it's not both bad and boring.

Language and violence are ok, as are deeper themes, but no sex and no extreme gore.

I was considering Alexandra Quick, but I'm a bit iffy on it for reasons completely unrelated to it being OC-centric (politics is probably going to fly over a younger reader's head).

I checked my fav list and the only thing I could find that's age appropriate is this:

Albus Dumbledore and the Phoenix Feather

There is also a completed sequel.

@NS: Would be a good recommendation if the writing wasn't piss-poor.

@Shoulda: Disappearance might work, thanks. Only looking for HP fics, though.

Compared to what and on which scale? It's not GRR Martin but it's more than readable IMHO. The author was published with an original work a few years later.

Just give them Artemis Fowl and be done with it. >_>

I may have unreasonably high standards, but it's simply difficult to read the writing - it's awkward:

This is surprisingly difficult. I started looking through my favorites and most of them are M-rated and contain graphic violence and/or sex.

Anyway, what I managed to find:

    The Thief of Hogwarts
    Knowledge is Power
    The Summer of Change
    Hope
    The Power of the Press
    Vox Corporis
Harry Potter and the Quantum Leap
    Scion of Gryffindor
    Apprentice Potter
    On the Wings of Magic
    Rustlings in the Dark
Where in the World is Harry Potter? and both its sequels

As you can see this selection varies wildly. Some of those stories allude to sex and contain a lot of teasing, some of them include character deaths and so forth, but nothing explicit as far as I remember. Most 12-year-olds should be able to handle all of that, but some of it may go over their heads or may be too heavy. Depends on the kid, really. Judge for yourself and pass along what you think as appropriate.

Hope and On the Wings of Magic might work. Thanks.

My other story, Hogwarts Houses Divided, is actually more popular than Alexandra Quick, and probably is more appropriate for younger readers. I am pretty sure the HHD fan demographic skews younger than the AQ one.

(I don't think AQ is "inappropriate" for younger readers, but yes, I threw more political/historical references into it, plus it's a series.)

Where in the world isn't appropriate, or at least the sequels aren't, just glanced through them again, Mcgonnagall turns into a cat and gets all up on Harry :/

I was going to say that I don't like nonjon as a writer anyways, but then I remembered A Black Comedy and Two Heads are Better than One.

...of course, neither are appropriate for younger readers.

Didn't Vox Corporis have a pretty graphic sex scene in the earlier chapters?

Everyone will probably hate me for this, but Methods of Rationality is kid friendly through and through. No sex or language, and although there are certainly references that will go over a kid's head, the story is pretty accessible.

It's not a bad idea, though the main reason for reading it is in fact the intellectual shit that 11-year olds probably won't understand.

It might not be high-quality, but I enjoyed it at the time:

A Little More Time by Jess Pallas

Only has a K+ rating and there are several Oneshots connected to it. Basically, it's Teddy-Lupin-saves-his-parents.

(I happened to be on responding to a personal message and thought I'd post to make my post count a nice round number).

Here are some I'd recommend as age appropriate for younger readers. All are complete, except when marked otherwise:

The Best Seven Years by Blu Taiger. (Harry Potter/Calvin and Hobbes crossover)

Harry Potter and the Nightmares of Futures Past by S'TarKan (incomplete)

Harry Potter and the Dance of the Warrior by LordDragon73 (abandoned, but what's there is good for someone starting out reading fanfiction)

Harry and the Hobgoblins by Respitechristopher

Oh God Not Again! by Sarah1281

Grimm: A Fairy's Tale by Krahae (a bit dark, but very good writing)

Lily Potter and the Worst Holiday by bobsaqqara

    Luna's Hubby by Meteoricshipyards

    Cauterize by Lady Altair

The Substitute by BajaB (a bit dark)

The Sea King by Doghead Thirteen (Harry Potter/Deadliest Catch crossover FTW)

Unspeakable Things by Darth Marrs (incomplete, updates weekly, no sex so far)

A few of mine might be worth age appropriate for younger readers:

    India

The Life of Brian: A Super Harry Parody

    Yule Time

Also, pretty much everything by Inverarity. Also by Kokopelli (over on fanficauthors.net), particularly The Letters of Summer.

I could be wrong, but I remember Gabilian's two Year 7 AUs, A Serpent's Sacrifice and The Bottom of the Lake, as mostly 12-year-old friendly, and the writing's not great but it's competent.
