The original Skyrim thread's got so much shit (whether gameplay, lore, mod, or general chatter) in it that it's hard to sort out mod recommendations from the other stuff. So I thought it was about time to have a Skyrim mods masterlist for people to recommend mods, especially with the Creation Kit coming up just over the horizon.

We've already got a heap of really, really good mods even without the CK- and when that comes, things'll only get better. Yes, I know there's a thread for a mod wishlist. But there should probably be one for existing mods, so I went ahead and asked Jon if I could make this thread. He said to knock myself out.

In hindsight, hitting my head against the wall right then probably wasn't a good idea.

Anyway.

Here are a few of the Must Haves that I recommend to get us started!

Mod Name: Better Companions Guild
Author: Vincentlcarus
Mod Category: Menu Enchancements
Link: Skyrim Nexus
Summary: Okay, the point of this mod is to add some class to the Companions (Guild). I thought they were a little too rag-tag for a supposedly very successful and very well-known mercenary group so I decided to give them a face-lift and make them look more like an organized, well-funded Mercenary/Militia group.

Mod Name: Better Sorting
Author: Headbomb
Mod Category: Overhaul/Models/Textures
Link: Skyrim Nexus
Summary: Fairly awesome item sorting mod. Changes item names to make it so much easier. Silver/Iron Ingots become Ingots - <Material>. You can change potions from "Potion of <Stuffhere>" to "Potion of Fortify Destruction II", or just plain "Fortify Destruction II". Soul gems you've the option of "Soul Gem I/II" or Psuedo-Vanilla "Soul Gem - Common".

Mod Name: Categorized Favorites Menu
Author: favemenumodder
Mod Category: User Interfaces
Summary: Very essential for anybody who makes heavy use of the favourites menu. This mod basically allows you to sort your favourites menu into different categories - the default would be stuff like spells, weapons, armour, potions, but you can basically configure the .ini file to set up pretty much anything. This is the default, but you can configure the file (or download a preconfigured file from some other guy) to do things like this, this or this. It even has equip sets, which are basically multiple pieces of equipment/items tied to a single favorite item - although that feature's relatively new and a bit buggy atm.

Mod Name: Celtic Icons for SkyUI
Author: greg4net
Mod Category: Interface
Link: Skyrim Nexus
Summary: Must-have icon replacement for all SkyUI users. I recommended the borderless version.

Mod Name: Deadly Dragons
Author: 3jiou
Mod Category: Overhauls
Summary: Makes dragon fights more challenging and rewarding. Adds more buffs to dragons, increases their health pool, resistance, etc. Higher level dragons can use spells and even some shouts. Adds a bunch of types of dragons of varying difficulty, along with a few other small tweaks and additions. Most of the stuff is optional and provides several choices.

Mod Name: Elys' Uncapper
Author: Elys
Mod Category: Gameplay Effects
Link: Skyrim Nexus
Note: Requires SKSE
Summary:
Mod Name: Immersve HUD
Author: Gopher
Mod Category: User Interface
Link: Skyrim Nexus
Note: Optional features require Script Dragon
Summary: The aim of iHUD is to provide the immersive feel you get from having no HUD, whilst keeping the usefulness of having one. It takes the permanantly visible HUD elements such as compass and crosshair, and hides them when not needed. Hence the motto:

HUD when you need. HIDE when you don't.

Mod Name: less touchy lockpicking
Author: tmonet
Mod Category: Lockpicking mod
Summary: Increases the sweet spot on higher level locks by a substantial amount but not enough to trivialize them at lower levels of lockpicking.see screenshots. Blue is the part of the lock that will open.
Link: Nexus

Mod Name: Lost Art of the Blacksmith
Author: impulseve
Mod Category: Gameplay effects and changes
Summary: Adds every missing armor/weapon improvement recipe in the game to Skyrim. Can craft such weapons as Silver weapons, lockpicks, work axes, et cetera et cetera.
Link: Nexus

Mod Name: Nexus Mod Manager
Author: Nexus

Link: Nexus

Mod Name: Pluto's Improved Skyrim Experience (PISE)
Author: Plutoman101
Mod Category: Level Scaling
Summary: This mod, as its name indicates, aims at making Skyrim a more challenging and rewarding game without changing the feel of vanilla Skyrim. The changes made by this mod can be divided into different categories. This section deals with the changes in the main PISE.esp; for a list of changes in the optional .esps, see file list below. This and Better Magic seem equally decent, so it's more an issue of what you're looking for. I have found this to make higher level characters a touch overpowered, but overall it's worked the balancing issue pretty well.

But alas, it was a replacement for the Archmage's Robe and way too bright for my taste. So what did I do? As for the stats, it should have the same as the Shrouded Armor, just without enchantments.

Most of them are. I have them all installed through the Mod Manager.

The only ones that aren't are those texture mods that affect the same things- terrain, nature, that sort of thing.

Lutris, great job with the sorting and thread. You've done so well you're in official charge of it now =P Tell me if you want a different title, lol. And screw you for making me add like 20 mods to my list o_O

So is the OP going to be like a master list of all the best mods reccommended, or do you just look through all the posts to find the mods you want?

You might also have to change the posting format when the Steam workshop is running, depending on how popular it is. Hopefully you'll be able to link to a mod on the workshop somehow.

Most of the best mods I can think of off the top of my head have already been posted, but I'll look through my list later and see if I can find any that haven't been.

Thanks, Moridin. This is the best list of .ini tweaks that I know of. At the top, there is an option to jump to a section - go to the page 'Advanced Tweaking' (I couldn't link directly) to see the .ini tweaks.

My favourite is the uGridsToLoad one, but I reccommend you don't go above 7. I have a top of the line computer, and the FPS was still pretty bad outdoors on 9.

The Black Sacrament armor mod is tits on toast. It makes you feel like your the Listener, the head of a feared group of assassins, and not some random npc with better armor. And if your not the Listener then you just look awesome as all Hell anyway.

Also thanks Lutris for bringing JaySuS Swords to my attention, I love popping behind people and getting them with the Dragonsting dagger. I can't believe that the Creation Kit isn't even out yet and already there's shit like this.

Tytanis

I didn't see this one posted so I thought I'd throw it up here myself, its sort of comparable to mods like FOOK for Fallout New Vegas adding a ton of new gear, crafting recipes, spells and monsters. Most importantly of all however is the very simple fact that you can ride Saber Cats and Cave Bears as permanent mounts with this mod. I don't think I need to explain much further than that.

Eh, Tytanis is unpopular with a lot of people (myself included) because it adds heaps of stuff seemingly randomly, with no modularity at all. Huge portions are piles of crap, and you have to have them in your game if you want one thing from the mod.

Also, it's pretty broken. And instead of fixing his mod, the author just keeps adding things, which then further break things.

So yeah, Tytanis has some cool stuff, but be careful if you download it and make sure you know what it is you're getting. It's also possible the part you want is available elsewhere, as quite a few mods are integrated into Tytanis.

Definitely agree with Aekiel. If any of you are modders, you'll have seen some of what Dark0ne plans to do with the NMM in the modders forums, and it makes what we have now look very basic. So much better for installing mods than the old way.

This. He gets credit for the effort, but he's just haphazardly throwing shit in without regards for breaking things. And he changes so much stuff it breaks a massive amount of other mods.

Yeah no shit, can't believe we forgot to throw this in at the very start. I guess it's just assumed you'll do it this way.

At work, but I tihnk this is the one I'm thinking of.

Better Sorting

Latest version lets you not only sort shit, it renames it for you if you want. <RandomNPC's> Journal become Journal - <NPCname>, portions and magic get the same shit. Fortify <Stat> I, Fortify Stat II, Raise Dead I. Raise Dead II, etc. Sooooo much better than fucking shit vanilla sorting.

Yep I use that one as well. I'd not mentioned it because SkyUI supposedly was working on some sort of sorting plugin, but if it did anything I cbf to see it.

Yeah, SkyUI on its own is kind of meh.

That said, anyone else having problems with Inventory/Shops/Chests taking fuck-all forever to open under SkyUI? Skyrim actually stops responding for like 30 seconds.

Nope. Do you have any other inventory or interface mods? I know an early version of QD Inventory I was using caused a bad slowdown opening containers.

Mine ended up having the same problem as well. It turned out there wasn't enough memory so complicated things like opening doors and jiggling locks had the game lagging or frozen up for so long I could make myself dinner and be back in time for it to start working again.

If that doesn't work, I'd try re-downloading it from Nexus or seeing if it went into the right folder. Sometimes when I download multiple things at once with NMM they start pushing at eachother and/or forget to download important pieces.

Hope this helps!
