What happens to fiendfyre when left unchecked?

I have been following Master of death by Ryuugi Shi and his take on fiendfyre. It made me wonder about what would happen if fiendfyre was left unchecked in an area surrounded by water? Once the cursed flame consumes all the flamable material, would it fizzle out or not?

What say you, members of DLP?

So long as there is material to consume, I really don't seen Fiendfyre ever settling down without assistance from either the wizard that summoned it, or a number of them working together to contain it.

The flames go on until the summoner dies. Either that or there's still fiendyfire in the room of requirement.

I always assumed that it would continue raging until A) there's nothing left to burn, or B) someone forcibly puts it out.

    Edit:
I'm pretty sure the flames kept going after Crabbe kicked the bucket, else Malfoy and Goyle would not have needed saving.

I don't really like the idea of Fiendfyre being able to propagate infinitely.

Magic makes it perfectly possible, obviously, but it leads to a bit of a trap: a recklessly cast bit of Fiendfyre reaching the point where it could no longer be controlled by the wizards in the area. From there it could reach the point where it couldn't be contained by even a large group of wizards. It could obliterate an entire country or continent, Muggle and Wizarding; more than that, such a catastrophe would probably be inevitable over the long run.

If I were writing something where I had to narrow down its mechanics, I would set it up so that Fiendfyre's intensity and potential to expand depends somewhat on the wizard casting it. But no matter who cast it, I'd have it lose more and more of its "sentience," the larger it gets, until eventually it's just a huge, ordinary fire.

But then you have retards like the guy who set Fiendfyre off in the Room of Requirement (Crabe/Goyle?).
Who's to say dozens of others haven't done the same? Why is the world not completely burned if Fiendfyres go on -and grow- until opposed? And how can someone, or a group of wizards, put out a Fiendfyre that has been been raging for days or weeks and grown considerably? There is always something else to burn.

It's up to anyone to come up with his own explanation, since we have zero clues from canon.

I suppose that brings up the real question. What is the range of Fiendfyre's spreading effect? How far will it travel to obtain new burning material? Perhaps the power of the original caster would govern said property.

Huh. I like that. It's a neat magical disaster. It's something that's great to throw in in a by-the-way fashion if you do a little world building; a stretch of land where nothing grows because Fiendfyre ran unchecked there some hundred years ago. There also would be tales and stuff, and in the darkest nights, a flame can be seen burning still. Very atmospheric.

And that is a potential plot bunny for a story of wizard firefighters putting down uncontrolled Fiendfyre casted by some irresponsible people. Forget Aurors, these guys are real badasses of the Wizarding World.

That sounds interesting, especially if Fiendfyre's only a part of their job: a team of wizards whose job it is to contain out of control magic. They'd also handle the more innocuous bits of careless magic, like large masses of endlessly replicating objects. Or buildings charmed to fly (i.e. to be moved somewhere else) that got loose, and are on the verge of reaching Earth orbit.

It's called the Department of Magical Accidents and Catastrophes. And the team is part of the Accidental Magic Reversal Squad.

    :p

    It already exists in canon.

Department of Magical Accidents and Catastrophes.

Reading a story about that Department could be really interesting as long as it was less "deflate some kid's bitch of an Aunt" and more the putting out of fiendyfire and dealing with other dangerous shit. Surely they'd have to have some team of badasses dedicated to the really dangerous stuff, or perhaps that would just be the Auror's responsibility in the first place.

I liken the Aurors to the FBI and the DMAC to FEMA. Not much of an overlap of duties there.

Their official responsibilities are fairly distinct, but it seems to me that there would be some amount of overlap on account of a large number of magical catastrophes being caused by dark wizards (as opposed to FEMA mostly dealing with natural disasters).

The uplifting tale of how the brave, young starlet from the Department of Magical Accidents and Catastrophes is tragically injured stopping a rogue, killer bowler hat. And how despite his crippling injuries and severe brain damage, he recovers to rise to the highest office in the land, and face down his nemesis the Bowler Hat.

Of course, it all makes sense now. That's why he wore it at all times, so that nobody else would be afflicted by the fiendish Bowler Hat. Truly, Cornelius Fudge is a hero's hero.
