    Hi guys,

I'm sorry if this is in the wrong section, and ask that a Mod kindly move it if it is.

Anyway, I need to convert my massive, 805 page book from .doc to .html.

When I saved it as a webpage, the code-bloat was so horrendous as to boggle the mind.

I need something to convert the DOC to HTML that will strip it down to the utmost basic of HTML code: <p>, <h1+>, <br>, <b>, <i>, <u>, tables, links, images, and that's about it. I don't need style-sheets, I don't need anything fancy at all. The problem is that doing all this by hand will take a lot of time that I really don't have.

Ideally, I'd like freeware (NOT WAREZ!), but I'm willing to fork out a reasonable amout if necessary. Until I can convert my book to HTML, I can't put it on Kindle. And until I can get rid of all the code-bloat, I might as well not have converted it to HTML at all. So far, the only free programs I found on the net do essentially the same thing MS Word does, and they don't strip down the code to essentials.

Alternateively, if there is a jobless DLP member who can code HTML looking to make a little cash to convert it by hand perhaps we can work something out.

Weird option, but you could save a copy as .rtf, reopen it in Word and then convert that to .html. You might lose too much formatting, or it might work like a charm.

I spent a long time looking for an effective way to do this a while back for one of my college classes. One of the simplest ways I found is to to upload a .doc into something that lets you view the html code (the ff.net doc manager actually works pretty well). You can then copy the html back into word and do search/replace for most of the code that doesn't fit, converting <strong> to <b> and such.

Images and links will obviously not translate.

Doesn't Word allow you to save as 'HTML Filtered' or something. That should just give you the basics.

I tried that, actually. Still a lot of code-bloat. :(

Have you tried AbiWord? It's been a while since I used it, but I recall it worked pretty well on .doc files.
