It's more that EVERY topic over there is the Boy Who Lived topic over here. Definitely the occasional gem, but the place has no standards.

To contribute, Allora Gale, the guy behind Dauntless, has another story running for Code Geass I'm quite enjoying. It's not long enough to rec yet, but I'm anxious to see where it goes

I'm kinda disappointed that you guys didn't mention this story...

    NARUTO
Win some, lose some by obsidian dreamer

I actually posted that story up for review, but I don't think you guys got past the first chapter.

This is a great little light heart story, though it gets cliche a few chapters in.

Story is set up as a series of one shots, some are in the same series, others are original.

I would like to change my initial reviews of this story...

    Plot: 4/5
    Grammar: 2.5/5
    Total: 3/5

    Guilty, light hearted read.

EDIT: I'm an idiot. Added Genre.

BBC Sherlock / Harry Potter Xover - http://www.fanfiction.net/s/7771687/1/Symphony

I enjoyed reading this. Two problems with it though, (1) it's going to be slash apparently and (2) it's short. Also the author (esama) has a lot of stories so I have no idea if this one is on the to-update list or not. I think some of their stuff has been well received here but this is the only one of their stories that I can remember reading off the top of my head.

Anyway. Harry (around eighteen?) is on the run and manages to end up in 1980 near the house of one Sherringford Holmes, father of Mycroft (eight) and Sherlock (baby). It's a vaguely fluffy fic that appears to have some semblace of plot appearing as well. I found Mycroft amusing in a good way and Sherringford to be a genuinely interesting OC (even if I can't picture Holmes Sr. being much like this at all).

*shrug* Harry is determined to do something about the timeline and keeping things from going to hell but he's not sure what yet. At least he isn't ignoring the problem.

Almost Recommended indeed. If it was a bit longer and didn't have slash planned I might put it up in For Review.

Edit: Maybe I should have put this in the HP Almost Recommended thread, but since the "world" in question is that of Sherlock I auto-posted here. Dunno which would be more correct.

Esama writes good stories, but is primarily a slash author. Probably best to keep it here.

Yeah -- being slash by itself doesn't prevent a story from making it into the library, but it does make it a hell of a lot harder. No pun intended.

Unless this story gets updated to 40k+ words, obtains an interesting/active plot, and keeps the high quality without allowing slash to play too major a role... it'll stay here.

In other words, yeah. It'll stay here.

Esama has 5 fics in the library, 7 in the recycling bin, and 2 rejected.

One of the better pokemon stories out there. Though at the beginning the writing isn't good enough to consider this story for review, but as it goes it improves.

Pikachu and the Team Rocket(Jessie and James) are one of the redeeming qualities of the fic.

Wow... Pikachu is a megalomaniacal ham. It's all sorts of amazing. I'm rather glad I was bored enough to try this fic out.

It definitely doesn't qualify for the library (at least the first 6 chapters I've read), but it's fairly entertaining. Nice find.

I just finished re-watching Seasons 1&2 of Sherlock and, as usual after I've encountered media that I enjoy, I went in search of fanfiction. Many of these are crossovers with Harry Potter, because that at least sometimes allows for some version of a plot that isn't Holmes and Watson getting their sexy on.

Some of the following are closer to the "barely readable" end of the spectrum than the "almost good" end, so you are warned (though in the interest of not listing everything I read I did leave out some of the worst ones that I bookmarked anyway). ...And damn, I was expecting there to be a lot of slash fiction in this category, but it's like there's almost nothing else and it's really effing irritating.

I'm only gonna link to the stories that were either short but complete or WIP that were at least 10-15k long. There were a bunch of semi-promising starts to longer stories that petered out well before reaching the 10k marks.

Why Neville Really Hates Baker Street
Neville is dropping off a gift for a friend of his Gran's when he meets the world's only consulting detective. Sherlock is curious, and Neville simply wants to not have 'breaker of statute of secrecy' on his records.
The writing in this one was halfway decent but I found it to be pretty boring as nothing much happened. No real plot or anything.

The Case of the Unwelcome Owl
"So," said John, feeling out of his depth once again. "An owl." It was the same mild, politely curious tone of voice with which he had previously found himself uttering such things as: "So – three bags of frozen AB negative," and "So – a selection of human ears.""Goodness, John, with deductive prowess like that you'll soon be putting me in the shade," Sherlock said tartly. "Can't sneak anything past you, can we?"
I found this one to be somewhat amusing. Luna is Sherlock's cousin. I think it was complete. Still not worth a solid recommendation since, once again, nothing really happened in the fic.

A Study in Magic (Please note that this is NOT the one in the DLP library of the same name -- that one is MUCH better, and this one is crossed with the BBC show instead of the original works)
When Professor McGonagall went to visit Harry Watson, son of Mr. Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson, to deliver his Hogwarts letter, she certainly wasn't expecting to find the cause behind Harry Potter's disappearance. BBC Sherlock HP crossover AU
This story is weird and creepy as hell in some ways, since Watson has inexplicably become female while looking EXACTLY THE SAME as he does in the TV show. So everyone always thinks he's a man. His name is still John. He is married to Sherlock. It's REALLY WEIRD. It is a 140k+ story though, and I skimmed most of it. A few parts seemed halfway decent. Most of it was just... a weird mix of fluff and weirdness, and not at all the standard DLP fare. I wouldn't "recommend" it I suppose, but it's easily the longest fic I came across that might qualify as "barely readable."

You'll Never Be Alone In The Bone Orchard
John Watson meets Mycroft Holmes one day early. The world tilts slightly on its axis.
This one was actually pretty good. John meets Mycroft and starts working for him before he ever has a chance to meet Sherlock and things take a very different route. It's a complete one-shot, around 9k words.

    The Road Trip Series
Sherlock, John, and Lestrade on a road trip together, stuck in the same car for hours. The numbers are how long they have been on the road.
I actually found this to be somewhat funny. It's different at least. The last one wasn't as cool as the first couple though. It's not really a "proper fic" but if you're a fan of the characters and want to see them acting a bit stupid then have a go.

    Living Lore
London dreams of Sherlock Holmes and John Watson.
This is another complete and fairly short story. It's a bit of a mindscrew/horror too.

    Routine Procedure
A meeting at a broken-down red telephone box. Sherlock needs to make a call and Harry's just trying to get to work.
Just a short one-shot that's almost exactly what it says on the tin.

    Whispers in Corners
Everything started with a stumble - his new life in a new world as well as his surprisingly successful career as a medium. AUish HP x Sherlock, the BBC version not Victorian, crossover, warnings for eventual slash.
SLASH, sadly. I only put it here because (1) It's complete and (2) I liked what the author with Harry as "The Master of Death" enough that it outweighed my dislike of the completely unnecessary slash. Harry ends up in the "world" of Sherlock -- this is not the same universe/whatever as HP canon and the magical world doesn't exist. Harry is an adult. He uses the resurrection stone and works as a medium. It's reasonably cool. He meets Mycroft. It's still cool. He DATES Mycroft and it becomes less cool, though I suppose there's no reason why Mycroft himself can't be canonically gay. *shrug* At any rate, if you don't mind the slash too much I'd say it's worth a read.

A Brief Account of Life with Zombies
Sherlock thinks it's all a bit of a nuisance, John is having the time of his life, and Mycroft is Not Impressed. With anything, but mostly his minions' inability to provide a good cup of tea.
Another short (1k) one-shot that's almost exactly what it says on the tin.

    Harry Potter of Baker Street
Sherlock Holmes discovers family he never knew he had, and John Watson finds a child living in the cupboard. Crossover between BBC Sherlock and Harry Potter.
This one was actually, dare I say it, kind of cute. It was meant to be cute too, as someone has dropped off a four year old Harry with his long lost cousin Sherlock who has little idea what to do with him. There were some genuinely funny bits in it, but don't go into it expecting much of a plot -- Harry is four years old and remains so for the entirely of the 30k words or so that have been written. He does at least seem to act his age. Sherlock wants to rename him, John says no, and Sherlock often treats him like a dog (rewarding him with a cookie for staying somewhere when he is asked to, etc.). If you go into it expecting a humorous, fluffy, cute fic then you probably won't be too disappointed. If you go into it expecting something else you are out of luck.

    The Box
A teenage Sherlock wakes up in a hospital room with no memory of how he got there. Is it a conspiracy, or is he really ill?
This is... I don't know what this is. I think it was written by someone who works in a psychiatric hospital as a sort of "guidebook to how patients feel" or something. It features Sherlock, yes, but it's more like an essay in most places than it is a story. It's 100k words though and readable, but only if you feel like reading this sort of thing. As far as the quality of the actual story goes it's not that great, and I have no way of knowing if the other stuff about mental health is accurate or not, so YMMV. I skimmed more than read in many, many places.

Anyone know of any others? There were probably half a dozen more that I marked as "barely readable" in my mind, but they were either too short or just too plain poorly done in some way (there was one where a 12 year old Harry was acting as if he were 5, but otherwise the premise and writing was alright & another where Watson was dealing with perfectly legit PTSD brought on my the Baskerville ep when Sherlock dosed him with that drug, a cool fic idea, but it felt a little too angsty or OOC or something) to add to this particular list.

Oh, and I'll end with posting links to Ravenclaw Codex and Study in Magic -- the two Holmes / HP crossovers that actually made it into the DLP library, though both are crossovers with the original stories by Doyle. I prefer the second one to the first.

Using the filtered FFN search, I found one half-decent Naruto story.

    Naruto

    Ghost by Onmysignalunleashwords

"Her face. I remember her face." A boy trained to kill is brought into the light. Grey, different Naruto heavily stealth based and Root trained, but not in the traditional sense. How will he cope with that most dangerous of foes: emotion?

As the premise says, Naruto is trained by Root. What makes this different from other Root!Naruto stories is that he isn't put into a team and doesn't have a rivalry with Sasuke. This alone puts it a step ahead of other stories. I can't say anymore without ruining the story, but in essence, this is a Sai!Naruto (without the ink) learning to deal with people.

If you want to be pragmatic, Sai is renamed Naruto and made into the Kyuubi jinchuuriki. The character playing Naruto isn't Naruto, but we never actually learn his real name because he's always referred as "baka" and is related to Dan and isn't a Uzumaki or has massive chakra capacity like Naruto.

Pacing is moderately good. Character development is very rapid in some case, and extremely slow in another. Author made some grammatical errors here and there -- but it's not severe enough to close the tab. At 100k+ words, it's a decent time waster.

I did a cursory search, and nothing showed up with the author's name on this forum. I'm hesitant to recommend this story for review because it still has some rough parts. I'd have to reread this story to refresh my memory as to why, but I feel that this is the case... it's not up to standard, but is a very decent time waster.

If I were to seriously rate this, it'd be a 2.5-3 out of 5.

    Same Rating here.

Word of warning. The first chapter really rips off the trailer of the First Assassin's Creed. Im not even joking.

That said its an interesting AU if you can get past some of the dialogue reading as if it was robots speaking.

I swear there was one chapter with a dialogue sequence that reads as

    "This is logical."

    "Yes it is logical."
    "Logical logical. Logical."

    "Logical logical logical. Logical."

    AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH

But I do like the take on the Retrieval mission.

The beginning is a bit slow but otherwise I really enjoyed reading it. The idea behind the plot is interesting and the execution is solid. I especially liked the idea of the Baka as that is something we don´t see often, even in this kind of story. Naruto is massive OC but still interesting to read.

The plot follows Canon closely in the beginning but now we see some nice diversions.
And the last few chapters were probably the best time-skip I had ever the pleasure to read.

I would give it 3-3,5 out of 5..

While he does overuse the word "logical" a bit, the only time I can think of that happening was when Naruto and Shino were trying to out-Spock each other, and it was written more as humor than anything else.

That said, there are some major issues in terms of secondary characterization in the fic, but it's a decent read. 3/5, decent read but you know there are issues if you have to use an AN to justify a character

Here is one I'm on the fence about. I don't know how popular Animorphs are, and the religious nature of the story and the somewhat obvious (and admittedly, surprising) obvious manifestation of God makes the story stand out.

    Story here.

    Summary:
Somewhere in the Yeerk pool, you know someone is doing this.

    Animorphs, K+, English, Drama & Spiritual, chapters: 27, words: 47k+, favs: 156, follows: 178, updated: 7/4/12 published: 3/29/07

I'm not sure if this has already been recced, but it's a decent Naruto/Mikoto time travel story. There are aspects of it that I originally thought were promising, but as yet haven't led to anything I was hoping for. The romance starts off okay, but it has since taken a down turn, unfortunately. Something about the author's depiction of the main pairing is just... wooden and uninteresting. Furthermore, the romance is currently taking up too much room in the story, much to the detriment of the overall plot. The author claims the romance 'arc' is about to end, so I haven't given up hope yet.

This is basically an example of a good start which then just falls apart. A shame, but maybe the author will redeem this story still. He just needs to focus on progressing the plot into interesting new territory based on the tremendous butterfly effect Naruto must have already created.

I've been following it as well, Sechrima. It's a fairly decent read, but I agree about the downward turn since the romance with Mikoto took centre stage. She's been a very bland character so far.

I've seen it. Read quite a few chapters.

    Its... a little weird.

Its what you'd kind of expect from a sterotypical Christian proselytizing?

It also doesnt seem to go... anywhere.

I too have been following this story and enjoying it although it isn't anything too special. My biggest concern is that the author is going to have an aneurysm due to the Tobi = Obito thing and decide to scrap it, since I believe the timeline in this story is now incompatible with canon.

I dunno about that, especially since it was rather blindingly obvious Tobi was really Obito since Zombie!Madara showed up. I had money on it well before that (Kishimoto totally won me $1), but it was basically confirmed when Madara made his appearance.

Hopefully the author will have accounted for that in his initial planning. Probably hasn't, but I can dream.

Eh, canon's timeline is incompatible with canon.
