Why would the Prophet have to know beforehand? That's like assuming muggle papers automatically know to write obituaries for people, and what to put in them, without a family member having to call in and tell them. The Prophet would receive the info from the Ministry along with the news that he was executed, when, and why.

Newspapers have these things called sources... not everyone gets their information by sneaking around in insect form, even in the magical world.

Let us be clear: Firstly, it was Draco, not Lucius, who said this. Aside from the fact that Draco has proven himself to be an authority on absolutely nothing except running to daddy, and I don't know how many 14-year-old wizards spend time even trying to wrap their minds around human-giant sex, his comment was very clearly meant to be a sarcastic jibe to make his sycophants laugh at his 'comedic brilliance' and/or get a rise out of Harry.

You're taking a smarmy, offhand, comment and presenting it as a fact. I suppose Draco's insults against the Weasleys are also 'proof' that Ron was 'born in a bin'? Besides, it would have to have been one fucked up accident, since that's not even remotely how Skele-Gro works...

Basically, other than trying to turn Draco's idea of a joke into hard fact, everything keeps coming back to the rampant, fundamental, and infuriatingly willful stupidity of each and every person in the Wizarding World.

I guess if that's the universal counter argument, all I can do is throw my hands up and heave an irritated sigh.

    1. With Hagrid's death the Buckbeak accident is going to be avoided. Because I don't see Grubby-Plank showing Hippogryphs to third years.
    2. Maybe Hermione will suffer the complete disillusionment in authority figures, and convinced Harry to secretly work to undermine the Ministry and Fudge in particular. Maybe Harry will finally use his fame to get Fudge fired.
    3. Sirius can escape using the broom; he doesn't need. Buckbeak.
    4. No Blast-Ended Screwts in the maze.
    5. Gwarp is probably going to be killed as a 'runt'.
    6. Acromantulas will get out of control earlier, and the Ministry forced to do something, especially if Pureblood student is eaten.

    If Hagrid dies?

    1. Shows-us-how-unimportant-Hagrid-really-was-option: assuming that someone else told Hagrid or hinted) that Harry should see the dragons, nothing earth-shattering happens. It was probably Dumbledore, anyway.

    2. The boring option: Crouch leads Harry to the dragons, everything goes as planned.

    3. The fun option: Harry doesn't see the dragons before the Task. Crouch forgets to rectify that. Horntail eats Harry.

edit:take all this with a grain of salt, I'm probably a little drunk. Fucking friends, man. Fucking Friday night. Fucking beer. I had to juice it to drink it.Ugh.

Fudge wouldn't give a fuck, it doesn't affect public opinion as Hagrid is 'only' a giant.

Nothing would change much, Hagrid doesn't have a huge impact. There would be much angst from Harry though. Good thing he wasn't killed.

I honestly don't see Albus Dumbledore being too amused with Rubeus Hagrid receiving such a fate after Albus has it confirmed that Hagrid is innocent. Harry would cry, and so would a few others, but they would move on.

It's Albus Dumbledore I would be worried about. I mean, Hagrid's expulsion was one thing, because he most definitely did smuggle an Acromantula into the school. He was guilty as hell of that and furthermore, even though Albus wasn't headmaster then, I doubt even he could or would have protected Hagrid too much. But this? A fate worst than death to a man who it turns out was innocent?

At minimum, the Daily Prophet will be running the story of an innocent man given the kiss. Sure, Fudge can lean on them a bit, but I don't think that would have too much reach when weighed against a distraught and enraged Dumbledore. Especially if he doesn't bother to hide his feelings too effectively.

That's what would be most affected. Dumbledore's relationship with the Ministry. And this time, its Fudge who will look catastrophically stupid and crazy, vs Dumbledore claiming Voldemort was back.

If Sirius escapes again, I imagine that the only way Dementors will be any where near Hogwarts is over Albus Dumbledore's dead body. Along with about a couple dozen Aurors stupid enough to make the attempt.
Ever see the movie Dude, Where's My Car?

End scene. "I wanna go on that ride:D"
