As the title says, my old monitor died, and being a total cheapskate that I am, I bought a new, chap one. Acer V225HQLAbd 21.5" Full HD. Unfortunately, the gamma settings are totally fucked up.

    Here, look.

Terrible. Everything's way too white. Games look like utter shit too. And that's with Control Panel -> Display -> Calibrate colors to the LOWEST gamma available already. I also tried to use my NVIDIA settings to lower the gamma, but that didn't really work out. Also downloaded this PowerStrip program or something, but it worked only for my desktop background, pretty much. Any games/videos still look like this. The monitor settings themselves don't have gamma at all, only brightness and contrast.

    Any suggestions?

Actually, it might be not a gamma issue. That program indeed lowered the gamma, but it's still too... artificially bright. Like, the bottom of the screen is forcing some light/brightness on top of all the color settings. >_< I have no idea what's going on.

Edit: Of course you don't see the gamma I do when I use an adjuster. Anyways, it gets darker, but it's still weirdly artificially bright.

If the backlighting is uneven and bleeds through there is nothing you can really do about it.

Also, changing brightness and gamma does work for the desktop background and browsing the internet, but not at ALL for games, which is weird.

When you screen shot, you're taking a digital picture. I can't perceive your gamma failures, due to the fact that its an external (user) conflict... Me thinks your problem is that you bought a cheap piece of shit, and you just need to fork out for something better, or if the one you have now is under warranty, return it and get a new one.

Unless I've misunderstood everything, I think whatever that one person said about your back lighting is your best answer. You got something cheap (probably refurbished or damaged during shipping) and the guts are fucked.

Some screens will appear brighter than usual, because of how they render the color. If its not a malfunction of the screen (mostly cause I'm too stoned to picture in my mind how your screen could be messed up). It is new, so maybe it was a problem with your old screen. DLP looks different on all of my computers due to the type of screens I use/have.

Indeed, when you take a screenshot, you're taking a picture of what the computer is trying to display, not what your monitor is showing you. You could try to take a picture of the monitor... but that usually ends badly. My monitor, a loaner from a friend because my Samsung died), also died on the 9th.

Yes, for those who can do the math, it was the day after my birthday. :|

And, I replaced it (using my video card budget - FUUUUUUCK) with an Asus PA238Q: Your screenshot looks great on it. ;)

My even older replacement monitor is a fishbowl full of shit, a pre-plug'n'play CRT with a puny screen, and I can tell you that its problem was that it was way too dark. While using that monitor, I can see the burning house at the top of the forum, but no hooded man, even with brightness dialed (yes, literal dials) all the way to the max.

Long story short, about all I could do to try and compensate for the darkness was use the gamma/brightness controls for the video card to adjust the output.

If your video card is an ATI/AMD, you can download the Catalyst Control Center and install it. Nvidia probably has an equivalent, as well.

Yeah, I figured that screenshot thing out a bit later. Anyways, the monitor was utter shit, so I got a refund. The one I bought immediately after (Asus) is working much better ;D

    Thanks for the help, guys.
