No, I don't. I also don't store my mail online, I store them locally. And I wouldn't use gmail if it was the last service on earth.

@Cheddar: The owncloud thing is something you set up on your machine as well, it's basically a different kind of server. So it's as safe as you make it.

Anyway, I got the SSH up and running in our LAN; took about 15 minutes because I played with the options. Here's some additional stuff that's important:

    • You'll need to add freeSSHd to your firewall-exceptions, so it's allowed to have in and out-going connections.

    • When creating a user for freeSSHd (Settings --> Users --> Add...), you'll need to pick "Password stored ..." in the dropdown box, if you want the typical user/pw login

    • Accordingly, you'll need to check "Password" in Dokan when connecting

    • More secure is the public/private key + pw combination, but it requires additional work. If you want that, pick "Public key (SSH only)" when creating a user, and read this pdf for how to get your keys. The public key is for the server, the private key is for the client (and what you add in Dokan, as a file)

    • When creating a user, be sure to check "User can use: SFTP", or Dokan won't work

    • And finally, in the SFTP tab of freeSSHd, you can pick which folder you want to access with Dokan (e.g. My Documents)

Apart from that, installing and setting it up is really straight-forward. Edit:

^ That's how it looks like at the client. The drive M is the folder on your server that you selected in freeSSHd.

And what service do you use for your email? A third party service, or do you also host your own mail server? Even then, the box hosting the server is probably a VPS, which is also in control of a third-party.

So unless you have your own server running 24x7 which you use for email, you are trusting some other party at some level. :p

For important stuff, the mail server of my uni institute, which is in the room next to the computer lab, behind a locked security door, and run by our admin, who I know personally. Everything clear? :D

(That aside, the original point was that I don't trust them to store important files -- if it's just about privacy, I could always encrypt my mails).

Haha. That's pretty awesome. Anyway, yeah, I've heard stories about people losing their Google accounts overnight without any good reason at all. Personally, I just diversify with multiple Google accounts, and use Thunderbird to keep a backup.

As far as free e-mail goes that isn't associated with an Business/University... I heard somewhere, sometime, that LavaBit was "secure." Dunno if true. I use Gmail, since I've been using since it came out (had a beta account), and my old school account is run by Gmail too (even if moderated by my school?). I don't really trust it but I guess it's a given that anything e-mailed is supposed to be private, as that's somewhat the point of mail, so I feel like it wouldn't be a potential legal issue if someone got hold of it?

As opposed to a cloud server where you just... put something there, and it's just there? I've always heard that once you put something on the internet it's there forever and impossible to get it deleted properly.

So I'm looking forward to trying to set-up this SSH thing or the Cloud Server. Thanks again all, especially for all the instructions and stuff.

    :awesome
