So, I think it's time we set up our own TVTropes page. There's an arseload of misinformation being spread around about us. Calling us vicious and wicked and jerks and assholes.

OBVIOUSLY they're understating things, we need to correct that error!

So, I figured I'd put this out there as a sort of a Mini Contest. How would you describe DLP on TVTropes?

The best summary gets plastered onto a new-born TVTropes page about DLP, then I link said page for review by the forum in general.

Oi. We used to have one. But it fell by the wayside and was taken down. I think it could be lots of fun!

I'd have to ignore everyone on the internet. That would be a pain in the ass.

 

Hm. I had at one point (a few years ago now) added DLP to a list of Harry Potter fiction sites on TV Tropes. I tried to make it sound as neutral as possible, avoiding that "hey guyz come here it's so dark and edgy" crap. Looks like it's gone now though.

I personally don't think we need to advertise at this point, but I don't really care.

There's a mention of DLP in the Single Fandom Archives listings under Harry Potter. (We probably are somewhat misplaced there, given the community interest and WBA stories in other fandoms such as Dresden, Naruto, etc.)

 

Yeah, but I've been lurking as "guest" for much longer. I was merely pointing out that it seems people think rape, torture and incest is all that's going on here. And I haven't been raped or tortured yet. :awesome

We are mentioned on TV Tropes in a Methods of Rationality thread quite often; and I quote, "DLP was just a jerk-fest of jackassery."

While I think the current entry on DLP is lacking, having a thread to 'come up with a description' is not an idea I am fond of. Also, while we might have had a page there before, it seems awfully presumptuous to make one again. Including DLP in a few other lists of archives and FF forums with a modified description reflecting other fandoms and other aspects of the forum, though, that should be done, IMO. There is no reason not to update it, at least.

 

Oh, that's the one. Though I don't remember there being other fandoms like Adventure Time or Doctor Who listed there. They must've added to it or merged it with another page since then. Or I'm just remembering it wrong. That's definitely what I wrote though.

Like I said, I aimed for a middle ground between "DARK, DARK LIKE MY SOUL" and "we're just misunderstood guys, srsly," but I think I ended up just making it sound boring. I don't know. It was a while ago, probably late at night and I just remember thinking it odd that DLP wasn't on the list for Harry Potter sites. Someone's more than free to change it if they feel it ought to be.

As for whether it's misplaced, well, the amount of fics from other fandoms actually produced here seems to be a lot less compared to the amount of HP fics written. Plus we've got Potter right in the name.

Good publicity or bad publicity is better than indifference. I don't think DLP should aim to correct some people’s assumptions. The community itself is strong enough.

 

That would be me, along with ChuckDaTruck. It was one of those parody things that just escalated quickly and before we knew it things had really gotten out of hand.

 

TV Tropes has eighty thousand words on Methods of Rationality, if you count all the subpages, which is longer than Philosopher's Stone. Plus separate pages on his Three Worlds Collide novella and his community, Less Wrong, which is apparently 'dedicated to rationality'.

There's even a page for good ol' Eliezer himself, which squeals over the fact that he graces them with his presence. Hell, he even had a couple of entries on his pages changed after he complained in the comments (specifically, he told them to stop calling Harry in MoR a self-insert and whined about Did Not Do The Research).

Considering that the Tropers are sycophants and LW has a hate-boner for us the size of Tasmania, I really doubt we'll be able to make any headway here.

 

(The author also has us on Google alerts, so we should expect some lulz as he drops in in another sad attempt to troll.)

He was kind enough to get us a shout-out at The Atlantic, though, which I still find incredibly amusing.
