Or X(squared) and Y(squared) if Nintendo wanted to be weird about it.

I'm just hoping they start over and do another set of R/B remakes in the new style.

    *does not like Gen3.

I'd prefer if they stuck to the canon they've built so far (FRLG/Emerald -3 years-> HGSS/DPPt -around 4 years-> BW -2 years-> BW2), rather than rebooting again. If XY is around 2 years after BW2, that means approximately nine years have passed since FRLG and Emerald: Red is nineteen, Brendan and May are nineteen, and instead of a Ruby/Sapphire Remake, we instead get a sequel to R/S/E.

Can you imagine how interesting that could be? Like BW2 was for BW, the sequel series in Gen VI would feature a new protagonist (perhaps Brendan/May's brother, who would now be around ten) and we explore how much Hoenn has changed. We get new Gyms and an rearrangement of the Gym Leader sequence. May, the old protagonist of R/S/E, is the new Champion.

We can then have the option of travelling to Kanto, battle a nineteen year-old Blue, perhaps track down Lorelei, Agatha, Steven, and Wallace, all of whom missing E4/Champion members, and battle them. And at the end of your journey, you can battle your "famous sibling": Brendan. Only upon beating your brother are you allowed to face a nineteen year-old Red and embrace legendary glory.

Imagine the possibilities, the new storylines you could explore in Hoenn, instead of rehashing the same storyline again.

An electric mouse, a plant thing, a fire lizard and a squirrel... Really?

What's so wrong with these starters? All pokemon look kinda stupid. Doesn't mean they aren't badass/awesome

The fire starter looks cool, but Vulpix already is a fire fox pokemon.

I wish they'd made the fox a different type.

Speaking of starter types, gamesradar has been doing some speculation based on the trailer.

And the pokemon twitter released the phonetic spelling of the new legendaries:

I don't know why, but I like Froakie the most out of the starters so far. I don't even care what he evolves into, I'm choosing him my first time playing through.

I sort of like the idea of the second trio of strengths weaknesses (dark/fighting/psychic) in addition to the standard grass/fire/water.

The only snag is that Dark isn't just strong against Psychic, it's immune. Though Nintendo seems to be rather bold with how they're doing things this gen, so maybe (hopefully) they're going for it. It might just be a way to nerf Fennekin's evos though, and that would suck.

If Fennekin does end up Fire/Psychic, it'll make fights with Bug types more interesting as well. You won't be able to just go "Eat Flamethrower LOL" when they can lay down double damage. Bugs have always gotten the short end of the stick, but if 2 starters are vulnerable to them it would really change things up.

Or maybe they're all monotypes and Nintendo is trolling us hard. I'd be okay with that too.

I hope we get away from the dragon types. I liked the rarity of dragon types like the original Dragonite-evo-line, and the concept of Salamence even if I thought he looked extremely stupid and that Shellgon was far and away the stupidest pokemon ever.

But with Gen IV/V, Dragon types are just all too common and it's getting ridiculous. Interesting? Let's just make it a dragon.

Kingdra, Altaria, Latios/Latias, Reshiram, Zekrom, Kyuurem, Dialga, Palkia, Druddigon and Giratina were all "dragon" types that I really disliked.

There have been a lot of cool dragon types that I liked. Haxorus, Hydreigon, Garchomp, and Flygon are all pokemon that I think are very cool, but the whole mystique of the dragon type is really getting sullied by this abundance of dragon types. Back in Gen 1/2, dragons were so rare that some "dragons" didn't even get the classification. Lance used a Charizard, a Gyarados, an Aerodactyl, and three dragonites. Now he couldn't fit the first 3 in with how many dragon types there are.

It feels like you used to work for your dragon type, buying a dratini from the game corner and leveling it up with fucking WRAP, the only damaging move it had before level 30. Now you need a box for holding all the dragon types the game throws at you.

Whatever, rant off, still really looking forward to this game.

I think that the second line of elemental advantages is a cool idea - if only to make strategy more important; otherwise the game is just about switching in the pokemon with the correct elemtanl advantage.

Psychic-Fighting-Dark isn't the only other elemental triangle though. There's:

    Flying-Fighting-Ice
    Poison-Grass-Ground

    Etc

They never mentioned Emerald in the vid!! I am disappoint!
I'm also totally digging the fire type. And I'm hoping gen 6 will have pkmn with different combinations. I want to see a Bug dragon! or a ice electric!

We need more power so they can finally give us a game that will let us fucking go to all the regions.

Not that you'd need a power bump if you kept it sprite-based, but still.

I still, by the way, think that Nintendo should totally make a hand-held Pokemon MMO on the 3DS that opens up the whole world as we've seen it thus far. It would allow you to go everywhere, fight everyone, get all the badges, participate in multiple Region Leagues, introduce a new World League composed solely of NPCs and players who have beaten all of the Elite 4 Leagues, and allow you to pick your starter region (and thus, your starter Pokemon), but you can earn the starters of other regions through quests and by filling out your Pokedex.

Think of it this way: You boot the game up. You go to character creation. Boy, girl, name, ect. It creates an online Pokemon profile that everyone can see. Total number of Pokemon caught, Pokedex data, battles won, battles lost, ect. You can also customize your appearance, but your options are limited in that area (for now). Then you're prompted to choose your region. You do, and your associated Pokemon Professor gives you the rundown on how things are.

You're given a basic opening tutorial, allowed to choose a starter, and given a Pokedex. As you fill out the Pokedex to certain thresholds, you are 'rewarded' with certain items and Pokemon, such as gaining a Master Ball for every full Region and generation that's filled out, or being gifted with a semi-rare Pokemon like Scyther for, say, fifty new Pokemon from that region.

Certain Pokemon would also be elevated outside of the normal listings to make things fair. For instance, Mew, and other Event Pokemon, would be considered "Special Pokemon," and not be required for the game to give you full completion. Acquiring Mew, Shaymin, and other similar Pokemon through an in-game tourney or Rare Event would give you the classic "101%" completion for that area or Pokemon set.

As you travel, new areas are opened up for exploration. As your hit certain milestones in your own accomplishments, you unlock new base skins to use for your appearance, to dress up your character. Catching twenty Flying types and evolving ten of them nets you the Bird Trainer base skin, for instance, while other "specialist" skins could be unlocked by accomplishing similar things with Ghost, Psychic, Ice, or Water types. Other, more advanced skins require meeting multiple objectives, or having multiple skins unlocked beforehand (for instance, the Ace Trainer Skin is only rewarded upon acquiring five other specialist skins and also beating a Regional League), while others might require specific events to take place (you can only use the Dragon Trainer Skin if you pass the Dragon Trial at the Dragon Shrine). Once you have a skin, you can modify it further by tweaking it's colors and adding purchased accessories, like sunglasses, hats, vests, and scarves. This allows you to customize and earn your appearance, starting from a Rookie Trainer skin all the way up to a Pokemon Master skin, and gives everyone the opportunity to differentiate themselves from each other in an MMO setting.

So you can control and change your appearance, which evolves as your trainer grows and becomes more skilled. So how does that work?

Each Region has it's own League, it's own Elite, and it's own Gym Leaders. In order to challenge the Elite, you need to defeat the Gym Leaders. They and the gym trainers who assist them all have Pokemon sets that are leveled to the highest level Pokemon in your team, so things remain fair. Upon defeating each of them and earning their badges, you can challenge the Region Elite, and their reigning Champion. Defeat the Champion, and you gain that Region's Elite Badge, which 'replaces' the Gym Badges of that Region, essentially acting as a superbadge.

Collect every Elite Badge, and you unlock access to the World League, which is comprised solely of other Players and NPC Champions, and contains Pokemon Stadium style challenges and PvP battles, with special engagement rules and unique prizes, like ultra-rare items, shiny Pokemon, and event related objects up for gabs, like Aeon Tickets.

To make things even more interesting, once you reach the top, you're allowed to "Prestige." You keep your global rank, but willingly forefit all of your Pokemon and Items, which are banked and kept in storage. This allows you to start again once your League Rankings are maxed out, allowing you to pick new Starters and fight through the game making new choices. Once certain thresholds are reached, portions of your Bank are unsealed, giving you access to TMs, HMs, Items, and Pokemon at or below certain levels relative to the one you have reached. Pokemon, TMs, HMs, and other items would likely be Region-locked in addition to being only available at certain levels. The only way to unseal your Bank entirely is to re-earn all of the Elite Badges, and re-gain admittance into the World League.

Upon doing so, you gain a Star on your Trainer Profile, and unlock special items, skins, and accessories, both for yourself and for your Pokemon. You can Prestige as many times as you like, acquiring full sets of Starters and earning additional Stars and premiere accessories and items as you go, some of which might unlock access to new areas, such as an overhauled and expanded Sevii Islands, or a premiere Pokemon Spa with unique encounters and special services like changing a Pokemon's Nature or allowing you to train new Abilities onto them to replace their old ones.

The Global League would be multi-connective, but also partially hands off. Two people don't have to be in the same place at the same time to battle, although there would be areas dedicated to that. Instead, while competing, you leave "echos" of yourself in those tourneys, which linger after you yourself leave, and can challenge others in your absence using your team roster and the tactics the game records you as using most frequently. These "Ghosts" can be rated by others, and it's even possible to face yourself should you frequent the same brackets repeatedly.

There would also be a form of "raiding" a-la Darksouls, where you can run into other players while outside the World League areas. However, players can toggle this on and off at any time under Options, and there would be further limitations to prevent deliberate griefing, such as disallowing PvP field confrontations in Gyms and Towns except in designated buildings and areas, and tiering players up into different brackets based on both the average level of their overall team, and the level of the strongest Pokemon on their team, to prevent more powerful players from griefing weaker ones, and to mitigate exploits in that system, such as running a team of five level 10 Pokemon and one level 100 (average Pokemon level would be 25, which would put them in the 25-30 bracket, but because the game also checks the level of your strongest Pokemon, it sees you with a single level 100, and bumps you up to the strongest bracket as a result).

There could even be global and regional 'events,' such as Swarming Pokemon or randomized Team [WHATEVER] Activity, giving players changing goals and an evolving world to participate in. It could even be possible to arrange for Raid-style encounters against "unchained" Legendaries or nonrandom surges of criminal activity, playing out an overarching global story in addition to the player's on person one.

I case you can't tell, I've thought about this a lot.

Dark and grass? I love them both, but together? That's just asking for a bug type to annihilate you and feast upon your innards.

They already tried the secondary trio of types in Gen 4. There's almost no way to do it without overpowering one of the three.

Basically this. It's possible to make them balanced against each other, but then again, that only matters against certain specific Ace Trainers that field starters and your rival. And your rival always picks the one you're weak against anyway. At least one of them is going to be overpowered as fuck against the rest of the planet, and that sort of takes the fun out of it.

The Kung-Fu Chicken cosplaying as Ken was bad enough. We don't need a Third Tier Water Water-Psychic Starter gangraping six gyms by itself, no matter how awesome it sounds on paper. It would be fun for maybe the first three, but after that, you're just cruise-controlling through the game, and that's boring.
