I personally don't like Metallica and do enjoy a accasional rap song but only by Lil Whyte, same with country I only listen to Trace Adkins but lord don't defend the rap genre because the majority of it is degrading to women thats what you want/expect when you turn on rap and as for country thats how I indulge my southern side

    Sage Francis is an exception

No...he just applauds real music instead of some guy who rhymes into a microphone with a beat behind him. There's nothing wrong with listening to actual music instead of emofests, rap, pop, and shit like that.

And Metallica may be the metal version of Red Hot Chili Peppers, but both are wildly popular bands. Literally everyone that I know knows of both Metallica and the Red Hot Chili Peppers, while I know a bunch of people who don't know Ludacris from the next rapper. The thing about rap is that it's all the same. There isn't much you can do that's different, and overall it's not very appealing. With real music, you can create an original riff in under a minute, get a good beat with the drums and bass, punch out some lyrics, and there you go: instant original song in under 45 minutes.

You do realize of course, that the 50 cent album probably sold more money then the last Metallica and Red Hot Chilli albums combined? Anyone who bases their opinions of music based on sales is an idiot, period. And honestly, if you think rap is all the same, then you haven't listened to enough rap. I myself don't listen to that much rock beyond the bands that I enjoy, because most of them sound to similar to a million other bands. Rappers have different style, the way they spit metaphors, flow patterns, wordplay, flow speed, how they ride the beat, etc. It's much more then saying something to a beat.

I never said anything about sales. I just said that they're wildly popular and easily recognizable. And just for a pointer, it's not very convincing to use the word "probably" or use inferences in a debate. Hard facts are much more appealing, and will help to make your points more credible.

Then I'd have to say that we are going to have to disagree. You are correct, I don't listen to rap. However, we're both making the same points about each style of music. You say all that about rappers, when rock bands have different levels of distortion on the guitars, different volumes on the bass, different rhythms, different styles of guitar-playing/drumming, and different voices. Like, can you honestly say that Pearl Jam sounds anything like Van Halen? Or that the Chili Peppers sound anything like Metallica?

There are so many more variables that can be changed, tweaked and perfected in rock music than in rap simply because there are more instruments being played. That's the point that I was trying to make. There is much more chance to being original in rock music that rap because of the aforementioned aspects of the music.

    No.

And I'm not going to be bothered to look up the stats, but I know for a fact that 50 cent's album sold more copies then both the Red Hot Chilli Peppers and Metallica's latest albums, whether it sold more then both combined, I don't know. At anyrate, the fact is that just because certain music is more popular doesn't make it better. I have found more original rap then I have rock. *shrugs* We'll just agree to disagree.

That may or may not be true but what you didn't take into consderation was that Stadium Arcadium made it to number 1 in 27 out of the 31 countries it was released in. 3 of the others it made no.2 and in Brazil it made no. 8.

I have nothing against rap itself, I don't like it but I don't care as long as I don't have to listen to it. What I do dislike about it is the concept of rap stars. Just listen to the lyrics and you'll see what I mean. After a while, when a rapper becomes rich and famous, he has nothing to rap about.

Here is an exerpt from one of 50 cent's songs:

Come on, you're rich, famous and you don't have the problems you grew up with. Get over it and stop bitching!

Also, every other line in some of his songs has "nigga" in it! Fucking hell man, any white man who called a black guy that would get his ass kicked and thrown in jail for years. What kind of example is he setting to people if he calls people that? That its alright to call people niggas and get away with it? I don't see him in jail so it must be ok.

You ever notice that when people start discussing their personal preferences in something as inconsequential as musical tastes, that the debates inevitably become vitriolic and quite heated?

Rap sucks. We all know this. Some may not have yet come to that realization, but they are merely lost souls to be gently guided back onto the path. Of course, rap is insanely popular in the US. This is not surprising in any way, shape, or form. ;P

I believe George Carlin said it best and I shall paraphrase:

"When anything I regularly believe becomes accepted by the American people, I begin to question my judgement."

When did this forum become a debate board for what music is good and what isnt?

ah and moody? your little cut and past article. Firstly:

The glaring hypocracy of this statement is enough to make me disregard any and all of what this idiot says. Too much focus on the lyrics but you cant stand it not to hear them?

    FAIL!

... been to a concert lately? Ive been and every band I listen to plays their own instruments.

    Next!

Yeah. 95% of all rap sucks. I will also agree to LET you say the same thing when you are born BEFORE 1985, you twat. Half the fucking music you listen to wouldnt exist if it werent for rap and people like Run DMC, Ice Cube, NWA, Snoop Dog, the Beastie Boys, ect.

If you arent old enough to know who Goodie Mob is, dont say rap sucks. You dont have the right till you LISTEN to rap. Chamerillionaire, fifty cent, and eminem Are Not! I repeat, NOT Rap. They are shit licking idiots.

Awesome rant from that guy. and I mostly agree with him especially about rap. But what he says about current music being complete shit screamo and emo bullshit is what I don't agree with. Chili Peppers are great they have been around for what 10-15 years now? Very few bands last that long anymore. And, although they aren't as good, Godsmack is good, current, music.

    I'm way late but..

Bullshit, "emo" is a distant, distant relative of punk. They're related through watered-down Grunge [see: Blink 182].

Ahh, WTF is all this talk about EMOs. There ARE other types of music besides rock and what-not. And for all those headbangers-are-all-emos, I listen to Psy Trance. So stuff your wise-ass bs...

I'm going to say this about the music most people through into their fictions. The music groups don't even exist for an average of 5 years at the time of Order of the Phoenix. Why would Harry have a CD of a group that doesn't yet exist is beyond me and in my oppinion is just an author trying to both get more words in their stories and declare their alligence in music.

Every kind of music suck in comparatione to the classical music. Who remembers some pop/rock/metal/etc. song from 8 years ago? Nobody. But everybody remembers the Fourth Movement in Beethoven's Symphony No. 9 - and it had been 182 years since the premier (and don't dare you call it emo!). The same is with the song/music writers - nobody remembers some emo writer/singer - but almost everybody with at least some intelligence knows Beethoven, Vivaldi, Bach, Mozart, Rossini, Wagner, Verdi or Tchaikovsky.

The quoted I disagree of. A lot of people like to put down Rap and Hip-Hop. Some might claim that just because I'm African-American (or just quite frankly black) that I enjoy the music. I disagree. Not going against the whole quote... but its just that I disagree with that part.

Fic has disappeared from ff.net, and there's no sign of it with google. Given that people were calling for it to be trash-binned in 2006, I think it's safe to delete it.

I was happy that there was no H/G in it but other than that ray or sunshine the story itself was less than I hoped for. I love Hard Rock but the music was a big disappointment, especially with Draco. Really. He's an 'awesome' guy.
