Any good stories/scenes where Sirius is shown as insane as he would have to be after escaping Azkaban? I'm curious because everyone always seems to write things that simply aren't possible. He spent 13 years in Azkaban, give or take. I don't care if it's part of a story as long as you give me the chapter where he comes in.
    Thank you!

The only reason he was able to escape was because he wasn't insane. That was, like, the whole plot point - he was able to use the fact of his own innocence to keep himself sane, access his animagus form (which allowed him to stay sane even more), plan, etc. When Fudge came around on a tour he was calm and collected. It wasn't a happy thought, so the Dementors couldn't take it from him, but it was still enough to resist them.

What was that entirely AU series? Where Voldemort had taken over Azkaban, Sirius was alive but hostage - everyone thought him long dead - and actually becomes the main character of the series? The Chosen One, or something?

It had Harry and company as a mini gang of pranksters. Haven't thought about that in years--name's on the tip of my tongue.

I can't recall if the series was ever finished.

The Promises Trilogy by Robin4. It was in fact finished, and I'd list it as one of the better Harry Potter fics... Probably one of my all time favorites, as a matter of fact.

Who actually went insane because of azkaban. Bellatrix was already fucked to begin with. Barty jr, while seemingly insane, was more eccentric in my opinion and he got shit done. If he was insane would he have really been able to deceive and fulfill his task. Those are the only two names I can think of that are possibly insane. All the death eaters that were rescued by Voldemort seemed mentally sound from what I recall.

Barty was in there for less than a year before his mother took his place and died there. As for who else went insane. The answer is everybody. If you got an extended sentence in Azkaban it meant eventual insanity and death, unless you had a helpful Dark Lord to break you out.

The reason we don't hear about them is because they are all plot irrelevant due to being cuckoo for coco puffs.

I plan to use a Sirius that isn't at all suitable to taking care of Harry even if he was allowed. He'd be too fucked up to manage properly.

He might not have been insane, but he must have been, well, changed.
Dementors absorb happy thoughts. While Sirius did not lose his sense of self since Pettigrew and the Potters betrayal wern't happy thoughts, he went 13 YEARS without happyness.

There's one great oneshot were Sirius forgets about his godson, Harry, because he's a happy thought and there is no happyness in Askaban.

I find the characteryzation of Sirius as an, admittely disturbed, happy go lucky prankster to be faulty, since the Dementors should have taken his positive notions (for Sirius friends and pranks) away. Since he was a dog all the time, it woudn't be unexpected for him to pick up more animalistic traits.
