You know the scenes which really shake you up. So which are your favorite?

    Well mine:

In Within These Walls the Puppet master is about to rape Ron when Lee begs the Puppet master and instead they agree on 50 whips for Lee. The Puppet Master whips Lee 50 times and keeps going. And Ron shouts to him the 50 whips are over. The Puppet master says he didn't count and he will start over again. Ron begs the Puppet Master to rape him instead. But Lee even though he thinks he will die takes another 50 whips.

In Harry Potter and the Death Hallows Do Over Harry confronts Snape and the bets the shit out of him and then Snape reveals to him that he is a horcrux. And Harry walks with Snape to his death. And then meets Sirius in the Limbo. The entire scene was just so moving.

In Harry Potter and the Years of Rebellion where Harry confronts Dumbledore about the Greater Good.
Another one from it is when Harry and Ron get into a fight over Heather. When Harry says she was the only girl who liked him for who he is and not because he was the boy who lived.

There aren't many, if any, emotionally powerful scenes in fanfiction because the quality of fanfiction is low. However, I felt a touching scene appeared in Conloadh's Song by enembee. Harry goes to confront Voldemort and battles some temporal ghouls. After the fight, he realizes that Voldemort's ghouls wore him out and that he was going to die. Harry gives a little spiel before bravely accepting his death and facing Voldemort. This is as close to emotional as fanfiction gets.

Cauterize is the only thing that immediately jumped to mind for me.

Most emotional? Not really many particularly moving scenes in fanfiction, but the scene at the end of Alexandra Quick and the Deathly Regiment got to me.
When Darla jumps back into the Lands Beyond after Alex saved her.
I was still reeling from that one for most Stars Above, especially all the scenes with Mary.

One scene in a Pokemon fic always got to me, years back. Basically, there was fifty chapters and four hundred thousand words of build-up with relationships and the like, done quite well for, you know, a Pokemon fic. Then one of the main three characters died, and the reaction after the fact was written from the POV of the girl he was in love with, and who was in love with him, but, you know, they were teenagers and didn't admit it et cetera. The writer wrote a stream of consciousness of the girl's thoughts, and in that one paragraph called back every major milestone and fight of the relationship, summarised the horrible tragedy of the story itself, and then kicked the reader in the fucking stomach with the girl realising that, duh, they were in love and should've stopped being children and admitted it. And yeah it was a bit overly angsty and teenage girl-y, but fuck it, it stuck with me.

If you count actually writing the scenes, I totally had an emotional reaction while writing Incorruptible. Like, I've had parts and certain deaths planned from years before ever writing the first chapter of the story, and part of the draw was getting to those points just to fuck with the readers, but you totally have to tap into previous emotional reactions to write a scene that you hope makes the readers punch walls and then sob into tubs of double chocolate chip chocolate ice cream eaten with a spoon made of chocolate. And so when the words come, all of a sudden you're in the scene a lot more than any other to make it a more visceral, realistic, reaction, and so when you're done you sit back and go, "Woah." I did that to myself four times. It was fun. And I got one or two reviews saying they felt like shit and cried and stuff after those chapters, so, you know, fist pump.

    Man, you're awesome.

You're like the Lord Voldemort of fanfic authors, you're always talking about yourself in third person, but instead of talking about MattSilver, you talk about Incorruptible.

The most emotional scene I ever read was the last scene of Lightning on the Wave's Septology. The feeling of profound relief was unbelievable. "Thank god that shit is over."

There were various moments from LotW's series that I genuinely found emotionally affecting, but the one moment that most sticks in my mind is from a story by Celebony, in a story called Recnac Transfaerso. The story itself I rather suspect I'd loathe if I read it these days - I came across it much earlier in my fanfiction career, and although I seem to recall it being reasonably well written, it's the kind of story that would be more likely to wind up in the Worst Summaries thread than anywhere else [in summary: Harry is angsty and thinks everyone hates him. He randomly decides to cure his new Muggle neighbours terminal cancer by absorbing it himself. This leads to many life lessons, and him coming to realise that people do love him, and he does deserve to live, and yada yada yada. Oh, and naturally having a terminal tumour does awesome things to his magic.]

Anyway, towards the end of the story, Harry dies, not long after defeating Voldemort (by tricking him into absorbing the cancer himself...) So far, so meh, but there's a scene where the inhabitants of Hogwarts pay tribute to him by the Great Lake. I remember being really moved by it, although I wouldn't want to go back to it now. Best left viewed through rose-tinted glasses, I suspect.

    On another note...

    What. The. Fuck.

Very surprised no one's mentioned this - but a bunch of scenes in Dwitty's The King's Adviser.

Ron's death - and the scenes thereafter - Harry asking the Chudley Cannons to do a fly over, the whole segment to the funeral and thereafter

Very heart-wrenching - I actually teared up. It read very real and raw.

I forget the writer, the name of the story, and even the overarching plot of the thing.

It was one of those first Indy!Harry fics that Power of Time spawned, back in 2004. All I remember was that there was such an epic build up to the climax, and then a stormy dark battle on the grounds of Hogwarts at the end. Some magical being, like a demigod, was involved, and Harry (nearly destroyed, bloody, beaten, and being rained upon) falls to his knees.

The demigod-creature offers him her hand and says "Why are you kneeling in the mud on this day of destiny, Mr Potter?"

    And Harry gets up.

    Fuckin' awesome.

Shit, if anyone else remembers that story, let me know. Be good to see how it's held up in the last decade. Heh.

Edit: And another - it was a short one-shot, of Dumbledore carrying a portrait of Sirius up to a secret room in his office, where he keeps portraits of all the people that died in the wars he feels responsible for. He's talking to Sirius as he heads up the stairs, and Sirius doesn't know he's dead yet. Shed a goddamn tear when he figured it out and was reunited with portraits of Lily and James.

I'll take that one over the other, if anyone can recall the name.

This seems to be the only fic I ever mention on here, but a bunch of different scenes from Years of Rebellion come to mind—it's permanently, almost exhaustingly at an emotional peak. I love the way the room pops into view in this scene, after Harry's [literally] torn some Death Eaters limb from limb.

Honestly, a lot of fanfic authors have problems getting a reader to be emotionally invested. I can't think of a single story off the top of my head where I really felt something when some bad thing happened to so-and-so, and I have read all the fics mentioned in this thread (except the slash ones the OP loves, obviously). There's fics where I get invested in, but to the point of being devastated when Sirius dies or something... I don't think it's happened to me. I don't think there's any amount of world-building or character development that would make me shed a tear if Ron or Hermione dies in some random fanfic after 180,000 words. I don't think that story exists.

Rapes don't really do it for me, since everytime it's ever been used in a story as a plot device, it's always been a bit contrived, and not very necessary, so it doesn't evoke emotion since I'm not attached to the character. The recent GoT/HP fic is a prime example of it (no offense to the writer), but the only point of it was to further the plot along. It's hard to be invested in a story like that, though that's more a factor of GoT itself than anything else.

My Immortal was very emotional in my opinion. I was laughing every other sentence.

Forget fanfiction. Dumbledore dying and the subsequent reactions of the canon characters made be tear up.
