Blatantly ripping off r/anime, I thought it'd be nice to host a watch club where we nominate series, pick one by popular vote and then watch an episode a day for the duration and discuss it as we go by. This gets some interesting discussion going, is ideal with anime because of the 20 minute format so its manageable each day.

Anyway, lets start off by every person nominating one anime they want to watch, including a MAL link and a short description/summary in their own words . Obviously you can nominate something you haven't seen, then just use a generic summary from MAL.

I'm gonna preemptively ban any series over 26 episodes since that just gets grating to watch day after day and personally recommend we start off with a short 13 episoder, atleast to start us off.

Let's say nominations are open until July 31st, Noon GMT and then we'll vote for what we want until Saturday, start watching on Sunday.

---------- Post automerged at 12:30 AM ---------- Previous post was at 12:21 AM ----------

    I'll start us off.

    Toradora!

Toradora! is the story of Takase Ryuji, a boy who looks like a delinquent with narrowed eyes who in reality is ridiculously nice and has a cleaning fetish. He starts his high school life and meets Aisaka Taiga, known as the Palmtop Tiger, a violent and crass loli-looking girl. The story pretty much centers around them and their relationship along with their friends.

The story gets pretty involved and interesting, it's a pretty much straightforward romance/comedy/drama but it is executed near flawlessly in my opinion. All the characters are interesting, three dimensional and fun.

BONUS: Toradora actually has one of my favorite fight scenes in ALL of anime, if not the outright fave. It's very good and unexpected in a show of this kind.

I'd be down for this. It may even help get some shows off my backlog.

That being said, if it's going to be primarily people who already watch anime doing this, I'd start off with something else. I mean, who hasn't seen Toradora, really?

Though if there's a large amount of people more unfamiliar with the medium then it could be a pretty good option. Personally I'd say go for a thirteen episode series too. Toradora actually has twenty five, which would take nearly a month to watch.

Huh. Hope this one works out better than the one I tried to start...

ANYWAY, I nominate Dennou Coil. Set in the year 2026 as the internet begins to be overlaid on top of our physical world. Through use of internet-connected augmented reality eyeglasses and visors, it's possible for humans to view and interact with the virtual substrata.

The story follows Yuko Okonogi, who finds herself thrust into an "investigation agency" compromised of children wielding augmented-reality glasses, virtual tools, and digital-reality manipulating metatags. She and her friends seek to solve the mystery underlying the rumors that are plaguing the town of disappearances, as the lines between the virtual and the real blurr.

In a nutshell, Dennou Coil is what you get when you mix equal parts Ghost in the Shell with Miyazaki. It's a "cyberpunk" tale that follows children who get involved in some surprisingly heavy shit. Very well executed and well animated, and absolutely worth watching.

I'd be up for Dennou Coil. It's one of those anime that have been on my 'to watch list' for a very long time, but I've never gotten around to finishing it.

I agree that everyone has probably seen Toradora. We should choose something new.

We should pick an anime that is interesting to talk about, rather than just something simple and easy. Another possibility could be something like Mawaru Penguindrum (Only watched the first 7 episodes with friends and had no fucking clue what was going on).

Mawaru Penguindrum makes a lot less sense before it makes more. Even then, lots of speculation at the end.

I nominate this: Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei if there's enough people who haven't seen it. I never got around to watching it but I hear it was pretty popular when it came out. It's also by shaft, for what that's worth.

Well guys, thats the point of nominating a series and then voting. We as a collective decide what we want to watch, so even if someone nominates DBZ that obviously near everyone is watched, we'll vote on it, and if it wins watch it.

Rewatching a series isn't necessarily bad with quality discussion following each episode.

Fair enough. I'm actually not against rewatching a series either, Toradora just seemed like especially well tread territory.

Although now that I think about it, Best Girl arguments could be made amusing by virtue of DLP.

This sounds pretty interesting. I'll wait until a few more options are presented before voting, but this caught my interest.

As for voting, are you planning to add a poll after enough submissions have been put forward? Although it may not be needed unless interest picks up heavily.

I'll compile all the nominations in a post along with all summaries, then we'll vote (each person has one vote) and I'll tally that aswell. Might do a poll or just do it by hand, doesn't really matter either way.

Would be up for this as well,, but wasn't there a similar thread once? xD

Anyway, am one of those who hasn't watched Toradora yet, so, wouldn't mind if we watched that one.

My nomination would be Mahou Shoujo Madoka Magica, I never got around to watch it and maybe others are in the same situation as well.

Yeah, I think Banta started a similar thread, once.

I'd like to join in, but I just don't have the time to watch an episode per day. You seem to have a lot of spare time at your Israelian Wehrmacht, Azira.

Could go once or twice a week (or thrice, if we're feeling dangerous), gives everyone a chance to watch the episode and get some good discussion out of it.

Yeah I think that might be better. Once a day may be a tad ambitious, and I feel many would end up falling too far behind and then just give up.

Fair enough, lets do 3 episodes a week + discussion. I think doing less just drags it out, esp if we go with a 26 episode series.

Definitely down for this but agree that every day would be difficult. Once or twice a week sounds perfect.

I'm gonna suggest Gankutsuou. Heard nothing but good things about it and it's something I've been meaning to watch for a while now but never found the time. Heres a preview.

Gankutsuou is an anime loosely based on the novel The Count of Monte Cristo by Alexandre Dumas. It tells the story of Albert Morcerf, a young aristocrat who happens to befriend a wealthy nobleman, The Count of Monte Cristo, through a series of bizarre events.

I'd love to sign up for twice a week. Considering the fact that I also follow at least a couple of shows each season, more than that might become a chore.

I like the suggestion of Dennou Coil since I do have a copy, but starting with a 26-episode series might be a bit overambitious. Going for a similar/surrealist feel, I'd like to nominate Paranoia Agent instead.

Or we could start with a film or two, as a proof of concept that people would actually a. follow a schedule, and b. be interested in actual debate.

Eh, I'm going on the assumption that the people of this board are definitely interested and will participate, so I don't feel there's a need for a proof of concept, prefer to just dive in.

We can alternate between series -> film -> series -> film, but I want to arbitrarily start with a series.

Since everyone seems to be on board for twice a week and that also allows for catch up and discussion for people who miss a day/two, We'll def move it to twice a week.

    Tentative schedule:

July 31st - Nominations close, I will compile all the nominations into a post (BTW, I'd appreciate people adding a summary to their nominations if possible) and voting will start.
Aug 3rd - Voting ends, series with most votes is chosen, 24 downtime period to allow people to set themselves up (via streaming or otherwise).
Aug 4th - Discussion on Episode 1 starts.

I figure we can watch an episode on Sunday and Thursday.

Do nominations have to be on animes already completed? Because I just started a pretty good mystery anime that's pretty good called Dangan Ronpa: The Animation. It's an intense murder game where you can only get out of it by completing a murder, without getting caught. There's 4 episodes out right now, but I find something like this to be perfect for discussions. Still, if we were to go for an episode a day, that would be impossible obviously for an ongoing anime.

As my avatar might attest, I am a fan (the game is awesome) but unfortunately we'll only watch completed works.

I'm in. everything you guys are suggesting is totally different than the stuff I'd nominate (Macross, First Gundam, Space Battleship Yamato (original or 2199) but I've got a child-like love for the classic space anime.

That said a lot of suggestions look good.
