Just got finished reading a fic called The Wizard of Silence a Charmed/Harry Potter AU XOver at HPFandom.com (ok fic) and decided to check out the rest of the site. (twitch, twitch) These are the stats listed on their homepage: General (552) Harry Potter fan fiction that may include all genres/ pairings, but is not slash.
Slash (2256) Harry Potter fan fiction stories that contain either a male/male or female/female romantic pairing. Threesomes may be included.
Believe you/me I looked at a sampling WWAAYY more M/M than any of the others. (twitch, twitch)

What did you expect? If you look at FF.net and search for a good fic, you can dismiss nearly 90% because it's either Slash, the plot is crap or it's bad written. I agree that nearly 4 times as much Slash as non-slash is a bit much, but you shouldn't be too surprised.

I wonder how much of it is written by 13 year girls who just discovered sex and how much is written by other people.

Yes it is insane theres that much slash.

Fanfiction.net is a bunch of crap, crap, slash, and more crap and slash and like a handful of good stories.

I really do wonder how many of the slash fangirls would stay that way, if they took an average sized dildo, and had it shoved up their rectum over and over.

With utmost love and affection of course... heh. Let them see how uber kewl and romantic that is then.

LOL Mid. That could be a potential cure for all the slash around.

Just what is it about HP that induces people to write slash?? I mean there aren't any indications of slash oriantation in Canon so why do people write it? Don't think I'll ever understand.

I think it is one of two things..
    A. kids are being brought up to accept homosexuals and treat them as equals with equal rights (nothing seriously wrong with that). or
    B. These 13 year olds see the HP movies, fall in love with Tom Felton and Danielle Radcliffe and think that they would be great fuck buddies..

Err... With some of the Slash Fangirls at my old HS I think a few of them may have probably tried it (Idle Speculation)... They haven't stopped reading slash yet either.

I know exactly what you mean about HPFandom and all of the slash stories. I have found a few good ones, but I swear that most of them have to be written by barely pubescent girls. ROFLMAO

As much as slash squicks me for the most part, it doesn't baffle me the way it used to. We can toss around percentages for actual homosexuals, or people with bisexual or homosexual desires and they will never be anywhere near the sheer glut of slash fanfiction.

But it's not a reflection on society we should be comparing too. It's a reflection more on the sorts of folks who enjoy reading and writing fanfiction. We're dealing with what would traditionally be considered the 'outcasts' of normalcy, made with lots of uncertain teenage boys and, still in the majority, curious teenage girls. Writing slash allows LittleMissFeltonLover1991 to explore her sexuality in a very controlled and completely safe environment. Writing about boys kissing or doing the 'naughty' is their counterculture way of seeking acceptance from the counterculture.

The result of it is that there is a lot of slash out there. And most people either love the slash and embrace the slashiness because fic will never hurt them the way a torn asshole might. Or they can't stand it and the thought sickens them to a point of irrational anger and rage. Fearing that makes them bigots or closed-minded or worse, republicans, they all must qualify, that they "have no problem with gays. Just don't want to read about it."

It's just an odd by-product of the freakishness that is fanfiction. And for the record, I have no problem with gays. I just don't want to read about them. Unless the fic is really cool.

    A- "A yaoi fan girl"

Slash and yaoi lovers are a species that are seperate from the rest of hummanity by means of brain power.

Wow... nonjon makes some seriously fascinating points - and I think he's probibably right. I know a few girls who write slash for their favorite media (tv, books, video games), and most are not "typical" in any meaningful way. I recall one is bisexual with a committed girl as a life partner, and another who married a British guy she met online, but used to post extremely graphic information in her blog. Sure, great girls, and talented writers actually (the latter actually went on to found ficwad.com with her husband), but I think some of it stems from sexual issues in their own lives.

Btw, let me give them both a big shout out: Hey!

And then there are those of us who don't mind well written Slash but have written off the entire Genre because LittleMissFeltonLover1991 and her cohorts are usually abysmal writers.

I agree with a lot of your other points though -- I just prefer well written stuff and the majority of slash (Like HG and most HHr) is not.

    LMOA!!

I think I killed my spleem with laughter. Thanks Gio...

Given the world wide popularity of the HP series and nonjon's comments I suppose it's understandable that slash is so prevalent in fanfics these days. What I do find curious is that there is no increase of the femslash genra. Is this an indication that girls write more fanfiction than guys? I mean what teen male wouldn't want to read about Tonk/Fluer. So why the lack of femslash.

Personally I think it cause the femslash writers are too lazy to write fics or are not so gung ho as the majority of the Slash writers, who btw give the impression of a hamster after drinking 3 jugs of expresso with a mountain of sugar.

I agree that there is too much slash fanfiction, but if the fangirls didn't write slash they would still be writing crap. It's easy to spot (usually) and ignore the slash fanfics.

The problem with the HPfandom, is that the general section has a large number of "preslash" fics in it. The authors write it up to the stage of long glances, and non-sexual fantasies, between two guys, then stick it in the general section "because it doesn't involve slash".

Most stories have a warning of slash in the summary but some of them have no warning so when you're reading a story thats actually good all of a sudden you hit a brick wall of slash. Shouldn't be surprised with the number of slash fics, FF.net is probably half slash.

Only half? Most ratios I see are at least 4:1. Then there is the bad:good quality on ffnet, which as far as I can tell is 20:1. If not worse. The most irritating part af slash fiction, is that the characters are utterly mutilated in order to fit the "writer's" mold for the story.

There's an easy way to figure out the ratio. Take the total number of fics on DLP (610) and divide 261,289 (FFNet's count of HP fics) by that. It comes out to around 428 bad fics for every one good fic. This is a little off, considering that there ARE some good fics not documented on DLP. Let's assume that, for the sake of argument, there are 2,000 unrecorded good fics on FFNet. That's 2610 good fics total. Even still, that's under 1% of the total Harry Potter fics on FFNet.

EDIT: I'm only counting the fics in the libraries. Not in FF discussion or Works By Author or FOR REVIEW or the Trash Bin.

Wow. And I never considered ff.net to have much slash. Compared to some of the other sites I've visited, ff.net is pretty mild...
But there's no cure. Slash pops up everywhere, and especially if you're searching in one of the "original" categories. (I use the word "original" very loosely here).
For instance, if you want to read some Vampire!Harry, most of the time you'll find him happily sucking Draco or Snape's neck. And downwards, if you catch my drift.

I completely agree. <ranting > Take those Veela!Draco fics, per example. "Oh by the way, Harry, Draco Malfoy is a Veela and he will die if you don't bond with him. You're his mate." And they struggle a bit, but in the end they always get together, and Harry has the dubious pleasure of carrying Draco's children. No matter how physically impossible that may be. Most authors completely twist Harry and Draco's character, only so they will be "happy" together. Sure, Harry has a 'saving-people'-thing, but he's not insane, and honestly, it's Malfoy! </ranting >
Ah, that reminds me of my favourite Veela!Draco fic. When Harry was told he had to mate with Draco, he just said "No." and left. :D
