I am looking for stories where Harry and friends (not necessarily Ron/Hermione) leave the wizarding world and create their own country (i.e. an island), soon to be followed by other beasts and beings unhappy with the way wizarding Britain or even the wizarding world is run.

Harry either just wants to live a quiet life, or he is driven out of the UK, or something in between. Thus there might be some manipulative Dumbledore, as well as some Dumbledore / Ministry bashing. There are some similarities with the “Lord of Azkaban” theme, which I am always looking for as well.

There are two decent ones I can think of:
Space haven by esama. Can't find a decent link to it as the dropbox version is borked.

And there was a azkaban fic where instead of the usual angstfest Harry just said fuck it and made a portal to an alternate dimension, taking all the magical creatures with him. I can't find it at all. So perhaps someone else knows what I'm talking about, because now I also want to reread it.n

 

I've started that one a couple times, but I never make it past the part where the Dursley's get put into a Gringott's vault. At least it is memorable, it's the only fic I can recognize where I stop reading before the second page.

I think there was a Harry/Voldemort story where they start building a village on the moon. I thought it was by Athey, but I don't immediately recognize it in her list of stories.

 

You could try the over-the-top smutfest that is Vanir's Harry Potter and the Midnight Sun.

Whatever Happened to the Likely Lad?, perhaps?

 

Or else Harry Potter and the Freedom of Apathy, where Harry is super-powered and decides to escape the wizarding world and create his own private island if I'm remembering it correctly. It's probably barely readable now but I remember enjoying it at the time. I think it's nonjon's first ever story on ff.net.

 

This has Harry not only founding his own country, he's (MAJOR spoilers if you haven't read this story, read at your own risk):

It has everything you asked for. And the new country is indeed founded on an island.

And this one. Something to counter the serious tone of Emperor. :awesome

 

Emperor has its good and bad moments.

But how could you recommend this piece of crap, yuck.
