I've noticed that many fics I've liked have a common theme - a Harry that is arrogant, cynical, and/or smug.

Smug!Harry tends to be more intelligent, less of a sniveling idiot, and all around more fun to read than normal, super-emotional, crying-every-third-paragraph Harry.


For example:

• the Denarian trilogy
• Knowledge is Power
• Wastelands of Time (if I remember correctly)
• Santi's BWL (sorta).

Does anyone have any other decent fics with a Harry of a similar personality?

No slash if possible please, romance is fine as long as it isn't H/G, darker and more AU the better.

I like seeing this Harry get punched in the face, or just dealt with via a Stupefy. Preferably, I want to see a Harry that wasn't actually abused so severely, but was just a complete little asshole, and he never lived in the cub-board, it was just ten minutes time out, he wasn't half starved, just denied sweets, etc etc.

That is, half the tale of abuse is gross exaggerations of a little shithead who needed the smacking. But didn't get it.

 

So, you want Draco Potter.

There is Brutal Harry link and its sequel. They are not the best but are a very interesting take on this idea. Harry is very arrogant but it's due to him having some serious issues while not being a whiny bitch about it.

The difference between many arrogant/smug!Harry fics and Draco, is that Harry often earns the right to be smug through some level of talent or achievement, unlike Draco.

 

Bungle in the Jungle and in particular its sequel Turn Me Loose, both are quite enjoyable.

I tried Midnight Lord; felt a bit too cliche'd. Goblins and Peverell and meh. My e-reader says I didn't get past 5.6%.

Does it get better?
