Windows 8.1 automatically updated and when my computer restarted my c drive files were missing from both my desktop and the users file. The files are mostly word docs, pdfs and a few photos.

I have backups but they're outdated (I won't be making that mistake again) and was wondering if there's a way to recover the files so I don't have to redo a whole bunch of work.

    Cheers

The easiest way would be recovering from a system restore point. Windows should automatically create one before installing updates, so recovering from that one should work.

Hands down one of the better file recovery tools I've used. As long as you haven't gone crazy since the files have vanished and started downloading a lot of stuff, most of the files, if not all should still be intact.

Did you check if there's a windows.old folder in your C: drive?
