I haven't written Pure HP since 2006 so your point is moot.

Dude, you're coming in saying you can't read stories that were written (you can), you can't read stories that were never written (what?) and then that we produce nothing either.

So why the fuck are you even here? Because if I find no good reason for that, the default state is that you won't be here any longer.

You really should quit while you're ahead Luke. You've made a thread and made your point, good for you. Now stop before you piss off someone you shouldn't. Better yet, since you have the time to lament the drop in quality of the fics, why not write one of your own? Take us back to those lost glory days.

Bring back the balance so to say(yeah I couldn't help myself).

I get what the OP is saying.

There's something to be said for having 'been along for the ride.' I picked up HP after GoF came out, and that three year period between GoF and OotP was when I entered the fandom.

And things were wild. Theories all over the place. Lots of fun ideas for fanfiction that you don't see so much anymore now that we know the Deathly Hallows are where things went. And yeah, sure, a lot of that fanfiction was poorly written. But so what?

It was the unknown that supplied half the fun. And that's gone, and that energy is never quite going to come back. You aren't going to get an awesome brainstorming thread on what might happen now that we know.

Snape was a spy, but his storyline didn't quite live up to the potential people wanted. Dumbledore dies. Harry never becomes a badass combatist, and ends up being more or less a regular kid caught up in events who nevertheless does his best... and that ends up being enough. Harry ends up with Ginny and Ron ends up with Hermione. Viktor and Fleur didn't have major roles after GoF. Voldemort's abilities as a villain hellbent on domination fell a little flat. The Deathly Hallows are the 'big thing' in the end.

Knowing that going into the fandom takes a lot of the fun out of it that I remember. Granted I wasn't active on DLP at the time, I mostly hung out on places like SugarQuill, but still. JKR writing another book is not going to fix that for you.

I get it OP. I'm glad I didn't miss out, because I think you're right. There is such a thing as missing out on the ride, and sounds like you did. Even if it was bumpy, crowded, and full of smelly people the whole time, it was a ride.

I have already read most of the library. My point is unlike the good old days DLP and HP fandom is not producing the quality it used to and I miss the good old days because of that. If I was in that era at least I would surrounded by active quality fiction unlike now and I miss that. I'm going to make a list of authors of Library of DLP who don't write anymore.
Shezza, joe6991, Portus, nonjon, enembee, kmfrank, Voice of the Nephilim, Tinn Tam, Myst Shadow, BajaB, The Santi, Ruskbyte, Tinn Tam, Thalarian, Big D on a Diet, IP82, Amerision, Matt Silver 3k, nuhuh, jbern, Taliath, jon3776, Draco664 ,mira mirth, Silens Cursor, RustyRed,Caliburn, Zennith6, Dream Red, Fayr Warning and more.

And seriously Newt Scamnder will resurrect the fandom Scott. With no Harry in Harry Potter its a fail.

CheddarTrek Thank you so much. Thats exactly what I feel. I hope my point is cleared up to anyone who missed it.

Joe is an actual published author was some good books (and still posts here frequently)
Enembe is still active on this site
    MattSilver is still active
    Nuhuh is still alive
Jbern is busy being a published author

Didn't feel like going through all the names, but some of them like nonjon and kmfrank have popped up briefly in the last few years, wrote something that was disappointing and outdated, and disappeared again. Santi trolled the entire site with a single update in 3 years, and tinntamm is busy saving lives.

I will agree that more established authors are disappearing than new ones appearing, but that's sort of the nature of the beast. It's been 7 or 8 years since HP#7 came out.

@CheddarTrek We knew exactly what he meant, however he failed to articulate it and in the process, either intentionally or unintentionally insulted the authors on the board who have stuck around and continued to post stories for the community.

Jeez I never thought anyone would be guilty of romanticizing pre-2007 DLP.

Yeah fandoms have their creative peaks, and post OotP was probably one of them for Harry Potter. But even without you there those stories were written, they can still be read whenever you feel like it. Don't bother mooning over those days, most of the speculation and arguments were (really) stupid and the anticipation disappointed, you really didn't loose anything by not participating.

We still have threads about the Harry Potter world but instead 40 page shitstorms on whether Harry/Hermione are the OTP and Ginny is a slut its about how 3000 wizards can form a self-sustaining population or something. The fandom has matured, it hasn't gone away and you really haven't been looking very hard if you can't find any recently updated quality HP fics. Yeah some authors move on and others move in but the quality of stories and writing has only improved over the years. If your mourning the chance to rub elbows with good HP fanfic authors there are plenty still around.

You seem to be having some sort of mini-crisis that's centered itself around this topic. My advice is let it go, there is plenty here to still enjoy and frankly you won't get anything out of it at all if you insist on holding it up to a romanticized view of past posts and members.

Harry Potter was a world-wide phenomenon, even if she wrote a whole new series it may reinvigorate the fandom but it wouldn't bring about the fervor the original inspired. There were no golden days, not like you imagine, go write a story or start a thread and stop mooning.

I get you, and at the same time, I really don't.

I got into Final Fantasy XI around 2005-6. That's sorta early in its cycle, mind you, but the "old" guard really used to love letting you know what the NA/EU beta days were like. After a while, all of those stories about the seedy JP players in Valkurm and the badass GMs who intervened would grate on your nerves, because you just weren't there.

But you know what? People thought it was dying, and it didn't. New expansions were released. We had scandals and trials of our own. Lo and behold, we were still "tagging along for the ride", so to speak.

Here's a somewhat sadder anecdote. My favourite manga for years (in some ways, still is) was Ranma 1/2. It was completed in 1996.

    I was five.

But you know what? Even though the English-speaking fandom is comparatively tiny to the HP community, the spirit is there. If you're an aspiring writer, you will be inspired when you like the things you read.

So be glad that Harry Potter started as a series of novels, as opposed to an MMO which will die next year, or a shonen series which passed away long ago. The LOTR community is still thriving: why expect any different from us? :)

Luke, you said in almost every post in this thread that nothing today can compare to the old classics. It was kind of funny the first five times, but you're just whining.

Take a stroll through WBA, dumdum. Swim for example is still writing and updating one of those very classics you're talking about. I could link you to it, but if you're so lazy that you can't be bothered to go to WBA on your own, then maybe you shouldn't.

Personally, I understand how you're feeling, OP. I've joined DLP and the HP fandom very recently, and many times, I feel that I missed out on so much awesome stuff. I wish I could have joined much earlier, like in 2005.

But remember, DLP is still alive, and there are plenty of awesome people here right now! Even at this moment, DLP authors are writing excellent stories, many that will no doubt become classics in a few years. Years later, people will look back and wish they were a part of our time. So, I’d say that we should enjoy what we have right now instead of wishing for what we can’t have.

I'm not sure what to say.

Your biggest problem with your year of birth is that you missed the release of a few Harry Potter books? And that's a 'crucial issue'?

    I mean, really?

I won't claim that I truly know Taure, but I don't believe some kind of reverse-The Shining consumption of the ursine stuff of life to be among his vices.

    But those are canon!

But those are in cauldron cakes and pumpkin pasties!

I, for one, am grateful that I didn't get into the fandom proper when I first read the books. When I first started reading the books I was about 9-10 years old and lets be honest, if I'd gotten involved in the fandom I would no doubt have churned out some eye-watering shit. I would also have read some eye-watering shit.

Sure, even coming to the fandom later, that eye-water shit is still there, but at least now I can look upon it with the benefit of experience. I do not doubt that if, as a 12 year old, I'd been involved in the fandom, I would have become a Weasley-bashing, Manipulative-Dumbledore spewing moron.

As it is, coming later to the show, I can appreciate the books for what they really are, rather than what 12 year-old me thought they were.

    And that's a good thing.

Out of that Jbern Shezza The Santi Joe and couple others still write on a couple of month basis. They may have grown up and gotten lives but they still stick to their roots. It's also super insulting to the authors now a days. He isn't wrong on one point though it is very hard for new authors to get involved. Any new stories I ever read are the ones Taure recommends everyone once in a while because I can't flip the FF anymore really. It's awful.

Also there are still a ton of other new authors who are really good and well lets be honest here the whole Old Guard here, anything the wrote before like 2010ish is on a basis, almost unreadable. Yeah there are the old legends and shit but a lot of stories don't age well because well. THIS WEBSITE IS ALMOST TEN YEARS OLD. And going strong. So pull your mopey angsty head out of your ass and look around.
