Point taken. If in that world I was a muggle born I guess it could go both ways. Even if it is a magical world, I believe a teenager may feel like an obligation and only study the necessary. Or, well, you could be more Hermione-like

I'd do it. The potential return on the venture would be almost too tempting. Just got to survive Voldemort, that couldn't be too hard, right?

Yes, provided I get to keep my memories and personality (with physiological changes for puberty). I mean, it would suck to leave my family and friends behind, but the potential reward is massive.

Following on from Xandrel's to-do list, surviving CoS wouldn't be that hard.
Either of the following would probably work:
    A) Tell Dumbledore your scar hurts whenever you go near Ginny, and after a while you've realised that it isn't Ginny that's the cause, but instead some book she has. Should get the ball rolling, though you'd still have the chamber below, but that'd be a project for the future. And I'm sure Dumblefore would eventually whip up an anti-Horcrux thing, without the basilisk venom.
Or B) Stick with as many people around as possible until the first petrification, then report to Dumbledore that you have accidentally found a giant hole in the bathroom (cause admitting you've brewed polyjuice would be irrelevant in comparison) and that, when you looked at a sink and spoke, you accidentally spoke what Hermione realised was parseltongue (you can BS the password, how would Dumbledore know?). Voila, chamber discovered, and Dumbledore would find the shed skin and realise he's about to go up against a basilisk, I'm sure he'd have some way to deal with it.

Of course, you could try to do both of these at once.

    Other things to do:
    1. You'd probably be a lot more motivated to learn more spells, which would help in the long run almost no matter how simple the spell seems.
    2. Get Map off twins (outright steal it if you want, they've got it totally memorised only a year later). Possibly use it to 'find' the Room of Requirement. Use it to oust Pettigrew, then with Sirius freed you probably wouldn't have to go back to the Dursleys (and you could practise magic during the summer behind wards).
    3. Choose better electives for third year.
    4. Encourage Hermoine to do as many electives as possible (I'm sure you could think of a use for a time-turner).
    5. Try to get away with some basilisk venom, to destroy horcruxs with (starting with the diadem).

Of course, for all the suggestions I offer for how to survive in the short term, even flourish, there is the inevitable problem of Voldemort's resurrection and return. And no matter how hard you study, you won't be strong enough to match him when you do. And any attempts to mitigate Voldemort's power upon his return, by weakening his followers, won't really work as until he actually returns they are 'respected members of society'.

For all the short term help we can offer, I don't think its possible to beat Voldemort in the long run without putting yourself at unreasonable levels of risk (for someone without plot armour at least). And even if you don't get killed by Death Eaters, Dumbledore might decide to pick your brain then wipe it, to 'save your innocence' or something.

I suppose you could attempt to go to the muggles for help? But that opens up a whole new can of worms, starting with 'who do you contact in the first place'?

Very insightful. Of course, the best way to avoid the CoS bullshit is to prevent Ginny from getting her hands on the diary to begin with but that would leads to some more problems such as no longer being canon.

I think that would throw everything off far too much to be predictable. And if you 'caught on' early, the diary wouldn't pose a problem to anybody. Sticking at least close-ish to canon for as long as possible is the best bet.

Liquid Luck, teleportation and the ability to mold the world according to your imaginnation besides others. Whats not to like? Even if it means having to take on a quasi-immortal dark lord, it's too tempting to pass up.

Am I the only one whose first course of action is to immediately tell Dumbledore everything? You know, one of the most powerful wizards in the world and who you happen to have really deep secrets that can prove you're not joking?

Is this 'manipulative!Dumbledore can't have anyone ruining his plan to turn Harry into a weapon' Obliviated or 'grandfatherly!Dumbledore doesn't want you burdened with the knowledge, but will do all in his power to act on the information you give him' Obliviated?

Cos if it's number one then fuck you.

If it's number two then fine, whatever, knock yourself out Dumbledore. I'll just be here, thinking magic's fucking awesome and not worrying about the mass murderer coming for me. Thanks bro.

Peace, peace, friend! I'm not suggesting a manipulative Dumbledore in any way! Calm down.

Try to see the situation from Dumbledore's perspective. Some guy just totally took over Harry Potter's body. Accidental or not, this is a very serious issue.

Additionally, this guy also has knowledge that is far too dangerous to be left alone.

It's better to just obliviate him and make sure nobody else gets that info. After all, this is a world where people can read minds.

I always wonder why people think that Dumbledore would immediately obliviate someone. I admit its obviously a viable option in the wizarding world but by no means his only one. He probably can't obliviate you back down to 10 year old Harry without doing some damage, and some of that information is seriously useful. Plus in first year the wizarding world is at peace, Voldemort's been gone for 10 years. The stakes are not as high as they are later on, so drastic measures like stripping a childs mind without consent are less ethical/justified/needed. Especially if you can nip the problem in the bud using their information.

Personally I'd just go for the seer!Harry rout and drip feed him the pertinent information using 'visions.' Or say its coming through the curse scar link, Dumbledore would sure as hell swallow that one from an 11 year old Harry, just say you feel a 'link' to these strange objects/get Voldemort visions about Quirrel/ etc etc.

You could probably keep that up a fair while, so long as you hit the important stuff quickly you could get rid of the diadem, the diary, the resurrection stone, the locket and trap Voldemort himself before he realizes somethings going on (hell he hardly noticed at full power with loads of followers, let alone stuck under a turban in first year DADA.) The cup and Nagini (if she had been made into one yet) would be trickier but I'm sure someone like Dumbledore would be able to handle it, at the very least you could go dig up Tom Sr's grave and seriously fuck up Voldemort's resurrection plans.

Look at it from this perspective: Dumbledore needed a willing (and ignorant) sacrifice from Harry to ensure that Voldemort was finally dealt with. Someone entering Harry's body with full knowledge of what's actually going on is going to completely scupper that plan.

It's less 'I believe Dumbledore is secretly working purely for the greater good, and will Obliviate you for having future knowledge' and more 'I'm being offered the chance to have magic, at the expense of being Harry Potter himself. Therefore, why would I want to take the risk of being Obliviated at all?' Because any Obliviation to remove your future knowledge would also most likely involve removing your knowledge of your past life, which would defeat the whole reason you decided to go there and make 'you' no longer 'you', a notion I couldn't stomach allowing even the chance of occurring.

Because then you'd be Voldemort's number 1 target, without the benefit of your future knowledge and probably without the benefit of your plot armour, because Dumbledore would change things anyway. What use is being a teenage Harry Potter, without having any memories of your past life?

Put it another way - Obliviation on any level will almost certainly lead to 'your' death. Maybe not Harry Potter's, Dumbledore might manage to defeat Voldemort thanks to 'your' future knowledge. But you yourself will be long dead.

That said, a person who knows about the horcruxes and how Lily's protection works might be able to rules lawyer their way into replicating the end of Deathly Hallows.

Of course, if I were placed in that situation I'd be all too tempted to try and sneak attack Dumbledore so I could steal the Elder Wand.

Yeah, but who would want to take the risk of accepting an AK to the face to do that? There's probably no real safe way of removing the Scarcrux, so the best bet is probably containment of Voldemort's homunculus or something.

Cruciate him into insanity, Obliviate him into a drooling mess, let some Dementors have some fun with him, dose him with the Draught of Living Death, and then chuck him into the Veil. Deal with the Horcruces before or after doing so. Problem solved, no Scarcrux to be worried about.

Also, to metagame this, find a way of retaining the Philosopher's Stone in your First Year, for starters. It might be difficult given the nature of the Mirror's protection though.

I wouldn't do it. He starts off his first 11 years so depressingly. Child abuse, and then entering a whole different and crazy world....its a lot to handle

I think I'd have to pass on exchanging my family for the Dursleys. In addition, I have the kind of personality that wouldn't react well at all to having to deal with Harry's fame.

It depends on what I actually get out of it.

Would I give my the dull, study infested life I have up for the opportunity to learn magic and have the opportunity to research it? Hell fucking yes.

Would I have to deal with the Dark Lord and his shit? Probably. But I would have a working knowledge of the future.

    Wait.........shit.

I'm just gonna be live a fucking Peggy Sue aren't I?

But hey, MOTHER FUCKING MAGIC AND QUIDDITCH AND WANDS AND SHIT, MOTHERFUCKERS.
